How do I earn emblems and where can I spend them? I heard you can get mk XI gear for them?

Earn them, I'm not sure. Spend them, at Earth Space Dock. Speak to Lieutenant Carei at the center of the map. You can use this Earth Space Dock interactive map (http://stofan.comxa.com/databank/esd.php) to find him.

It is infinitely stupid that we should have to go to our home system to spend these emblems. I don't want to spend 20 minutes going to/from quest areas just to purchase an item.

There are way too many time sinks in this d*&n game as it is.

Just save up and go when you're ready. Using transwarp for instant travel.

I have found using the 'change instant' feature helpful in traveling. If I am in the far distant corner of the home galaxy and I want to go to Sol I can change instants and be at the Sol solar syatem. Hope this helps.
