"You cannot equip this item" .... why?

Check your XP lvl.
Some items are restricted to higher-tier lvls and ranks.

Actually, in both cases that I tried it "You cannot equip this weapon now" would be more appropriate - didn't get xp, but just flew into an empty system...

Find it helps to have the correct <Equipment Screen> open at the time you're attempting to Equip Items.

Even when you have one ship, and one empty science console it still thinks you might want to equip a Science Console on your Captain. Or something. :rolleyes:
