I don't think they'd have another way to allow entry into the contest. I don't have a Facebook account either (and never will). That said, I'm not sure I would mark 'like' on something that currently is in a dubious state for me even if I had said account.

*giggle*

I thought the same thing.

But seriously, so long as you are wise with the information you choose to share with the world (I'd recommend beginning with lying about your date of birth...) then privacy concerns can be addressed.

Sadly, the way the media world is going, you won't be able to do much outside of a social network before long. Best find ways to deal with it.

/tinfoilhat.

I will personally never understand the people who share their entire life story on a network that is probably, inevitably, going to be hacked eventually. Sony proved just how laughable the concept of "Cloud = Security" is, and as soon as these companies wake up to the fact that hackers are two steps ahead of bureaucratic IT departments, the better off we'll all be.

This said, BranFlakes, even if I did 'Like' you on Facebook, the amount of misrepresentation on my accout would probably lead you to ask for 100 points of ID. :p

I'm more concerned about what the company themselves will do with it--e.g. sell it. Why exactly are we not entitled to royalty payments for the sale of our information, the same as we would be if for example we posted a short story that we wrote and they sold that? Apparently telling the company when and where you were born and what things you like constitutes giving them ownership of that information as far as the rights to sell and use it go. If the company is going to sell my data, then I want at least 20% of the money that they are making from doing so--or is it somehow not legally my data?

At the risk of going off topic (I'd be happy to take this to PMs) the topic of the ownership of personal information is, interestingly, something being challenged in the European Union right now.

If it goes the way most people seem to think it will (Europeans love this stuff) then Facebook's policies in Europe may have to be drastically changed.

No.

Just a few reasons off the top of my head:
- Time gated event content (Deferi Invasion/The Vault), with more on the way.
- Committing dev resources to limited run missions. (Utopia Planitia/Hearts and Minds)
- Back peddling on KDF content development intentions.
- The continuing head in the sand mentality when it comes to STF loot tables.
- Removing the website calendar and outsourcing the job to the community.
- A subpar/rushed/broken FE series (YMMV) with future FE's up in the air.
- The crafting overhaul being pushed back.
- The vaporware 700 day Veteran Reward Android bridge officer.
- Continued poor QA process; a recent example being the known UI tray scramble bug.
- No new story progression mission content in Season 6.
- Developers buying exploitable items from the exchange. (Yellowstone engines/Gold Ferengi lock boxes)
- The introduction of Lobi crystals/store, at the expense of GPL and the dev thread asking for GPL store suggestions.
- The false advertising of the Ferengi lock box rewards and failure to rectify the issue.
- The complete whitewash of a certain matter to do with account hacking.
- Ignoring these issues and asking me to "Like" on Facebook.

No.
I won't be clicking "Like" on Facebook.

So then, don't 'like' it on Facebook. I don't use it myself. It's bad enough anyone who uses my computer to access Wikipedia can see from the Google adds I recently purchased a pair of sweatpants, I'm not volunteering any more information to anyone. They only use it for evil. Marketing research, they call it. I join Facebook, like STO, BOOM! Sweatpants on the C-store! Wailing and gnashing of teeth!

It's kind of sad maybe that Cryptic has to resort to a sort of open bribery on Facebook, but then again, all the cool companies do it already, so why would they let themselves be left behind.

Good luck everyone. I hope those 5000 C-points are a comfort to you, when they come for you, with your pictures of last year's halloween wardrobe malfunction and your browser history, making you work for no pay so they can compete against the African and Asian industry, making my ill-fitting sweatpants! Think about it have they ever earned a "Like" from us after all the debacles we continue and have gone through? Well i don't have Facebook for many others reasons like the posts prior, so i see there point. Well many people are not happy with STO and Cryptic and PWE's handling of the MMO and the Star Trek IP. Well in order to listen to us maybe we should "dislike" them if they have a button for it and maybe when they compare the numbers maybe they will get the message the Community resentment is evident and not limited to some odds and ends threads.

So do what you believe it should be and not some moth to the flame with some hope you might get CP, so i think they are bribing us to produce positive PR for them while after what happened with the Hacking scandal there image has been tarnished, hence they go back to the game sites and say "look at all our likes we are special" but we all know what this game is like because we play it.

