View Full Version : So, what do we get this time?

Last bugfest we got the "Shaka" emote, what is in the cards to apologize for this current bugfest? I am personally quite sick of the .hogg file errors and crashing to desktop. This is not a problem in my filesystem, this is a problem with Season 2 and needs to be addressed soonest.

Please, for the love of Roddenberry, do your jobs and fix the bugs, no excuses anymore, you have used up all of your second chances at this point.

I know that bugs are inevitable, I know there will be problems with that many lines of code but how did a hogg file get buggered up and how long will it take to fix the damned thing?

What do we get? We get people saying how awesome Cryptic is, how we need to be patient and give them more money to fix what we already paid for.

I am not going to say Cryptic is doing a good job, I am not going to say Cryptic is doing a bad job, Why? cause I don't know the gravity of the situation, and neither do you, asking for something for your trouble is also perfectly acceptable, just don't make the issue about their performance level, it helps no one and only serves to generate conflict.

I had previously backed Cryptic's developers up on the issues because they were addressed and fixed fairly quickly. I am forced to take a different view considering the serious shortfalls of Season 2 and the latest patch that introduced shiny new bugs that they were fully aware of.

This is not a sign of competence or accountability when they write poor code, unapologetically introduce new known bugs and somehow manage to screw up a .hogg file header. What's next is what I ask, accidentally typing "rm -r /" or perhaps piping all output to /dev/null without apology or assignment of responsibility?

I am sorry, but "oops" just doesn't cut it anymore!

I am not actually requesting or demanding any recompense beyond fixing the ******ned problems they introduce every time someone fatfingers a keyboard and is too lazy to hit the backspace key.

I too was very patient at first, defending them because they inherited this title from a bankrupt developer and had a firm release date to contend with. But as I see more and more bugs, play the same cookie-cutter missions and get "pixel crack" dangled in front of my face in the C-Store, it starts to look more and more like this game is a short-term scam instead of a long-term MMO that intends to grow a fan base and beat odds. I root for the underdog, but not if the underdog is crap. If this game felt more finished and polished, and the content was dynamic and exciting, you bet I'd try and convert all my friends. But instead the few friends I had converted have stopped playing out of boredom or frustration.

I'm not waving your banner anymore, Cryptic. You've got a lot more to prove now that the horse is out of the barn and limping up the road.

Well to be perfectly honest with you, I have never seen a mmo engine as advanced as this one, that coupled with a population I am sure Cryptic is not used to having is a very tough thing, what I see in the core design is that hardware ultimately limits the engine itself and yes being a relatively bug filled game comes from imho very complex long strings of code, longer then anything a person at Blizzard, NCSoft, or Lucas Arts needs to look at. Even the real shiny effect when light passes over a ship or a persons uniform is a huge leap, most games are simulated to do that. I think the bugs in this game will absolutely be brutal at first, but the potential is very great. From what I have seen, the engine is built to last, Yes, we have been going through the same buildings and same sector space areas over and over to the point where we ignore the graphics, but you cannot forget, 2 huge factors stand in the way of instant progress, Lack of 11-12 Million subscribers that Blizzard enjoys and the lack of simple to implement code that Blizzard also enjoys, Cryptics job is about 50 times harder in my opinion.

None of which addresses the complaints. I am not the only one ticked off about this and I had always previously backed Cryptic in the matter because I used to code assembly. I am also fully cognizant of the fact that the lines of code are massive. Since the engine is existent, modifications need to be fully tested and known bugs that affect game-play, should NEVER make it through to release. Once again, Cryptic rushed to make a timetable and it backfired on them.

Season 2 was make-or-break for them for a large number of the player base and the game is once again emptying out. I have seen the return of a few of my fleet members after season 2 that have since, once again, quit playing out of frustration and boredom.

As far as the engine being so "advanced", in some ways it is because it was ostensibly written to include the ability to include new content rapidly and simplify development. They have neither included masses of new content as promised, nor have they shown that development is simplified, they have only managed to keep a status quo with a trickle of new content, lots of bugs that they promise to address, and old bugs that are still extant on the server and in the game client.

I know that one day, I would love to be able to utilize my "priority login" status but since the game is, at this point, bugged and boring, I don't see that happening for the foreseeable future.

These are not unreasonable demands, I know I don't demand that they teach our children how to read. I simply demand the product I purchased and access to the game I purchased, not excuses and delays.

I can agree with you alot of current stuff is defiantly iffy, but the problem is, Cryptic likes money, all companies like money, in order to retain customers, they need to make the game "full and fun", but to use both arguments, it almost sounds like your blaming them for being lazy, and thats why they don't keep their subscriber base up, and this simply isn't true, I would bet they are working their butts off to create a world for us fans that span decades of loyalty to the Startrek name, in business, your best customer isn't the new one, or the one that just bought alot of stuff, its the one that comes around often and knows you personally. I am pretty certain Cryptic knows the fans will do almost anything to live in a true to Startrek world, Check out Creations Convention Fee's a reference.

The engine was designed so they could implement content quickly, not because of laziness. However, a hogg file header extending beyond end of file seems to me to mean something was removed from the hogg file and the header was not modified. This is either laziness or someone screwed up. I would assume that this occurred during the last update on the 19'th and it has been reported many times since seemingly without any action being taken on it.

That would fit the definition of laziness, but it is also possible that it is more involved than that which still does not excuse the lack of response from Cryptic.

Yes, the engine was designed that way, but I bet you it isn't operating that way. I could not speak to you on this matter, I have not had this issue thus far concerning the hogg file. I hope your issue does get fixed in a timely manner.

what will we get? a bumper sticker with your choice of 3 phrases:

"if you can read this you are too close to my nacelles"
"i would rather push my galaxy than drive an olympic"
"what the hell is this thing hanging under my DSSV?"
