Well it looks like space combat has been 'balanced.'
100 space combat missions at elite. (At 7 groups each at 1.5 ships per group ~ 1000 ships)
Out of those 23 total drops.
18 batteries.
4 white systems
1 green.
And interestingly enough if my escort (maxed out systems) fights a battleship with:
Red matter capacitor
High Yield Torpedoes
Rapid Cannon Fire
Attack Pattern Alpha.
My escort cannot even crack the enemy ship's shields. Needless to say, he doesn't have that problem. Versus ship + 0.
How's tribble these days?

depends highly on your weapons out fit. I actually had a similar issue with battle ships but when I changed my weapons config that issue changed.

I have the highest normally available. Mark IV's all around. 2 heavy cannons plus photons forward. Beam in back...used to have a turret and then tried mines...but since frigates spam those power syphons like crazy i went with a beam weapon. 700 DPS forward. More when I pop the Red Matter Capacitor and the Attack pattern alpha. That amount of firepower would crack my escort like an eggshell. At best it drains one of the enemy's shields by 25%. And given the LONG cool down, the next time I can try that trick the enemy ship is long since fully healed.
What's your loadout? What strategy do you use?

Maybe you should try different energy settings? Or, simply, 100 power to Weapons. ;)
I otherwise don't have experience at lower levels with Elite. When the difficulty slider came, I had only Captains and Admirals...

In the lasts days I created a char to play all missions in Elite level (or at least, I'll try to do). Yesterday, just got the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and fight agains a battleship with the "miranda class" is..... uff. I must reconize that drops are more (not much more) and more "important" but useless beacouse the ship must be "fit" with all equipment at max level just begin (at least, another or may chars is making several "energy donations" to just begin. And the char, spend so many of her own energy in the "medical office".
The good part of it, is the amount of xp earned... but any battle counts.... I must reconize that is the second more hard "work" behind PVP (really in a second you haven't ship XD in pvp).
The first "try" of the bomary mission (at to this momment my character' ship was set with loot equipment) the undine battleship destroyed to all klingons and I must leave at max warp. In the second try, with all equipment to level 2, and healing to klingon warships more that my own ship, the undine destroyed a neg'vagh and nearly to the second XD. Really that is the most difficult mission to the date.
The "deaths" become from "minimal" loses of focus in the battle. On ground, a swordmaster can "RIP" to all away team... sometimes, the away team goes to home directly to "enfermery"... and I can ask, if starships no have a competent doctor to heal "broken ribs", commotions, burns.... and long list of things XD).
A salute for everybody.

Personally, I can handle anything in space on elite, unless a second or third ship gets pulled in (if I fly too close, they draw aggro on me) to help. Then it gets a little hairy. And cubes are tough any time, and really challenge on elite. (The key is to not get too close to him.)
As to drops, I get a much higher percentage of drops than what you've listed, as I'll end up with 1 - 4 blues after running my daily PvE missions. (Which is three missions, against up to 8 groups of 1 - 3 enemy ships.) In fact, last night I ran three daily missions with my fleet (two were ground missions) and walked away with 2 blues from just that one space mission alone.
The drop rate feels right to me.
As to difficulty level, I think it's perfect. Normal is easy, advanced is more difficult, elite is an actual challenge.

if your an escort what I use are dual phasers dual cannons duel heavy cannons qauntum torps back is torp duel phasers and a turret phaser.
i find beam target weapons 3 and beam target shields works quite well at taking down battle ships on elit and advanced. also my chars a tac officer.
