I'm getting the same error...
Edit: Different error this time around... it just threw me out without giving me the "map is full" error but I am now stuck at "Connecting to the login server..."
Also, comments about how this is a "stupid bug" and that it "should not be happening" are frankly ridiculous. It's a beta. Did Cryptic intend for this to happen? Of course not. Does this (or something very like it) and a collection of other obvious launch errors errupt throughout the open beta phase of every MMO? Of course they do. We're stress testing the game now so that Cryptic can fix these "stupid bug(s)" before the game hits the shelves.

Edit: Now the Login Server is timming out. Guess the stress & volume test Open Beta style shows room for improvement.

This needs to happen.
They need to know if their systems can handle a massive load, and they've just learned it can't.

All connects and even the website suffer from delayed response.

Welll, things are progressing in a slightly more positive direction! To begin with, client response is snappy and shows no signs of lag (even while logging in) and I was able to complete the first small portion of the tutorial before I was being asked to beam over to the next ship. At this point, after interacting with the transporter, I again recieved the "full map" error and was kicked from the game.

I knew this would happen, it went from a small number of closed beta testers to almost the whole planet, Cryptic just needs to add more servers/clusters to get it sorted and the auto-instance selection is a good thing in this situation, it picks an instance that is not full and when none are, it disconnects you.
Annoying since they shouldn't have had this issue in open beta, but i guess it can't be helped, i will wait a few hours or something, such a put off to be honest.

The game should not "boot"us if it cannot find an instance. It should before you transport, the game should find a free instance, or just send us back to the original map.
Does anyone know where to post suggestions?

I have had the same problems involving logging in due to map congestion. I had hoped that due to the somewhat infamous choice of 'Heavy instancing' that this would not be as prevalent today. Apparently they need 'Heavier Instancing?'
As to dumping, I would rather wait in queue while maps become available. I got dumped during the tutorial for switching to a new area. I was trying to speed through the early area to lessen the load for other people to login/get a map, but I guess other people were doing that too.

A note on bug reporting...
Map too full or unable to connect due to server issues aren't bugs. They are normal inconveniences that you will find anytime you try connecting to a MMO the first day of OB or first day of retail release. It also doesn't have to be posted in multiple forums.
Bugs are things that are actually wrong with the game and not just server problems caused by too many people connecting at once. Granted, it would be good not to kick you all the way out or to have a queue system in place for logging in, but that goes in the feedback forum rather than the bug forum.

I've been disconnected from the server a couple of times. Finally, I had to spend several minutes connecting to the server, and then several more retrieving list of characters, then several more accessing the maps, and now it's loading slowly, with the Star Trek logo in the foreground, and behind it is the image of the outdoor transporter pad and the graphics are flashing to and fro like a drunk drag queen. Now it's logged me out again. Starting process again.

Logging in from Europe and also having very long wait times for retrieving the character list and an eventual "map is full" error.
Also, I played a while ago through a part of the tutorial, which looked fine to me, but got disconnected at the part where you destroy 4 active probes. After logging in again I was at the stage before that (destroying damaged probes) and could not find a way to get back to the next area.
On another note: a surprising number of people seem to think they're playing a finished product. You're not, you knew this in advance. This is a beta product with flaws, glitches, errors and God knows what else. That's why we're doing this, to make sure it doesn't happen on February 2nd. If you want to enjoy awesome, smooth gameplay you should not have joined the beta testing process.
EDIT: I was able to log back in, but my quest log indicates I need to beam survivors to the Seacole, which is not the part of the quest I'm actually on.

I will not sit in a Que to play a game that I pay to play for one thing so I really hope they have enough servers to support the players. I can not even comment on how the game play is because I have not been able to get into the game to play it. That would make sense if they needed to be able to repeat the problem and it involved a unique situation. This issue is just when everyone hits "play" and the sever comes back and says "not really".

