I have been playing STO for a few days now and have gotten up to level 4 but I have yet to make enough money to buy anything worth while :(
Am I missing something , or is money hard come buy till later missions ?

you'll make more as you go, but make sure to use the AH, whatever it's called here. It'll make a fair amount for you, but not a lot. Still though, you will be broke till around 6-10. Also do PvP if you like, and if not alteast do exporation missions. They reset every 30 min so I hear, but you just explore certain zones for planets. you can use the credits you get at Earth Starbase at the second floor of the docks to buy everything from consoles to shields to weapons. Don't think of energy creds as the end of the world, exploration is probably the best way to get fairly good gear.

As it was previously mentionned, exploration missions are your best friends for decent gear. Exchange will be there for the higher-end, expensive gear that you won't really need until the endgame.
As far as money is concerned, loot everything and sell whatever you can at the exchange. Everything else, sell at a starbase. if you sell at the ship's replicator, you get a 20% hit on your sale price.
And don't even bother selling to Ferengis - their hit is 25 to 40%, depending on the item. ;)
I'm Commander 3 and I have over 300K. Trust me, you don't NEED the credits for anything else than buying additional ships and maybe fleet bank tabs. So far, I think I bought maybe 5 items on the exchange and it was more because I didn't want to grind for them than the fact that I needed them.

energy credits are sooooo easy to get. Loot everything and then sell what you don't need in the replicator.

Is the game open to free explore ? Can one simply explore and hope to encounter reward type situations out side of a quest ?
As for " exploration missions " you would suggest replaying them multiple times?

Yesterday I had just under 8k credits. I played and won 3 ground PvP battles and I was sitting at 59k+. What is weird is I only got 2k credits from a space PvP win lol.

No. Even the losers win something in PvP.

As for " exploration missions " you would suggest replaying them multiple times?
There are exploration zones and you'll get a quest from someone with a name similar to Leutenant Grail. He looks like a wierd alien. His quest is to explore 3 planets. Anyways when you get the first quest, the zone you want to goto is the zone to the left closest to the Sol system.

Thanks for that bit of info !!
Also thanks to the other member that mentioned PVP as an idea for making money .
Do PVP matches effect game world maps / boarders ?

yes. One of the rewards are "Exploration tokens", which can be traded in for various pieces of starship gear at the shipyard in station 001 (Sol system). Most of the time, those pieces of gear will require more tokens than what one mission will give you, therefore requiring you to do many times over the explorations.
It's about as grindtastic as it gets ingame, which isn't half bad in the end.

No, not yet, though I am willing to bet they add territory battles in the future. PvP is a lot of fun though, both in space and on ground.

It would make things very interesting .
Being that this is the world of Star Trek I am sure we will see LOTS of things added into the game as time goes on .
One thing that I would like to see is the ability to ask and answer questions in a way that effects your characters in game personality and how NPC's may react to them .

I hope we do, I'm starting to lose hope on this game. I mean it's still fun, but it seems like it could be so much better.
