Next time you do something like this make sure that your customers outside the US can participate in it.
This action very very customer unfriendly. Especialy to those who do not live in the US.

It's standard practice.
You know how long it took for them to add any other time zone to their messages other than PDT?
A really long time.
But anyways... The news should have a message about it only being for people in the US.
I always default directly to the rules before even bothering to check what it was all about... Then closed the tab. :)

You could also write to your Parliament/Congress/equivalent body and get them to change your country's laws about contests and the like. Because it's the plethora of crazy laws about contests that generally prevent companies from holding them outside the U.S., rather than the company's desire to screw people over.

How many contests has STO had so far? two? One exclusively for the US. and one for everyone held in UK. still not seeing the discrimination pattern here. Personally I know its impossible to please all the people all the time so why even bother? As someone mentioned above im sure shipping has alot to do with the contest rules. How much does it cost to ship a 329 lb chair that already costs over $2000? I think the price is higher than any amount that could be lost by loosing a whiney foreign customer as a subscriber over it. Besides that's one less complainer next time (if) they hold another us only contest. Not only that but when there is a contest for everyone that's one less person to compete with. Don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you on your way out.

So a company like Intel that has distribution points all over the world and makes millions of dollars in profit, and Atari with Offices in other countries with subscribers outside of the US or even inside the US that would of liked to participated should be excluded because of costs. How much would all of these prizes cost? Less that $1000US I'm taking a guess at...
If you have a company like Intel that is to cheap to take one of their stock items from an import into a country (which is then covered by all import taxes and charges etc) which is sent to the closest Atari office by Courier, to then be sent to the Winner by Courier or sent to the Winner direct in enough packaging to cover transport, then we have some big problems with logistics in either Intel's or Atari's Marketing departments.
People sent plenty of items around the world everyday without getting hit with a import tax - in most countries you can send items without a tax if the product is under a specific value and it is declared on the package.
Everyone needs to start looking at the world for what it is - one big community. The world does not revolve around the US, no matter what anyone else thinks.

It's amazing how many people do not know this.
If a contest doesn't extend to your country ... blame your own country!
The legal requirements to ensure a competition is run according to the laws of multiple countries is difficult bordering on ridiculous. Canada for example will not allow contests that primarily involve luck, such as this one which is just pulling a name out of a hat. Contests have to have a level of skill involved in order for prizes to be given.

Great!
Next time you do something like this make sure that your customers outside the US can participate in it.
This action very very customer unfriendly. Especialy to those who do not live in the US.
Is that penalization for not being a US citizen gonna stop any time soon?
This is almost always a problem with the laws outside of the U.S. Cryptic isn't penalizing you for living where you do... your own government is.

Okay, I understand everyone's gripe...I really do....
But I think I may win this one...
...I live in Rhode Island (the first state in the union to declare war on the British, the birth of the Industrial Revolution in America, the first state to abolish slavery... you get where I'm going with this) and I can not enter. What???
Any response would be greatly appreciated devs!
Yeah, this is amusing to me. I think the various people around the world ought to stop griping and think about this one for a moment (or write their parliament/congress/whatever). Hawai'i and Alaska can't play either.

Oh have thought about it.

Sorry but how stupid can you be as a company with world wide customers.
USA only might be cool for all my American friends but as a Euro i feel like a secondhand citizen of the world again.
Lucky the game gets better and better but some people never learn don't give me that law BS , in the hardest scenario it would be a split USA part / Euro part , this realy gives the impression that we are only good enough to pay to keep the game online and for the rest we are pesky aliens that can go to hell:mad:
I will not be like those that make an anti USA stand i love the USA but i wish the USA would give us Euro's a little bit love back , never forget where most off ya have the pre 250+ year roots ;)

That's pretty cool. Hope it generates some interest in the game.
And I see you guys found a use for that Star Warsy music that we rejected during closed beta! :p
You guys complained about this music? This beats the hell out of harpsichord+operaman that we have now.