I just hope this is not going to be the way they run things in the future. I play many MMO's and know some down time will happen but not on Open Beta it just make you guys look bad, like there was poor planning involved or you just want our money. this isn't about interim fixes, it is about finding a permanent solution, that you are staring more at the login procedures (like I am) is part of an open beta. This game only has '1' server so waiting queues really aren't a good option in your end product, thusly they serve no purpose in your open beta.

You do have the option to manualy select an instance...given that you manage to get in the game first and change an opion (I don't remember where, but I think was when you click on the small down arrow near your minimap and choose "change instance" in the window that pops up you will see a tick box where it says something like "manualy select instance". There is no way many people would sit in a Que and wait to play a game they have to pay for, I know there is no way in Hell I would. That kind of screws up the how limited down time the Dev guys were going for when they were making the game, I know in many interviews they spoke about how this game would have low down times. If you can't stand the reality of an open beta, do not enter it. That you paid (which you didn't but alas) or not is irrelevant, it clearly noted this is open beta which very clearly means it is going to be buggy, it is going to disconnect, it is going to do wierd things and yes it can even (though highly unlikely) destroy the data on your pc.
This is the first day of the stress test, so it is supposed to be the worst. If it is still disconnecting this much on january 20th, then one might start considering cancelling preorders

One major issue with this problem is that any skill point changes you make prior to trying to head to the next map (which is full, and you get dumped out of the game) are lost, for whatever reason. (The points themselves are not though, thankfully).
Makes me worry that other possible crashes - including those that could well survive into the release client (because the client could crash from a user's computer throwing up its own errors, etc) - that could/would happen at the same point would also result in these points being dropped. That would be a pretty large issue is so. Ideally, this information should be nailed down as soon as you hit the accept button - not at some later point where map changing can wipe it off.

So my advice to you is, stay cool, play something else for awhile and go back to STO after a half an hour to an hour and see if things are golden. I personally will see if I can't toy around with the Character system or check out STOked (forums for them are back up).

Its been six hours now since open beta and so far the only response from Cyptic that we've gotten is "we know there's a problem!"
Honestly, with a game that only has ONE server this should not be an issue. Your maps should be designed to accommodate an unlimited number of players.

Here is what I know. i made a character. Named him Gorilla. He is sort of a biker Andorian. Got logged in started the tutorial and saw something about Borg, but then I realized there was no sound. So I exited, unplugged my m-audio fast track, and logged back in. Next thing I know it says the server is full.
So the problem seems pretty obvious to me. The Borg have assimilated the servers. ;)

Okay, lets clarify for the millionth time, there is more than one server, you can move between servers in game as you please. The system should be exactly like Champions Online from what I'm hearing from Cryptic. Each server can usually hold a max of 100 people per server, or at least it did for Champions. I saw at least 5 servers, but it went by in a blink of an eye, so I could not really see how many people were on each server or how many servers were set up.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Same here. This is Cryptic's version of the server is full and you get to sit in a queue from WOW. I am sure as soon as people exit the tutorial, it will sort itself out, but with the shard system Cryptic uses this shouldn't really be happening.

we will not give cryptic a break.. based on active closed beta keys, and current pre-orders (all of wich grant open beta access), we should not be having these issues.. they should have fixed these issues in between closed and open.. and been prepared to handle the log-ins and play of enough players that HAVE ACCESS..
Gosh I'm glad this is a PG rated forums, so I don't have to tell people like you and Angrymouse (for example) what I think of your attitude. Its first day of Open Beta, of course things are going to go wrong.

