View Full Version : Will there be any Ship and Avatar Scale Models / Figureprints

Hello,
in WoW it is possible to get a real model of your avatar to put into ones display cabinet.
I would really like to have a scale model of my Gryphon-Class Fleet Escort. Best be it either a plastic model kit or some finished and painted scale modells like the Futura Star Trek Ship Replicas.
Are there similar plans for STO? Any chance cryptic?

Currently no, maybe in the future. For something like this to happen, CBS would have to give the ok because they own Star Trek and I'm sure they would want a share of the profits. Actually the profits would most likely be split between CBS, Atari, and Cryptic.
I like the idea though.

You should have used the forum search function. There is information on this topic and solutions offered.

I hate when people do this and I'll tell you why.
Not everyone is going to use the search option EVERY single time they want to make a post.
I guarantee this guy probably searched for it and was all excited when he found a post of the same content just so he could zing someone.
YOU WIN BUDDY!

*And* he didn't link to the supposed other thread. I guess he thought that it was exclusive.:

Heck with the way the devs have been closing and locking old necro topics. Searching and posting in old topics isn't a sure fire way to avoid peoples ire or infractions.
Seems a catch 22. You post new and get told to search. You search and post in an old topic you get called a necro and get the topic locked.
All that aside having a ship model on my desk would be somthing worth paying for.

Well, I would also say try and kitbash together one from existing models, the only problem with that idea is that only a few of the 'parts' exist in current model kits :(

I wouldn't mind this option because apparently they nixed the Polar Lights Akira model that was supposed to already be out by now.

There was a huge thread about this. They talked about considering it but that it just wasn't in the cards. It's too expensive and stuff.

I'd definitely like to buy a model of my Intrepid/Discovery, if they ever make one. Models of the species would be cool, too, but I'd probably go more for the ship.
I'd really want it to be a STO version for sure, but I guess we'll have to look to the figurine/model companies for it. I'm not sure what kind of conglomerate beast of CBS/Atari/(Toy Company) it would entail, but I'd love to see it happen in the future.

Lol, that would be awesome. I just finished watching James May's Toy Stories program a couple hours ago, and he built a Lego house (which was pretty effin' awesome, lol). Strange that you mention them; eerie, man, eerie! :)

With ther 90 $ + prizes I definitly say no. I would never buy such an overprise ship if I could get cheaper kitbash pieces from ebay and put together my own ship.

I'm too lazy to go looking, but a dev posted in one of the previous threads that discussed this. There's technical reasons why it's difficult to do personalized models and figurines like WoW has.
To make something with a '3D printer' machine, it needs to be a single piece. One single 3D mesh. MMO characters aren't one single piece - there's the body, then there's the different hair options, there's the bits of armour and gear, so on. Those are all separate parts.
So...to create those WoW figures, the manufacturers first need to convert this collection of 3D pieces into a single one-piece model. This is possible for WoW characters, because they have pretty few pieces in the first place.
But STO characters are way more complex. Even our characters' eyeballs and mouths are individual 3D meshes. It's impractical to convert STO characters into a one-piece model. Even ships are hard to do, because our ships are like Lego pieces - they're like that so they can be customized.
Of course, there's nothing stopping Cryptic, Atari and CBS from making standard models - they could make a Nomad-class cruiser model, or a Dervish-class escort. Could they do that? Sure. But it'd be expensive to do. And that's the other problem. Cost.

I was suggesting Lego purely for figures;
1. Most races are humanoid and, ergo, require few specialised parts for making them unique; hair/head being the most commonly altered feature.
2. Kits could be specially moulded parts ala bags/sashes and have a loop which fits over the head pole on the main body.
3. Option to have them as a keyring.
As for ships, I'd love a Airfix-style range of kits.

*ponders* Creating a unified polygon mesh is easy - just make a rectangular prism, subtract all the geometry elements from that, and then subtract that from another prism. It's the UV mapping and preservation of original texturing that would be the problem. It's be easiest if there was some extension out there for Maya or Zbrush or one of the others to be able to build a texture for one object by grabbing the texture data where it overlaps with other geometry, but I'm not aware of anyone coming up with that yet.
Edit:dammit, that would only really work for ships, because most of the clothing geometry isn't closed solids.

My suggestion is more towards ship model kits rather than the figure prints used for WoW.
I don't think that figureprints are really intended to be played with, they are more like sculptures. Thats fine for the avatar, but for a ship i would like the option to do the imaginary "flight" through thte living room.

I think a well individualised kit or figure is worth 100- 150 bugs. Just imagine how many hours you have to put into your kitbashed modell. Actually if you are not able to kitbash yourself and order a scratch build you will very likely top out far beyond 150$.