Something to consider, do what you believe and not what you can get.

I went ahead and "liked" it.

Not because I "like" lockboxes.

Not because I "like" gated content.

Not because I "like" the current state of the Lobi store.

Not because I "like" the fact that Cryptic has a hard time delivering story content.

Not because I "like" how the KDF has been back-burnered.

Not because I "like" inflated C-Store prices.

Not because I "like" buggy releases.

However --

I do like the Duty Officer system.

I do like the Featured Episodes. (You guys better rethink any notion of not doing more of them...)

I do like Star Trek.

I do like the artwork.

I do like the Foundry (when it works right).

I do like PvE space combat.

And I really like the idea of getting extra C-Points. If I win, I'll either buy a cool ship, convert it to Dilithium, or blow it on Master Keys to see what happens.

Exactly. I still play the game. How can I really truthfully say that I don't like it when I play every chance I get?

As much as there is not to like about how Cryptic/PW runs this game, there's still a lot left that's worth liking.

Since I do still play, I could use some free CP to get stuff I want that's not in my budget. I know the odds of actually getting it are probably pretty bad, but it doesn't cost me anything to put a "like" on Facebook for a game I actually do like most of the time.

I don't think I will. There's just not much left to like about this game beyond my attachment to my established characters and ships, which is frankly all that keeps me playing, albeit less and less. There's just nothing left to do that's new, that isn't pointless (mining 'event') or hidden behind a time gate (Vault shuttle event, Defera Invasion).

There's not even anything to explore or discover in this galaxy of shoeboxes. Why can't I explore the various nebulae and catalogue new flora and fauna or cosmozoans, and fill out a Star Trek Online bestiary of sorts? Similar to the Accolades list?

There's even less to look forward to, what with the edging away from proper Featured Episode and story content, and the widescale embracing of ridiculous time-gated events I'll never get to see, and cool things (MACO BO) being hidden behind a pay-gate however you look at it - either I grind forever to get enough dilithium to buy enough keys to unlock enough lockboxes to gather enough lobi to buy it (unreasonably expensive time investment considering people have lives to live) or I outright buy it (also unreasonable when you consider how obvious it is that so little of the money we spend int he C-store is being returned into this game to improve it).

Since Facebook is not a viable means of gaining traction within the community and really is a stupid idea for businesses to use, I cannot justify the effort. as another poster mentioned this is currently being challenged in europe. aside from that, technically you're right. frankly its a lawsuit waiting to happen. just because it says you agree to something in the tos doesn't mean you actually do or that requiring such is actually legal. point being, if you really wanted to make an issue of it theres no doubt you could. its only a matter of time before they screw someone over royally and they put a stop to ripping peoples info off.

that being said...

1. if you have to bribe people to 'like' you thats really saying something. what is this really branflakes? a plan to make it look like people are supporting you after the hacking incident? cause we all know handing out free points isn't being done out of the goodness of cryptics heart.

I recently created a Facebook account and "Liked" you guys. Can't wait to find out if I win. :D

I highly doubt it. They're letting it run for an entire month. That's 4-5 weeks. In that time they'll quite likely see tens of thousands of Likes.

Guess how many winners? Only 3.

Our chances of winning anything are substantially less than 0.001%

Considering that the STP fB page has over 134k likes, I expect no chance at winning anything.

And why can't it be C-Points instead of STO points? Wouldn't doing CP raise the likes more since it would draw more Cryptic fans to the page, thus raising the popularity?

Yes but will you do this all the time or not.

Seriously. 3 winners out of 134,000.

Everyone's chances of winning was around 0.00223880597%

Cheapest prize ever.

But congratulations to the three winners for beating the odds.

Still better drop rates than the STF tech drops.

I don't care I didn't win because I was already in the mind set that I wouldn't, but I've got to ask, do any of the winners actually still play the game? your entries where done via facebook and not the STO account server... the odds that these winners don't play the game and won't ever play the game again are very strong.

But congrats to all the winners

I never started......but I would click the link that says Cryptic Disappoints me on a regular basis much like the stock market and my 401k....everyday it gets worse. :(

Great ideas and requests fall on deaf ears or are mutilated so badly that by the time it goes live it is has the same name as the suggestion, but the features have been watered down until they are unrecognizable...:(
