You need to check the middle name on urbandictionary.com
As I understand it, it's mainly a British term hence why the profanity filter is working :D

When I was a kid, Radio 1 used to do a roadshow in the UK and one of the features was "******* the Gorilla". It would never happen today but back then it was just seen as a bit of harmless innuendo. A man in a suit prancing about in a silly quiz feature.
Times change and sensibilities, concepts of slang and crudeness change and evolve with it. Even the most offensive word in the English language was originally just a Saxon word for "groove/notch" that was used in slang for what we now know it to mean.
The history of language is full of examples of beg, steal or borrow.
To be honest I get annoyed with purists who say "You can't use that word it doesn't exist". The only reason language exists is because people invent and use words to convey ideas. New words come into existence and old ones fade... just like the stars in the curtain of night.
Language is there to serve the people... not people to serve the language.

I used to travel a great deal in my work as an IT consultant, and I was always on the lookout for strange, unusual and just plain freakish names. Since my wife works in HR, she'd encounter some as well. We still get a chuckle out of "Khlav Kalash," which was some sort of undefined ethnic New York food cart comestible that Homer Simpson discovered in an episode some years ago. It just so happens that my wife once reviewed a job application and a resume from a fellow (?) named "Khlav Kalash," too. :D
FWIW, I can't imagine that the questionable doff names are accidents. IMO, at least *some* of them have to be the result of the devs having a little fun. :)

I guess that he never got around to it. I looked on the exchange for a blue Klingon DOFF named Krap but the closest I could find is a green Klingon named Kraac, which I guess is almost as good. If he were not 2 million EC, I might be tempted to by him so that I could send Kraac on a mission to acquire contraband.

And just how is that "questionable"? I really hope you're not trying to insinuate that the word "gay" is somehow "questionable" or "objectionable". But yeah, I know you just did. I hardly think that the word deserves or needs to be filtered. That's pretty insulting, thanks.

What is sad is that they filter that but create DOFFS with names like F'ukk and Sh'it (per Anon). Just seems a little hypocritical.

The non-human names are generated algorithmically. So, there are a list of prefix phonemes and a list of suffix phonemes, and the system generates them when the duty officers are initially made. Since there are literally tens of thousands of duty officers, we can't do them by hand. Unfortunately, changing the names of offenders is problematic, because anytime a change is made to duty officers it will regenerate those names, and since they are based on the same seed, the offending names reemerge.
What we've been doing is, on a case by case basis, removing some of the phonemes from individual species phoneme name files.

Well, consider the combinations: Male and Female. Each species. Each faction (since a couple of species can be in both factions). Each specialization. Each quality. Six versions of each of those. Plus uniques. Plus new ones coming with the DS9 additions.
It adds up fast.

Damnit man you can't just say things like this and leave us hanging, heart attack runs in some of our families you know. At least post an unrelated screenshot that has the top half of a face for us to speculate on.
On a serious note, I think the filter system could use some tweaking for races - as it is quite a few races aren't even in the filter, and the more that come the less useful that part of the filter is becoming.

Both factions will have access to Cardassians. Federation will have access to Bajorans. KDF will have access to Ferasans, a warrior, frequently telepathic off-shoot of the Caitian species, much like the Romulans and Vulcans.
We are also planning several other species as well, time and resources permitting.
