I love playing Science for lots of reasons but not for the healing roles.

I have a slight criticsim of the science ships..

It all goes fine up until and including Captain rank and then goes out of whack entirely.


1 RA ship has 2 tac Boffs and one has 2 eng Boffs (they both still have 2 sci)

This means I would need to rebuild and rethink my role as some kind of hybrid and I do not want to.


I think those ships are really for Tac or Eng that for some reason want to go Science Vessel. So what are my options for a real Science vessel ?


D'kyr it is then, cos that fits in with my current and planned science builds but I just think that there should be a proper fed style science ship available at each rank.

So what was the design concept in providing the recon and deep space ? It vaffles me completely and is totally out of synch with the way Escorts and Cruisers progress. Have the devs ever commented on the reasons behind such a departure from the main progress of the science vessels ?


Oh and I do not want to sound too negative I am happy enough to go for the D'kyr and might have done anyway. I am just curious as to the rationale behind the designs.

Take a look at this great graphical comparison of Federation ships:

You'll notice that all RA ships (excluding the D'Kyr) have Cmdr. and Lt. Cmdr Boff stations for that career and then Lt. and Ensign Boffs for another career.

So RA Escorts both have Cmdr. and Lt. Cmdr Tac officer stations, with a choice of either Lt. and Ensign Eng Boffs (Fleet Escort) or Sci (Advanced Escort).

RA Cruisers both have Cmdr. and Lt. Cmdr. Eng and either a choice of Lt. and Ensign Tac for the Assault Cruiser or Science for the Star Cruiser.

Same thing with Science vessels, both have Cmdr. and Lt. Cmdr. Science Boffs, with a choice of 2 Tac officers with the Recon. or a choice of 2 Eng. officers with the Deepspace. So there's no departure in ship progression from the other 2 careers in that sense.

In addition to that, if you'd like more Science bridge officers on a Federation ship, you've got the Advanced Research Science Vessel (Retrofit) based on the Nebula class. Just assign a Lt. Science Boff to that universal stations and you've got 3 Science Boffs altogether although it does have 1 less Science console than the D'Kyr.

Finally, at VA rank you'll have the Long Range Science Vessel (Retrofit) that's based on the Intrepid that you can get with the free VA token. It's the most science oriented Federation side ship (more so than the D'Kyr) since it has Commander, Lt. Cmdr. and Ensign science bridge officer stations with an Lt. Tac and Lt. Eng stations.

So it seems like there are plenty of choices for fully science focused Federation players out there :)

There is nothing that makes any science ship better suited to an engineer or tactical captain over a science captain. You have options if you want more science BOFFs on your ship, but it absolutely does not matter what captain type you are.

The best advice anyone can give you is to pick a ship you like and spec for it. Spreading a single captain to 2 or more ships is not advisable, as you don't have that many skill points to set up both properly without being gimped.

I think that for a strong Sci build then D'kyr will be my choice and as a new player I think it is best to focus on my career so I grow into it, and not mess about with cross classing until I have really got a feel for all 3.
