This is a sequel of sorts to my star cruiser video produced a few months ago, which had the barest hint of a plot and a simple 2 player cooperative mission. It wasn't an attempt to create a Star Trek episode out of STO, but focus more on its space combat presentation.
This video I made today has exactly the same spirit - it acknowledges the status quo of STO faction development as, for better or for worse, has always been Federation centric to cater to the majority of its playerbase.
Having for the past few months slowly brought together a band of like-minded players and starship pilots who play STO for the combat simulation aspect and the Captain's Chair perspective (and nothing else - so we can enjoy the game to the max), this is why I decided to make a Federation fleet, as it was much easier to reach out to newer players, and returning veterans by operating in the majority where the Federation faction is.
As to the content - this is the Ground Zero mission in the Hobus system on elite difficulty. It's nothing special, no optional, no max DPS butt kicking we're accustomed to in Elite STFs. The reason is this - DPS is not everything. This game, though not canon Star Trek, is still Star Trek, and there are more facets to space combat than merely loading up a quartet of DHCs and putting them on rapid fire.
Nay, I use these "mission replays", coupled with TNG-era storytelling, as a bridge between solo play and STF team play. Cadets will be exposed to realistic mission and command and control environments where they can learn to master from both the pilot, and the wing commander's end. They'll learn how to give and take orders in a style that is minimally intrusive with the maximum of tactical efficiency... by roping in collaborative decision making, mutual situational awareness and a template of tactical combat strategies that would be familiar with persons who have knowledge in air and naval combat in history.
Without further ado, this is the spirit of this fan video. It's not meant to show anything special, it's created for the men and women who have flown with me for the last few months and have become silent, effective line of battle pilots.
And then I thought why not, why make it yet another fleet video that only we would enjoy? Why not make it into generic Space Opera, and see if slow motion videos could bring back some of the epicness of Star Trek as we grew up with?
Ladies and gentlemen, I present - "2409 - Endless War II - Odyssey Wing Operations" (http://youtu.be/pmFm-wl9Hcw)
Ps. This other link below is the original "2409 Endless War" video back in March. I wanted to capture the same slow motion 'battleship' feel but improving both the tempo of combat and of course, portraying 5 pilots in a cooperative mission instead of 2.
