A higher stats in Deflector, Emitter and Sensors means that abilities that are effected by them more effective.
Such as higher skill levels in deflector will increase the effectiveness and possibly reduce cooldowns on Tachyon Beam.

Well, yeah, but it wouldn't hurt to have which of these a power was using in the power's own tool-tip; i.e. Does Tachyon Beam use emitters?

I just said that it does not. It uses deflectors. If you look in the skills it tells you what abilities it affects.
Go to this site and look through the skills: http://durakkenstudios.com/STOcharbuilder/index.html

It was a rhetorical question. I was trying to emphasize that one shouldn't have to go searching; it should be in the power's description itself.

All powers should indicate what catagory they fall in for skill-synergy-related purposes. So for example the engineering skills should clearly indicate if they're Emitters, Deflectors, or Sensors skills.

Seriously... I shouldn't have to alt-tab out of the game and come to the forums to look up this stuff. I still have no idea *precisely* what the deflector stat does for me - I have a deflector that adds to the stats for Sensors, Sensor Array *and* Deflector, and I really think I ought to be able to look this up in-game.
Methinks that the game needs an in-game HTML renderer like EVE has that allows us to browse pages internal to STO at least.

I'm hoping that in the future they will be improving the UI relating to many of the functions and systems in the game. For example: being able to scan enemies and analyze their type, loadout, etc. from a distance (effected by sensor ratings, etc.). There are many such ideas where the immersion would be improved, that would either access already existent data, or simple cosmetic changes (such as having a cutscene of your away team leaving the bridge to beam down (instead of a screenshot).

Unfortunately, being... well, cryptic about the hard numbers has been a hallmark of Cryptic.
Yes, I fully agree full documentation should be made available to players in game.
No, I don't expect that to happen any time soon.

I dont need hard numbers but a simple "This improves the effectiveness of X, Y, and Z" would be very helpful when learning what gear/equipment does what.
