View Full Version : Give us multi-language Dialogue features ASAP!

OK, I agreed I would NOT get angry about it... Now I am...

My last mission took a lot of time to create. It would not take a lot of time to write a translation of the dialogues in English, but I am VERY (put in another nasty word of your choice here) TIRED to spend hours and hours to make a near-cinematic mission that does get down-rated because some ... beings only comprehend ONE language and get kind of ... superior feelings out of that (rather uneducacted) fact!

This is NOT an US Server, sorry... This is a GLOBAL server. Just like in EVE, just like in many other Games!
The client is multi-language! The Foundry offers you a language selection in the "project" mask.

I do NOT have a problem at all translating my missions into English (half of heritage=English). I DO have a problem with missions being down-graded because Cryptic - apparently - cannot afford German, Spanish, French speaking moderators anymore and thus does not help with tickets, if a mission gets down-graded for non- English language reasons. (Tickets written in English, btw) I do not even want localized servers. It would get terribly lonely for all of us!

I wondered though, would I get banned if I switched my client to the semi-professional German version and then down-graded ALL of the English missions: "Couldn't complete - no German" or rather: "Konnte die Mission nicht beenden, war nicht auf Deutsch..."

Now, what makes me angry is not the stupid remarks by people not knowing their own language anyway or not knowing the facts about the Game they are playing.
("Enlish pls", "This is a US server, all the rest of the game is in Englsh.. so this is stupid" etc)

What really makes me angry is, that...
A) Everything gets down-voted with or without review comments by TROLLS, if it is not in English. Until it is somewhere in the middle range. (Without any option to go dual-language at all... Do I waste two slots just to make the English speaking crowd happy? Unlikely! I want to create MORE!)
B) That certain boring missions are chosen as "out-standing" by the GMs/Cryptic team. Hello? I test most of the missions myself. You cannot tell me there wasn't something better out there than killing 11 Frigate groups and tons of small Fed soldiers to be rewarded by a mediocre dialogue in the end. OK, I will not argue about taste, please see below for alternatives...)

So two things I would ... greatly love you to think about:

1. In the Editor please add an option with little country flag icons, that allow to create dialogs multi-language. The only reason I do not write mine in English is: I have friends in the fleet that do not understand English that well. They use the German client. And if any of you would get out there into the world, you might realize, they are NOT a minority. The same goes for Spanish and all the other languages you can choose from the selection pull down menu in the Foundry.
English is the current global trade language (By any logic, it will be replaced by latinzed Chinese in a decade or two anyway), not THE Global language.

2. Make the "featured Foundry mission" a call by the players. There are TONS of better missions than the ones selected. Sorry to say that. It is just a fact. I understand you cannot review all of them. Peregrine Falcon does a great job doing that, btw...
OR: Just nominate your own GM chosen mission and one or several missions chosen by the players.

Also:

3. Please remind your player base that this client is multi-language. MULTI! As in SEVERAL languages! Not US! SEVERAL! (... and I say not US because I saw someone being downgraded for his "faulty" British English...)

So, please think about the above mentioned points, dear Cryptic studio.

I understand you go through hard times and you do have a lot on your hands... But more and more people get annoyed about above stated problems when many of them could be easily corrected.

Oh, btw, the only reason I post this here is your ticket system suggested it. ;)

They really need the quest log to have Samuel L. Jackson announce the language:
"This mission is in German. Yes, German. Do you speak it, bekk?"

I agree about multi-lingual, since I have seen some foundry scenarios that look good, but since they were authored in German (and meine deutsch ist nicht gut... eine bier bitte.) I wished I could have had an english translation to play the mission. I am sure some have said the same about english authored missions ( I have seen a few that I wish I had a translator). So let us make this a global game.

I wish there was a more robust way to support the game, allowing language selection and also adding ASCII support.

The thing is that I talked to one of the guys down-grading the non-English missions and he happily admitted, that he - and friends - did it, because they want to see English missions on top. Really made me furious, until I remembered:

OK, the "War against Stupidity" will always be a lost cause, no matter where you go.

The easiest way to prevent it is to give them what they want.

(Unless we can get Samuel L. Jackson to physically go visit them in his Pulp Fiction outfit and remind them of Ezekiel 25:17...)

Yep. I think - even if you are not able to translate a mission yourself (like, e.g. my Spanish language skills are almost non-existant), you will find people willing to help you with that on the forums.

(I already see the thread: "I'll translate yours if you'll translate mine..." ;)

So in essence it would be a win:win situation for everyone.