rawr nerd rage, devs suck, bugs shouldn't be happening, blah blah blah
I'm guessing all the whiners have never been a beta tester before. What did you expect? You are being allowed to participate in the final testing stages before game release. They need to know what kind of things that need to be fixed before live launch. The game isn't completely finished. Stress test means just that. They need to know how much the servers can take before it crashes, make adjustments and try again. This is their period to find what's wrong with the game, what they overlooked, listen to the feed back from players on how it could be better so that they can release a quality game experience next month. You are not playing the game. You are a guinea pig to assist in fine tuning the game. Grow up and deal with it.
That being said, yes I am receiving the same errors. First attempt at character creation the game got stuck on the loading maps page and I had to exit out because it froze up. The first character I created did not save. Frustrating yes because it took me a couple hours to get the character set up how I wanted, but meh, it happens. I made a second attempt and got the maps are full error and was booted to the login screen. I am happy to see that my second character creation attempt did indeed save so I don't have to redo it a third time, but I have yet to actually be able to log into the game yet and it's been doing this for around 3 hours or so. My husband managed to get into the tutorial and was booted about halfway through with a server crash.
I finally made it into the tutorial, and as soon as I tried to beam to the other ship I got booted with the map is full error again.

You have no idea how much I agree with that statement, that it scares me.
I mean, ITS THE FIRST DAY OF OPEN BETA, for WoW it was the same thing, for STW same thing, For EQ1 and EQ2 guess what... SAME THING!!! My point is, for as long as there have been MMO's there have been Open Beta, and for as long as there has been Open Beta, there was always that first week of beta pains.
My advice to everyone is simply this: Suck it up, seriously, bare with it for awhile, because we're doing a great service to Cryptic by letting them know about even small problems like overloaded servers. That way, there won't be problems like this latter on. (Not including the first month of Launch... cause that will feel like the first few days of Open Beta too, so prep for that as well.)

It's beta, its beta, it's beta. I love this battlecry of the ever faithful. You only have another few weeks to utilize that excuse.
Open beta = Stress Testing servers. That just means that so far Cryptic is failing their stress test. No big deal. I'm sure in a week or 2 the OB people will be able to actually access the game. Unfortunately a couple days later, the release will happen and the influx of even more people will stress the servers even more. According to the CB posters this happens every time an influx of people occurs.
What battlecry will people use on Release Day?
"Its day one, there's bound to be problems, relax people"
6 months on
"Its only been out for 6 months people, relax"
There will always be people defending, and people griping.
I personally only look at how fast the game developers respond to problems, the contingency plans they have in place, and the rate and depth at which they communicate these plans to their potential customer base.

Haven't you been reading? There *are* multiple servers but they are not set up like traditional mmo's do with naming the servers and being restricted to the server you choose. These have no names, and you get assigned to the instance of the server that has room, but you are not restricted to just one. When you are grouped with people you get to go to the instance that that group member is in so you don't get seperated. Just because you don't see a physical name tied to the server list doesn't mean there is only one. The problem lies in thousands of people trying to log in at the same time. All 'instances' are full and keep filling.

Your testing the game by trying to play and stress testing the servers and instances. You should be submitting bug reports so cryptic can get a solid handle on how often the problem is occuring. If you have never been in a beta before this is how it works, especially on the first day of the open beta of a massivley anticipated game like STO.
So just deal with the problems or wait a few days for the initial rush and stress on the front end of the game to die down as cryptic makes adjustments and people filter through the game so that every one is not trying to log into the same instance at the same time.

Personally I am not upset, I would like to be playing right now, but I understand they are stress testing.
However, not being able to play at all is frustrating for people that payed money to play this game as I did. I am patient, and love the game so far so I am willing to wait. But Cryptic must be aware that other people are not as patient as I am. It’s been two hours since I got booted for the map error, and I have been unable to log on since.
If Cryptic was wise they would at least let us know how long we should expect to wait, even just a heads up would be nice. A lot of us could be doing other things then trying to log in every ten minutes. It just makes a bad situation worse. If you can, try to give us some sort of time frame.

Yes it is the first day of beta.

As of yet the only mistake I have seen is not defining that Beta is our chance to help them improve the game and troubleshoot bugs before launch. Our reward is a chance to play the game at no initial cost during this final phase of development. If you are concerned about a polished final product wait for the early launch or final launch on 2/2 when you are actually paying for it.. All bugs aside I am glad to have the chance to play it at all as I find the game itself to be incredible when it is working.
