View Full Version : Client Download Speed

Hi
I pre-ordered through atari. I was directed to the /download page and have now tried all of the recommendations available to me. At best, my download will complete in 10 days time. This is not what i expected when i purchased this game. I understand that this is the open beta segment, but that part was apart of the advertised package. I find it unfair that D2D users are given a high-speed download, but I have to wait 10 days and miss out of most of the beta. Why are faster download links not available?

I'm having the same problem as you. I'm not sure how long it will take to download but I haven't even gotten close to 1% yet?

Same here. Preodered from amazon, hate torrent and all other options are awfull. Someone upload this to rapidshare already or any other good download option for that matter...

Same with me. I estimate that my dl will be finished in just 70 hours or so. This is the first and last time I ever try this again.

This message is for anyone at Cryptic who cares in the slightest bit. I really wanted to order through your parent company but the download speed in not acceptable. I have cancelled my atari pre-order and have gone with Direct 2 Drive.
Fileplanet Speed for Atari DL = 0-20kbs
D2D download speed = 50-150kbs
I am sorry to loose the 500 cryptic points, but waiting 10days to get in the beta was just too much for me. Sorry.

I agree that the downloading of the open beta client stinks heavily. The best speed I'm getting (I pre-ordered from Amazon) is 60-90kb a second from the torrent. My cable modem fairly recently upgraded their service so I could download 1.8 megabytes a second (on average). I am very disappointed.

Yep, 4 days to download the 7.8Gig client, but then you have a 10Gig patch. I might be lucky to get downloaded by the time the head start begins.

i have been DL since last night from like 6 pm ESt to 11 pm it took me up to 8 percent... i have even tried disabling my firewall to make it go faster.. currently i am t 19 percent speed is fluxuating wildly.. it would help to know w hat ports they are trasmitting on so we can add them to firewall exceptions

It is not a firewall issue, it is a "Cryptic dropping the ball" issue. The same download is used for the Fileplanet version as is the D2D version. The D2D version is MUCH MUCH faster. Since the few moment ago when I changed to D2D, I have been getting a steady 150 kb/s. Same downloaded, but fileplanet is trying to force to to make a 7$ purchase on the back of a game that the PARENT COMPANY (atari) should have found a reliable way of distributing their own beta. Fileplanet was just looking to make a quick buck, and I bet a whole bunch of future STO player bought their so-called premium speeds.

I have beta tested alot of MMO's in my time (Fall Earth, LotRO, WAR, ect) and played just about every other mmo out there and I have never, NEVER come accross suck a cluster-beep- in a company getting their game out to the open (or closed for that matter) beta testers. This is just plain insanity. I have been trying to download since yesterday afternoon and have been rewarded first with FilePlanet opening its download manager and taking 15 min "preparing file for download" and then getting an error saying the server is overloaded. Tried every free server download with the same result. Then I finually started to get the file to get past the prep stage to get in line, only to wait until it was my turn and then have it get a few minutes into the DL and then fail with message that the download is corrupt. Finually last night I get fileplanet to start downloading at zero dark 30 (at 20 kb a sec...thats blazing...*sarcasim*) and go to bed. I wake up to find that the download failed 535mb into the file. Thats just stellar. Now keep in mind that I didnt just limit myself to the fileplanet download method either. I tried using bit torrent, which I use quite regularly with no problems. I got the torrent from the official star trek online site and start bit torrent and.....nothing. 116 peers and 0 seeders. That continued until this morning at ten o'clock. I also, in my desperation to get some method of download (both because of my geekish need to play the game and the fact that file had open slighed and challenged me just as if it had walked over and slapped my face with its digital glove) I tried the sights "star trek online downloader" that it had posted as a last resort for all us chumps trying to get the file. This method did indeed smoothly open and start downloading, but at a rate that after 4 hours yeilded 0.01% of the download complete. At that rate I would die a very old man with it still not finished. SO finually at about 10 am this morning fileplanet actually (praise jesus) actually started working, abait at squirts of 0.00 to 52 kb per sec which will put the down load at several days from finishing....but at least its working. AND bit torrent started working with 6 seeds and 44 peers connected to give me a 160-185 kbps download speed that will finish in approx 11 hours from now. Thats if the gods are happy and the planets alined and bit torrent stays stable with seeders connected. SO finually I get to my point....WHAT THE *&^$#@%% WAS THE DEVS THINKING!!!!! (or were they not) when they set up the method of destributing the open beta client? I have to say this is the most epic fail I have seen since matrix online came out ( and that was bad). Heres to hoping that the game is much much better and that patches are either handled different or nonexistant. And Devs..... shame on you.

I as well am only pulling about 60k/s. If there is another 10g of patches, I may never get to play. I payed good money to get my chance at the open beta. What is the problem?? Why doesn't Atari have a place to download from?? Thats who I bought my preorder from. When I try to go the sites that say if you have preordered, it says that I have to purchase it again. I have been waiting, much like everyone else on this thread to get my chance at this great game. I expected to be playing by now. PLEASE HELP US CRYPTIC!!!!