International laws are an absolute nightmare for these contests. Each country has it's own laws on what can be done in a promotion, some are pretty damned draconian and Cryptic has chosen not to spend several million on lawyers figuring out how to run this contest internationally. Personally, I would rather the money went to in-game content than sorting out international advertising laws.

what is this crap. build a ship. ohhh uhmmm what ship can i build. really. this is only to build lt commander ships. ONLY LT COMMADER SHIPS. not much of a choice in the game but i guess. STop making this sound great only to have them be nothing but a game for a 10 year old kid to play for about 2 minutes and then go away from.

If you cant run a competition that includes everyone then should not run it at all, anything else will simple cause a divide in the "community"
Next time you want to do something similar Cryptic think of a way that everyone can benefit from, maybe something in game, c-store points, title, cosmetic fluff that sort of thing,

As a Klingon player I have to say only one thing. I AM NOT INTERESTED. There are no Klingon ships available for this contest.
Is this a coincidence, or related to the fact that Klingons do not get new ships with the Season 2 update, except the garbage carrier of course?

Not as stupid as it's customer base apparently.
When you find any global corporation (even on a scale of Sony, Microsoft, IBM, Shell, Toyota etc.) that runs competitions and sweepstakes internationally, then you might have a point.

I think it's more to get publicity and new players in to the game, which is why it is geared towards people who know Star Trek as the story of Starfleet.

Why would they do a blatant ripoff the the Galaxy Quest music for this? I was expecting to hear some one-liners in there like:
Never give up. Never surrender.
By Grabthar's Hammer... what a savings.
Because that WAS the theme-music for STO in EARLY closed beta. Everyone in beta pretty uch voiced their displeasure, so it was redone into what we have in game today.

So I read most of the posts here & did not find my answer.
From reading the rules I gather that we can enter our e-mails in this contest once per 24 hours?
Is that legitimate, will it get me disqualified, can it improve our chances of winning or does it make no difference at all?

Cryptic should compensate those not living in the US with C-store points instead of screwing us europeans over again.
How would this be fair to the vast majority of Americans who enter and win NOTHING? It wouldn't be.
The fact is, this competition being USA only is probably for legal reasons, which would mean that if they tried to make it a global drawing, the lawyers fees would be so damned high, that they wouldn't be able to hold a drawing at all.
Also, life isn't fair, deal with it.

Can't really blame the Europeans for being so upset about this.

Was this contest forgotten? It did last a long time. Or did I miss the announcing of the winners? Why wouldn't such news be on the front page? Why is the Architect even still there? That architect was nice & had cool music but the interactivity rating is really low in my book, there were barely any options so only about the first 20-30 ships would have been unique, the next 10,000+ would have all been done before. I hope that winning didn't depend on the design you made because that would be a flawed system, you'd have to choose like 500 winners because if you choose one then 499 other people would be like "WTH I DESIGNED THE EXACT SAME SHIP! URRGGG"
lol anyways an update on what is going on with this contest would be nice, or if I missed it could someone please direct me to it? Even the listing for it on the Atari website seems to have expired...

The architect itself was meaningless, just a way to draw people who hadn't played into STO. You weren't entered just by designing a ship - you were entered by clicking the "enter sweepstakes" tab and typing in your name and email once a day.
The winners have 15 days to verify their identity, and since the contest ended the 14th, and winners were chosen up to 3 days after that, there's still time for winners to verify (or not verify).
I do wish they would shut the site down though, I thought it ended the 31st and I've been entering every day for two weeks more than I had to.

Yea, I entered. I also left a post way back when to ask if it was ok to enter more than once, then I could have entered once a day! I got no replies, I imagine because no one wanted competition! :p
As for where the winners are supposed to verify, I imagine they sent them e-mails? If that is the case than I did not win & am no longer interested XP
Whoever got that legendary chair replica, /salute!
