I'm really curious what the machines look like that this MMO runs on.

Not unless you can find very small hamsters. I believe the 1U units are powered by Industrious Ants™ and they're quite efficient.

The disk carriers will be 3U or 4U units. 1U is a CPU carrier form factor. This is a CPU-heavy, disk-light environment, so that's what they'll have most of.

It's mostly just about what will fit in a box.

I hope because of your heavy instancing tech you guys will introduce different versions of current "maps".
So based on your characters storyline advancement you enter the Sol system map pre or post Klingon invasion. :D
Which should look VERY different once the Klings have paid a visit to the Sol system.

Nope, it's definitely a Mini ITX board of VIA's EPIA SP-series (http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/embedded/ProductDetail.jsp?id=261) variety. Took some research, but I found it. ;)

It looks like the VIA EPIA SP 8000E LVDS (http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=61) to be exact with the optional CF and PCMCIA card daughter board attached as shown in this VoomPC example (http://www.mobilemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/image_46759_superimage.jpg).

Quite old, though, with a 32MB CF stuck into it. I have an old retro-PC running DOS with a 2GB CF (http://2geek.org/pt/blog/default.aspx?id=151&quick=retroxps) that's bigger. :D

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

What can I say? I love hardware. I research, I build, I mod, and I tweak. :D

How Mandy ServerMachines are in this Cluster?

Believe it or not, they're most likely running one powerful Database server with 100GB+ of RAM for each logical server (ie: Holodeck, Tribble). Though Tribble might be much less in the spec department since it's just a test server. Unless Cryptic has changed recently (I doubt it), they're using an Object Oriented database which doesn't "cluster" well into multiple servers. Keep in mind this is the database server, which is most likely separate from the game server(s) themselves.

Presentation done by Cryptic employee about OOD:
http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/Dan/Shannon-Posniewski-SQL-Considered-Harmful-for-MMOs/

February 2010 thread about it:
http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=117912

EDIT:

What for a Basic Operating System run on this Notes?

Considering the fact that they use a hogg/pigg compression system, let alone regular C (not C++) for the client, I'd take a guess that they're running some form of UNIX for the servers, from BSD to Linux.

Plenty of other developers still use relational databases for their MMOs. They are always going to be benefits and drawbacks to each. And those using relational databases also have accomplishment systems like STO's accolades. For example, Turbine calls it "deeds".

There's really nothing wrong with either design for most MMO functionality provided they're implemented correctly to lighten the performance hit of their unique limitations. I'm sure Cryptic spent a great deal of effort in making their OOD perform well for STO.

We already have that technology, though it's called "holographic storage" or "3D storage". A company attempting this went out of business this year (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/storage/holographic-storage-bites-the-dust/799) trying to turn the technology into products. But the technology is real with medium as insanely difficult to develop such as crystals to the more feasible medium of thicker optical discs.

And we already have organic LED (OLED) displays, so we are incorporating material in technology that is synonymous with living tissue, whether it be plant or animal. Though the technical aspects of OLED film is less impressive than the term "organic". :)

We're living in a Star Trek world in this day and area minus the Federation and space travel. And I honestly think forming a "Federation" even among our own planet's nations is more of a challenge than developing the technology to get us into Trek's sci-fi. ;)
