My machine is rebooting after only a few minutes after launching the game. I was creating a new char.
I am able to run games like Dragon Age, **** for hours without problems so I don't think this is a hardware problem.
Here is the System, Display and Sound section of my DxDiag:

Same here my computer fully shuts down after anything from 5-20mins of play and can run most things on max settings with no issues.

My suggestions:

1. Check event logs and see if your system blue screened and rebooted to recover.
2. I didn't check your video driver version but it may need updating.
3. If you are shutting down that is almost always a heat issue, make sure you aren't overheatting.

Nothing in the log except a message after the reboot:"The previous system shutdown at 19:15:34 on ‎12.‎01.‎2010 was unexpected."
NVidia drivers are current, I downloaded then yesterday
I don't think this a heat issue as I can play Dragon age on max without problems for several hours

I've got a EV3A 750sli board with a Nvidia GTX260 (only 1 card so not running SLI)

I've been having the same problem, though it hasn't happened when i'm in Windowed mode.
With Max Window and Full screen the system would just click off after a couple of minutes.

Though its holding steady so far with the normal window mode.

Edit: Never mind, just did it in Window mode. It lasted longer though.

Guys, make sure you check your temperatures, for graphics card temperatures use GPU-Z and chose the option to log to file, it will then write to a file every second.

Now the original poster has a GTX 295 wich really is a cold card unless its a overclocked version. Also I noticed you use Core i7 CPU, have you made any modifications to your motherboards IOH cooling?
The IOH gets stupidly hot, Intel claims it's safe to 105C, just like NVidia claims their cards is safe to 105C. This is true when the temperature is 105C for a short period of time, for longer periods of time 95C is absolute maximum, anything above this will damage your hardware slowly.

Anyway, back to the IOH, what you can do is to remove the original heatsink device and put on a radiator from Thermalright, this reduce my own IOH temperature from 94C to 55C, wich really proves the heatsinks on these motherboards are all too small.

EDIT: I should add that Dragon Age doesnt produce any large amounts of heat, and **** makes a GTX 295 card increase 4-5C in temperature from idling, wich is cause **** is built to run on lower end systems so your card is a huge overkill in ****.

It might not be overheating might be blue screening for another reason

In my case it is the CPUs overheating.

Now to figure out how to fix the overheating problem.

There are a lot of thermal monitoring tools out there. RivaTuner seems popular.

There's somthing wrong with cryptic games, I tried out the CO 3 day trial thing, my fans were working overtime and quad core was almost 100% on my g15. Hoped it has somthing to do with using steam to run it. I ran conan on max settings no prob and it only used 1 core.

yeah CO was overing heating for me too. IDK why cryptic just ignores it. Their engine causes major overheating and they just act like its because their games are so great(they are kinda good) >_>

It might not be overheating might be blue screening for another reason

It is possible yes, but the Core i7 motherboards are known to have extremely weak heatsinks on the IOH.

But anyway, turn on BSOD so you can get some error codes, you can also use windebug to find many problems that might cause this error, but a WARNING, do not stress test drivers until its your only option left, and make sure you close and save all work you might be doing before stresstesting drivers as it will cause BSOD if any of the drivers have memory leaks.

Open the side of your case, get a small fan, open your window and blow 0 degree wind into your comp. just play like that thats what i do, i can play for a couple hours before my card overheats on me. to be fair my card has a overheating problem, but nothing like what Cryptic games cause. Crysis dont cause this much overheating for it.

Yea can run crysis fine aswell on max, yet CO crushed my system, I'm not at home untill tonight I only can assume that it will be even more intensive then CO. This really makes no sense, why do these games over-use resources, do they not put in a cap as to what to allow the game to use??

What's going to happen is im going to get flames coming out the backend of my PC, it's happened before...

The "better" a computer is the more likely it is to produce heat, and heat is your worst enemy and its alone the cause of 85% of the BSOD's on highend systems.
Check the temps first, use programs that can write log to file so you dont lose the information when the computer crash. If they look fine you can move on to reading the error code you get when it crash, and also check the "Probably Caused By" on the BSOD. It's not 100% certain it is caused by the file listed there, but it can give you a hint.

If you have Overclocked your CPU, you need to Disable Spread Spectrum in BIOS, otherwhise it will become very unstable.
Check your CPU's maximum temperatures here:

Intel: http://processorfinder.intel.com/
AMD: http://www.amdcompare.com

Also for the debugging part check this blog: http://blogs.technet.com/askperf/archive/2008/05/06/troubleshooting-server-hangs-part-two.aspx

In my case it is the CPUs overheating.

Now to figure out how to fix the overheating problem.

The only thing you really can do is to get another heatsink for your CPU. The bigger the heatsink is the better it will be at cooling your CPU. If you have overclocked it, clock it down again.

A temporary fix for your CPU overheating problem would be to clock it down abit until you get a better heatsink for it. If you are not allowed to install such things, hand it in to a company that is authorised to do so. Installing a large heatsink is not very easy, you need to remove everything from the chassi, and mount stuff on the back of your motherboard and then remount everything in the chassi again to finally install the big heatsink.

I uninstalled the nvidia drivers (195.62) and let windows installed old drivers (185.93) via windows update and I was able to play in windowed mode for a long time.
Concerning the hardware, this is an Alienware machine, the mobo is an Asus P6T Deluxe but I don't know what they put for heatsink but I didn't modify anything.
This is also no BSOD as the system stops and does not reboot immediately if there is one.

