What to do with Offerings?

Hi, I've been playing STO for about a month now and I've figured out (or found out) what to do with most of the stuff in the game. Unfortunately I still have no clue what the Offering are for. I am referring of course to the Offerings you get when you aid a planet, like the Offerings of Appreciation, Esteem, Gratitude and Friendship. I know they are labeled as inventory items and consumed on use, but what does that mean and what do I do with them? I have a bunch of them sitting in my bank taking up space and I'd sure appreciate some help. I've looked through the forum and haven't found any other threads on this so far so could someone help me out? Thanks. :D

Use them, they look like boxes for a reason. They're not empty ;)

Use them to get a random item of uncommon to very rare quality.

Definitely thanks a bunch. I played around with them for a bit until I figured out I needed to right click them and then select 'use' from the menu. I got a bunch of great items and a lot more free bank space now.

I'm still looking for my stick. Zinc promised they could have sticks and I've not found one yet.

You can do that as well. You can even trade them with other players.

I had a very rare MK XI deflector once, and a rare MK V disruptor induction coil cunsole. Other than that, everything was uncommon and meowstly useless.

I don't think I've ever gotten an empty one. I heard there was a bug where if you try to open it immediately after you get it (i.e. you are still in orbit of the Aid the Planet) then it will be empty. So I always wait until I get back to a Starbase before opening it, so that I can put the item in my bank or sell it on the exchange.

like always i forget bout my inventory until its full so i actually went a while before i opened mines up...to my surprise i had some rare and uncommon MK XI ship equipment in a couple of items :D