Unless things change I'm not entirely sure I may continue with my subscription (especially after reading this thread and the non response). Happy Downloading! :(

I've been downloading the torrent for nearly 2 days now, It was REALLY slow the first day, but it's picking up slack now.
I'm on 63%, it's gone up more in the last hour than it did in the first 12.
Hopefully I will have finished the download by tonight for my day off tomorrow. Booked it off especially!! :D

I perused the sites and decided a borg would be cool so I ordered at amazon yesterday only to be told that at Amazon you get your beta key 2 days after you place your order by 2 diferent folks over there. I guess it doesnt make a fing difference with the link at fileplanet thats boken and 2 web sites in german that dont want to work wtf!!! pre order for beta is a bunch of BS. Even if somehow Amazon comes through I will never have the damn game even downloaded before the end of the month and at the STO it says new download sites will be added soon. How about a week or 2 ago???? How can u bone it this bad??/ Droped on your head what???

"Star_Trek_OB_ST_0_20100108a.zip could not be saved, because the source file could not be read."
This was the message I got after waiting for 17 crazy hours for this thing to only get 38% done. I'm on a brand new, freshly formatted computer and my internet connection isn't terrible. Needless to say I was baffled and annoyed...but what can you do? So, I downloaded it again. "great, only 9 more hours to go..." 3 hours later, I got the same message at 6%. My computer's transfer rate was regularly about 280-300k/s from file planet while the STO Downloader never seemed to get above 15 for some reason. Is there a more reliable/faster place for me to download this client from? I wanna play so bad! :(:(:(

To be honest given that there are likely lots of people downloading the client download speeds are going to suck, there is only so much bandwidth available and bandwidth trust me is expensive, it may take time but remember that a Beta is a Beta.
I've only just started downloading the installer and have on average 116k a second so its not terrible, I guess its a reason to leave my computer on over night.

I am like most here I tried fileplanet it was a joke after 2hours I had 40mb of file. I actually called cryptic to see if they had a solution the tech support told me to try the torrent. It is faster at time but still over a day to download the file. As many people have said this will take forever with a 10g patch.
Has anyone here paid file planet there 7 dollars and if so is it faster and I mean around the 200-300kbs area not 150

This is seriously ridiculous. It took forever just to get FilePlanet to work. After being forced to sign up for it and download their little program, it told me I had to wait in line for 20 minutes. Over an hour later it finally started to download. It started at about 2 am. 12 hours later it had downloaded 1.25 gigs out of over 7. Now I've got the torrent going but it won't be done for one or two days at this rate. Would it have been so hard to release discs with the program on it for people who preordered? They sent out the cards, they should have come with an install disc. If they can't even get the beta right, what's the actual release going to be like?

Granted, bandwidth is expensive, but cryptic promised me something when I gave up my 79 bucks. I'm sure I'm not the only ubergeek who bought this "Extra profitable collector's special edition" so they should be able to give us the bandwidth we need. Not to bash on you, but I can just see this becoming an "Oh, well its still in beta stages, give it a break" thing between people and I frankly don't think its fair to the those who PAID to get in on the beta when closed beta testers, who didnt pay, probably got their client in less than a day.

All I can say is that it will be a cold day in hell before I ever send File Planet a nickel of my money.
This is like extortion, they make me wait (75 minutes atm) to download something I already paid for. Not only that, but they make no guranttee of what kind of download speed I might be able to get even if I fork overthe $7.
There is no download site for Digital River? WTF not?
There are two new German download sites that don't seem to work and I don't read German so How do I know I'm even downloading the English client?
This does not bode well for Star Trek Online.

A buddy of mine pre-ordered through Steam and he got right in and is playing right now. Unfortunately I went through Atari as I wanted to not have STO linked to my Steam account (just a personal preference thing). If you don't mind STO being linked up to Steam they are worth a shot!

I have looked at numberious threads about this worthless client download problem and it looks like the 2 places that people lucked out is those who bought with either steam or direct2drive. Both have thier own independant download links, servers and facilities and the chatter from everyone who bought from them is that they spent no more than 2 hours downloading and are now playing. I pre-ordered from gamestop for an instore pick up and I am going to call them about seeing if I can cancle my order as they dont charge you until you pick up the disk on release day. If you can cancle your orders or are willing to swallow a $60 loss you can repreorder the game ( I prefere D2D as steam is kinda invasive with their copy protection) from one of the two that actually hold up on their promise of giving you access to the open beta.
On a more personal note from me to cyrptic and anyone else involved with developing this game....you will not get another penny from me as a future costomer, you are formally blacklisted by myself and Im guess many others. Have fun sucking jerks
