View Full Version : Flickering Graphics

Hey all,

while I have been getting the "Map is full" error, I did manage to get in to the tutorial once. When I was inside the graphics were flickering like mad, sometimes everything but the UI would go out, sometimes it would just be a black slash across the screen. I am running a ATI Radeon X4350 mobile graphics card on a laptop. Last night I updated the drivers, then when I was getting the flickering I tried rolling them back. Now I'm getting the Map is full error, which is understandable what with the server load and all, so I haven't been able to test in game with the driver rolled back, however at the character selection screen I still get the flickering, so I'm guessing it'll still be there once I'm in game. Any thoughts?

EDIT: This is NOT the loading screen issue that many are reporting! This is an in-game graphical issue that makes the game UNPLAYABLE!

Remember to hit the green bug in game to report the bug properly. You will be prompted for a description. Don't just post here

I've beta tested many times before, I know how it works ;) bug reported, details and all, I was just wondering if anyone around here had found a fix for this issue or was having the same problem.

I get a litle flickering too, but really only on a LOADING screen where only the background flickers madly. This is running on a Radeon HD5870 card.

I get this same thing... But I'm running an Nvidia GTX260 with the 191.07 WHQL drivers. Since you have this on an ATI/AMD card that indicates this is an issue with their game engine! It's really an epilepsy hazard! I wonder if Cryptic has incorporated a disclaimer for that yet?

So after managing to connect and run around a little, it doesn't make the game entirely unplayable, but almost, I imagine if I was in a serious combat situation I'd be unable to make it through. Hope there's a fix coming, but that's the way beta goes! :)

I get the same issue with the backgrouond loading screens on the 9800gtx+ on latest drivers. In game is fine, although choppy in places

Anyone come up with a workaround for this with the ATI cards?
I just made it into the space part of the tutorial and it's impossible to play with this graphics issue, a total showstopper, I really hope this gets fixed by release because if it doesn't it looks like I'm out of luck as far as playing this game is concerned.

At the loading screen the edges blink like a strobe light. I had to remove my friend from the room as she is prone to seizures and this was happening alot. I have noticed this since closed beta, but thought it might be my graphic card. Going to attempt it on several computers before I actually bug it tho.

How about in game?
you would know if you were getting what I'm talking about, you literally can't see anything on screen except for blocks of colors, occasionally if you get the camera *just* right you can see a ship and maybe a bit of starfield.

Actuall the loading screen flicker is a know issue, also the loading screens have not been finished, The finished ones actually look really cool.

I heard of this bug in CB and the fix was to turn of AA.

It's already off by default, but thanks for the suggestion.

Not if you are using the recommended settings... by default my setup had 4x AA turned on. I've cranked it to a more acceptable 8x.

For me it has Anti-Aliasing greyed out and it says that it's "not supported by this GPU"

I am also having this problem. i have an ATI HD 5770. i get a little flickering in the loading screen but when i am in the tutorial the screen flickers like mad and is unplayable. i had driver version 9.12 at first and then went back to 9.11 to see if that would help. No go, problem still exists. i have tried almost every setting i can think of. even going down to the lowest. Im not sure what to do?

I have the very same issue with CO. I installed it a few weeks ago to try it out. I didn't like the game much so i didn't bother trying to fix it. I installed EVE and counter strike also just for kicks and do not have the problem with them.

Im excited to play and test STO and would like to get this worked out

Where is this green button for future refrence?

I've done pretty much everything I can think of as well, such as messing with Catalyst's settings and modifying all the options in game. Guess it's just wait and see time, hopefully this is an issue cryptic cares enough about to give us some feedback on.

Near your map and the clock, it's literally shaped like a bug.

Cryptic Help!

That is identical to my issue, as sorry as I am that you're having the same issue, it is kind of nice to know that it's not exclusive to mobile ATI cards, I was worried that they'd never get around to fixing it if it only affected those of us using ATI mobile cards on a laptop.

P.S. Make sure you report it as a bug in game.

So I've continued to soldier through the tutorial, and when I made it to the point where you fight the active probes over the vega colony I had almost no flickering issues, there was one spot that caused my GFX to flicker if I pointed the camera at it, but it was small, for the most part it was fine, however after defeating the probes and beaming down I started get the same problem, worse than ever.

I'm giving up on it for now, hopefully this gets fixed before launch, would be a shame to wait for a game for years and then not be able to play it because Cryptic overlooked a GPU issue. Anyway, I'll peruse the thread in the morning to see if anyone's had any grand ideas on how to fix it.

i continued on as well but when i got to the ship part of the tutorial it was so bad i couldnt even navigate at all. i am gunna take a break for awhile. i submitted a ticket so maybe that will help.

No, i'm getting this too... it's prety bad at both sides of the screen... i'd say about the 1/4 of each side of the monitor when you are retrieving maps and then it says 'loading'....

BTW, this doesn't happen anywhere else. GTX250 maxcore card here all full settings including 8x AA, 16x AF

This issue is different from the in-game graphical issues that this thread is discussing, seems to me that the issues are not related.

I've got a different card then you, so different drivers, but thanks for the link.
Did you completely uninstall the device or just rollback the drivers then re-install the current drivers?

What were the actual steps you took in the device manager? Sorry if I'm asking you to be specific, I just tried alot of this kind of stuff to no avail, so It'd be helpful to hear exactly how you did it if it's not too much trouble! :)

in the device manager you can right click on your video card and select uninstall and there is a check box for "delete the driver software for this device" . i am using Windows Vista so it may be different for you

Quick update to the problem, if you are having this issue my fix was to download ATI Tray Tools, then find the option "Enable geometry instancing" or something like that, and make sure it's checked. Fixed th problem for me.

Found this info an different thread. It worked for me. But note if you are running Win 7 you'll need to do additional work to get ATI Tray tools installed as the driver is unsigned, so Win 7 says "BAD DRIVER!! NO BISCUIT!!"" (Or something like that :D)/ You'll need dseo13b http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=dseo
