After playing around a bit during a ground mission with the options, I realized there was an auto fire option :)

So i went out of the options and tried to set my ground weapon on auto fire and it worked!

finally no more button mashing while on ground missions, thanks Cryptic!

Great now you don't even need to be present to play the game! You can play $10 (or however much it is) a month to get your guy to autofire at the enemy while you go to the toilet or make yourself a sandwich!

I just fail to see the point of auto-fire. You might as well just go the full mile and download an add-on that just plays the game for you while you go and do something else

Because constantly hitting one button over and over again wears on both your hand and your keyboard. Most people, normal people, don't like doing that. Fortunately for you, there's the option to not use it.

in pve it makes little differemce as my away team can eliminate all threats anyway , so i can go make a cup of coffee during combat with or without auto fire

Yeh, and pressing all those keys on your keyboard and mouse to walk around with your character, move your ship around and talk to other people get's so confusing and eventually tiring. I'll just use the auto-press feature so that it just presses the necessary buttons for me.

Really?

Oh, I hope so. Repetitive Strain Injury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repetitive_strain_injury) inducing actions != skill-filled gameplay.

It's already been pointed out but I'm going to add another post to the one mentioning RSI. If you suffer from it to any degree you don't want to be mashing keys over and over. I get pain in my hands sometimes just flying around in space using direction keys, I don't want to make this worse but if you're so concerned about it then you don't have to use it.

There is a fundamental difference between using multiple keys to control and steer your character/ship, use special abilities when needed, and simply mashing the same button mindlessly over and over. I can't imagine anyone playing an MMO would not grasp this simple concept.

I disagree with everyone who thinks this makes the game too easy or too stupid, with all those who say this makes it so you don't even have to play the game, may as well just download a bot to play it for you, etc. Removing a bit of worry about playing the user interface is a good thing, in my opinion, because it frees up some attention that you can rededicate to actually playing the game.

First of all, let's consider the "reality" of the situation which is that these weapons probably have a trigger (or a button, or whatever) that one could just hold down and produce a continuous stream of fire. I can immediately recall several episodes in which a character holds down a trigger while producing a continuous stream.

Secondly, making it so you don't have to continuously mash a key does not in any way lessen the attention you have to pay to playing. You still have to look at your targets and make sure you're trying to kill the tactically most important target. You still have to watch for the indication that you can use an exploit attack, if you have an exploit weapon or ability. You still have to watch for grenades being thrown or coming at you, if you like to try to dodge them. You still have to monitor your health. You still have to monitor the cooldowns on your special abilities.

The reality is that real combat is, in many ways, easier than combat in a game. True, game combat does not have the stress of knowing that you, the player, might actually really die. But what I'm talking about is situational awareness and control over your actions. In real combat, one has a much greater amount of situational awareness than a game allows. One can instantly visually scan one's surroundings and snap one's attention exactly and directly to any point. One is in a 3D world with all the benefits of depth perception that no amount of 3D processing for a 2D display screen can come close to think about dreaming to hint at replicating. There are audio cues coming in from all around. One can shout orders or information to squadmates, even while holding one's finger down on the trigger.

Is real combat easy? No. Is playing a game hard? No. But the advantage of real combat is the total immersion, which playing a game simply cannot provide. Removing a bit of worry about playing the user interface is a good thing, in my opinion, because it frees up some attention that you can rededicate to actually playing the game.

you DO know that autofire or not, you can walk off and the game will play itself? your away team kills better than you do for the most part anyways. ( due to the fact the computer can fire and activate powers much faster than we can, and its just AI vs AI with our BO's carrying maxxed gear and weps. well at least mine are maxxed)

Hoodmario? Hardly! He presents a valid point. This game is getting easier by the second. Pretty soon you'll just be spamming your F key at anything that moves.

you can always opt to NOT turn it on and those that want to can use it

Well I can't say this isn't a valid pint either.

Still, lets not call the nice guys around here ****s mmmkay!