What chassis does people use that gets into trouble with CPU overheating?

Intel have a nice list of recommended chassis depending on the power consumption on the CPU, you can find it here: http://www.intel.com/reseller/chassis2009/index.htm

About the graphics drivers, the drivers from NVidia usually have memory leaks but gives great performance. The drivers you get from windows update is tested and confirmed to not have any memory leaks at all so they might be a better solution. And the 195.62 drivers gives me problem aswell, I use GTX 295 aswell, but I'm using the 190.62 drivers wich I know contains memory leaks, will probably do like you did and try the microsoft certified drivers.

you can buy an attachable laptop cooler, they are about 10$, that might solve the problem.

I wouldn't use Dragonage as a benchmark for whether things will be ok in STO. STO utilizes 100% of my GPU all the time where as Dragon age only uses about 80% of mine.

if you have an ATI card then you can use ATI tray tools to show the temps of the GPU on screen all the time so you can get an idea of the temps at crash time. I would say anything over 85c is pushing it and over 100c you are in burn out mode.

I agree that most system fails like you describe are mainly overheating but also check your chipset drivers and also your gfx drivers. If you are using Nvidia then I have seen it suggested to roll back to 190.xxx sorry don't do NV.

I have been able to play today in fullscreen mode without any reboots with the NVidia drivers 191.07 (dated 27.09.2009) installed via Windows update so there is problems with the drivers from NVidia site.
One thing I noticed is that there is only the driver and no PhysX drivers at all, so maybe the problem is the PhysX driver.

I'm starting to think it's safe to say that this is an overheating issue. Another computer in my house is now experiencing the same issue with the program running.

I've never had overheating problems with this system EVER, but I'm going to be running SpeedFan and logging what takes place just to make sure. I think I might also try different graphics settings that are either less demanding or take up less CPU power.

My specifications are as follows.

OS - Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
Mobo - AMD 790GX Chipset
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ (3.1GHz)
GPU - ATi Radeon HD 4850 512MB
RAM - 4GB RAM

Anyone responding with the same problem, please leave your system specs if you know them. Maybe we can get to the root of the problem and see how widespread this is...

I have downloaded speedfan and watched the temperatures. The temperatures recorded are lower then when im running three instances of world of ******** at once...yet WoW does not crash and burn my system. This game does...

Is it possible it is just bad coding...but then that brings us to why just some computers and not all...maybe if cryptic could find out the exact nature of the problem....they could give us a definitive answer to the problem.

At this point in time....Im probably gonna cancel my preorder, because paying for a game that does not run on my computer , when all other games do...is just not an option for me. Im not gonna pay for a game that cant be played.

I just did a test while running Crysis and the STO client.

While running Crysis I had a max CPU temperature of 40C and GPU temperature of 70C-80C. Now these are absolute max levels may I add.

While running the STO client I only made it as far as the character select screen, I had a max CPU temperature of 50C and GPU temperature of 100C. Both of these are danger zones.

Bug in the game engine? I don't know. I really hope this issue can be fixed so I can play this great Trek MMO.

After spending a half hour cleaning out absolutely all the dust I could find in my case and heatsink... the temperature decreased by about 5 Celsius while running the game. While this is now an acceptable temperature and it won't cause me to crash, it's still quite a bit more than the Crysis test... which boggles my mind.

I too am running Win7 and experiencing this problem... but only as of today. I was playing for many hours last night without a hitch. As of these latest patches, immediately upon the game loading past the Cryptic/Atari screens, my system restarts. No BSOD, no event viewer entry (except for the usual "that last shutdown wasn't expected, dude").

Just tested GPU temps while running the game. 61c - 63c, up until the moment of death. I'd say that's pretty damn safe.

Running Win7 x64, 3GB DDR2 RAM, Asus P5B mobo, GeForce 9800GTX+, Sound Blaster Audigy Pro Platinum 2 ZS, and I'll post my dxdiag/etc if anyone cares.

As an addendum, after some thought I realized that between the time I stopped playing last night, and the time I started playing today, the only changes that happened... were made by Cryptic by patching the game. My computer didn't install any updates, driver changes, new software, or anything, during that 20 hours of downtime (mostly because I was in bed, and then at work). I suspect a bug in the latest build.

Has anyone heard back from a ticket put in or Cyptic or an offical statement on this?
I have never heard of nor seen this type of error on any game I've ever played.
Needless to say having the same problem I am pretty disapointed in this game already and this is the type of crap that really sucks the fun outta a games launch.

mine has just started to have this problem, and it is most defiantly not a overheating issue.

I was having crashes in deepspace and FA missions, 100% of the time in fact i would crash within seconds of entering the zone, the error coming up was something to do with unable to read a file.
So i reinstalled, seamanly fixing this problem (can now run them fine) yet every 5-20 mins my comp resets even if im in locations were i spend hours before.

Edit: just like to point out Claytanic that while yes this is freaken annoying, the game has not yet launched . this is exactly the kind of think OB is for

I'm sorry, any game that is using at most 31% of my CPU's processing power shouldn't be causing ANYTHING to overheat.

It's using 80%-90% of BOTH of my cores and I'm running a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ (3.1GHz).

Absolutely crazy, no program has ever used that much before, and I play a lot of demanding games...
