i was wondering if anyone at CS had thought of maybe this, offering real-life ship replicas of in-game player ships in the C-store?

******** has a similar thing going on, where you can purchase statuettes based on your game avatar
http://www.figureprints.com/

i would totally throw down on a mini-VoQuv model kit! the replicas wouldn't have to be huge or anything, even a 5-7in model can still have a lot of detail on it, depending on the company and the molds. there's already a couple of companies that make quality Trek ships replicas and model kits.

i think ships have been rather successful in the C-store (i see an awful lotta Galaxy X's anyways) and i think ship replicas would be a great way for lifers and subbers to help support the game, i'd buy one for sure.

what do you say, Cryptic, can we look at hooking this up or what?

I support the game enough with my sub fee and the stuff in the c-store that actually has anything to do with the game, thanks. I wouldn´t mind those things, but they are not needed in the least. Also, there must be ship replicas available elsewhere.

I mean no offense in saying this, i just don´t see the point, so sorry. :)

This has been suggested before. A dev even replied to one such thread. I'm frankly too lazy to digging for the exact post, but the extremely short summary is this:-

World of ******** character models are very basic. STO character and ship models are very complex. STO models have more details. And STO models are composed of many separate pieces for mix-and-match customisation.

WoW figureprints are made with rapid prototyping technology. You plug the 3D data into the machine, it spits out the figure. Due to the more complex nature of STO models...it's harder and apparently not practical to do with STO models.

That's what they said, anyway. If you disagree, fine. But that's the answer Cryptic gave.

I suppose it's possible to have standard starship model kits that don't use rapid prototyping technology. Just normal plastic or resin models that are manually assembled. To my knowledge Cryptic hasn't commented on that.

But even then...if you look at how a lot of our mix-and-match customised starships fit together, they don't really fit together that well. 3D pieces clip through each other. It's not an issue in a computer game, but if you had, say, a box of T5 Assault Cruiser parts in real life and tried to glue them together to match the custom look a player made in-game, you'd run into problems pretty quick.

there's a store not fra from me that has what appears to be those small collectables. they appear, however, to be out of proportion to their shape/size, and the nacelles on some seem to be bent. you're better of getting a 1:1000 scale model from polar lights. I have a D7 hanging by thread over my rig right now :D

I would rather have mine from Art Asylum / Diamond Select (http://diamondselecttoys.com/store.asp?p=subcategory.asp%3FCategoryID%3D335%26S ubcategoryID%3D269)

whoever would make them...

They could make STO pack's where you dont just buy one Ship, but the whole Variant Set's.

So you would get 3 Saucers, 3 Necelles, 3 Hulls, 3 Pylons... and all is interchangable... like Transfromers or Power Rangers Toys or something..

Just what to do about the diffrent Textures, Windows and Escape Pods?
Naaah wouldn't work good enough this way i guess.

Ever known someone big into Warhammer minis?

I think we have the answer.

I'd be interested to know what the merchandiser folks at CBS/Paramount would have to say about something like this.

Uhm... frankly that's bull crap. If this FigurePrints is the same thing that was offered a year back, the replicas not only have the detail of the character models, but every item your characters is wearing. The use any items you want, of the thousands in the game.

STO ship models have nowhere near that level of complexity. There are a few interchangeable parts that have a few options--nowhere near the same level of variety or detail--and paint jobs.

Still, I don't expect Cryptic to support this, though perhaps they could work with whoever is handling Star Trek models now to get some model kits out for at least the core class variants STO offers.

It would be interesting for one of the model making companies to make some snap together models of the "tier" ships that have the 3 costumes.

That way if you have a custom build you wanna re-create you could buy the models needed and mix and match parts.

Never happen in a million years though, plasti-molds are too expensive for such a limited niche market
