View Full Version : Crash during ground missions

At first I thought it was a one off thing that happens every now and then as all games are never 100% perfect. However each night I play I am 100% garunteed for the system to crash at least once when I am on ground missions. I am running the game on high spec, medium shadows and all % options at 100% no xAA and X8AF. I have no issues at all in the space missions they run perfectly but as I've said on the ground is another story. My system specs are as follows:

Q6600 running at 2.4Ghz (standard)
2GB DDR3 1066mhz
3870X2 ATI card with most up to date graphics drivers
Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Or do you have any suggestions as to what it may be?

Same here.. some of the longer missions I just can't even get through because it will crash.

Guess I had a similar problem, after lowering my setting from high to medium I solved it

Same problem here, but only recently. This never happened in OB or head start. Using ATI here too, 5700 series. Catalyst 10.1 that I just updated to hoping it would fix my problem but made no difference.

I have the same problem on the Starbase 24 away mission, about halfway through at the exact same place it crashes to desktop. Highly frustrating. The game is not polished.

Just out of curiosity is everyone here using an ATI card?

@Thine71 I'll give that a try but the game runs smoothly with no stuttering or what looks like the system would be straining so I am not sure if that would solve the issue. I'll give it a go just in case though, thanks for the tip. It would be annoying though to have to switch graphics from high to medium each time I want to play ground missions.

I've got a highend system. I too, crash on almsot every single ground mission. At first I thoughtit was the graphics intensity, but then why would i be able to run UT3 or Crysis or Mass Effect, or any other graphics hoging game on max settings and it run fine, and this one not? ANyone figure out a fix or whatnot yet?

Intel i7-920
ATI HD4850

Ive had the same issue with the following specs..

955BE at 4ghz

8GB DDR3

3x crossfire with 2 4890s and one 5870

Win 7 64 bit

I found the temporary solution to be turning the lighting to low (which also switches the shadows to low) by doing this it never crashes..Then I turn it all back on after I get back to space.

I'll try that as a temp fix would be good to hear from an admin as to what they think would be causing it. As stated by someone else before I also can run Crysis on max settings with no problems (even though crysis is a badly coded game with tons of bugs). But I'd hate to keep swapping back and forth between settings we shouldnt have to be doing that in order to play the game. I realise I know that this is new and thats why mmos get patched I just hope its not left in the background or perhaps the admins are awaire of this and know of a fix that I can do other than altering the settings every 10-20 mins in order to have uninterupted gameplay.

Yeah, again its only the lighting that ive found at error, I tried just setting shadows to low and it continued to crash, must be bugged, I know must of us are setup up to run not only crysis but up to dx 11 as well, its just a graphics issue not our systems, I noticed it causes poor fps as well so it could be programing similiar to Crysis but worse... I think the Crysis lighting code is onna the worst parts of its programming too.

Another interesting point is however that yes...we all are running ATI graphics cards it seems...

Setting "Max lights per object" to any value lower than 5 in the advanced graphics settings has enabled me to do the ground part of Starbase 24 without crashing or any symptoms of graphics stuttering (which usually was the precursor to a crash).

This barely lowers the visual quality of the game so while it is clearly a temporary fix, I don't feel inclined to turn it back to 5 when in space and down to 4 while on land ... I just leave it at 4.

I've also experienced some really bad crashes. But not to desk top...my whole computer crashes hard.

I've experienced it several time son ground missions, especially one of the 'secure base' ones in Arcanis Arm Exploration quest. My sound will go crazy and screech, then my monitor goes out and the light on it changes to orange (indicating its no longer receiving a signal from puter). Only thing for me to do is to hold in power button and shut down whole thing. I also got this one on entering a new system.

As with others I'm using an ATI card ... Radeon 800 XT. I've updated to the latest drivers too....
though ATI's site says driver was released on 11/09 I think and is like version 9.1.1 maybe....and after I install them I check it under device manager and it lists version 8.593 from 09/09.

I've had a total system crash as well where I've had to power down completely, it is interesting how we are all using ATI cards downside to that is a bad dev for STO could turn around and say this is an ATI issue but I am sure that wouldnt happen. It is possible however ATI is known to release a bad driver every now and then but they are usually good at correcting it. Just have to see if a new patch from ATI fixes the issue or if the Devs here know of the problem.

A nice fix would be to seperate the ground and space graphics, possible but a lengthy process and would increase loading times between instances for sure.

Had the same problem on 4870 until I played a bit with Video Options. It seems that dynamic lighting is the main culprit here - judging by some testing I've done, that one's most reliable to solve the CTD.

Also, I saw a Dev Post around here saying to lower the World Detail to one half.

Ah, here's the thread: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=93084

I saw that yeah, its okay as a temp fix but when you have a system that can play it at max settings easily it is rather annoying to have to lower your settings because its buggy. Hopefully this is just teething problems with a new game :) as I imagine it would be. And seeing as people who it is effecting have of the same make of card it may be looked at quickly.

Absolutely. I can run most of the newer games on max settings - Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2, Dragonage... and all of those are graphically superior (well at least technically-wise - artistically, STO wins hands down). It's very annoying then to have to lower the gfx settings.
I guess new Catalyst 10.2's will help, coz a mate in the fleet says he installed RC2 version from mid-January, and on a 32bit system. Ill be waiting the official, x64 version and looking forward to try it out.

Yeah interesting also to know it is not a 64bit OS issue, I first noticed that many of us are using Vista or Windows 7 64bit. Maybe the new ATI drivers will help once they are out.

Anyone able to confirm this is no longer a problem after the last patch? I ran on full settings last night with no problems..

I was not aware it had been fixed, I'll run it again tonight and let you know what happens.

Negative... for me, I've had to turn the shadows to low (anything else looks terrible anyways, imo), the reflections to none, and the depth of field to off.

With those three on, the games crashes regularly during ground missions.

With those three off, the game hasn't crashed yet.

Running ATI HD 4890 x2 in a Crossfire, by the way. The only game I have issues with is this one.

Chalk me up to having the same issue

Dual 5870s running eyefinity mode
8 gigs ram DDR2 1066
Windows 7 64
Up to date ATI drivers with Crossfire app patch

trying the lighting setting temp fix to 4
