View Full Version : What the hell is going on

I`ve been trying to get into this game since the headstart started.
First the log in server had an issue on STO, then Steam decided to throw a wobbly and have us Steam users download the entire game again.
Now I have finally downloaded the game, some 4 hours after "head start", when I click to start the game it says.. "This game is unavailable, please try another time".
WTF is going on?
Does anyone have the slightest idea why my game wont start?
I have pre order and lifetime - its all active on my account and I`am logging on with those correct details.
Thanks

You can't launch through Steam, it sees the patched client and thinks it's corrupted files then wipes the install and starts downloading again. You have to find where steam stuck the game (Program Files -> Steam -> steamapps -> common -> star trek online; if you used default settings) and use the Star Trek Online exe there.
If you tried to launch through Steam, you have no choice but to re-download, re-patch, then start using the direct exe (NOT Steam still, because it'll probably wipe it again).
Yay Steam.

Just download the regular installer, no reason to use the steam install. I dont like using that for MMOs since they tend to have launchers.

I moved the files from the steam folder, put them somewhere else and tried playing like that.
It just hangs and wont connect. Just says connecting to the account server, then times out.
I have been tinkering with this since the "headstart" started. I`am really fed up now tbh.

Yeah, Steam really took a dump on the parade route today. I won't do business with them again, this is unacceptable.
*fingers crossed this thing will work after the 10Gb DL*

Me too, lost a customer here also. Must have spent hundreds if not thousands on games via Steam in the past.
Never again

So, let me get this straight...By your own statement you've bought a lot of stuff through steam, but this one game having an issue launching via Steam, is causing you to never go back? With all the deals that they have on games all the time and especially during the holidays that's just insane.
Simple explanation...Steam sees what you had before as a Beta client, so now that the game has launched, it's patching in what it sees as the full retail client. It considers it no different than a pre-order demo versus a full game (like L4D2).

Wow, if people are having the Steam issues I have without ever having bought it from them - thats really bad indeed.
Go back to sleep

But mine is apparently just downloading the beta again. It still says beta in the games list, it's not half done yet though.

Yep thats right, never again.
I`d rather pay more from a decent company.
Edit:- Most places are usually cheaper than Steam. Its just the download market for us lazy sods that cant be bothered to go to the store where they have a decent selling point. I`ll be going to the store in future.

Id make a thread about this on the Steam forums.
I have downloaded several games from Steam with no problems though over the years , i sympathise with you on this issue.

If it wasnt so annoying it would be laughable. So steam hasnt even given me the right version after it redownloaded and repatched.
I`ve downloaded the regular version from STO site, I`am installing that now, see if that works.
By the way, its 13hrs 21 minutes since "headstart" started.
Still havent got to play it yet.

Avoid Steam. Terrible system, bugged to hell, constant problems with downloads and patches, money grabbing company behind it, and the list goes on. I use it only when absolutely forced to (Empire Total War, the fools), but given the choice I will always buy either a boxed copy or a key direct from the developer.

Hmmm, I had steam since the start, have many games and no problems at all with it, it has been solid for me over the years and there not exactly a money grabbing company when they could be charging for all the free TF2 content for the past year and more, but anyway..
STO, fair enough it's not working yet, but just run the launcher in the steamapps folder, it works fine just now and no need to re-download, it's just patching the latest one... (Run as administrator to be sure)
... I'll quote this if it doesn't work :)

Just in case there are people out there who`s Steam still wont let them play beacuse of wrong versions...
Either bypass Steam altogether..
( Download the client from the STO site and just add your subscription and edition codes )
I do this anyway now. Now I only have to worry about STO messing up, rather than them and Steam.
Or if you want to play it via Steam..
1. Load Steam
2. From the My Games tab, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game cache files (GCF's) - this process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.
I just got my reply from Steam yesterday with the answer, even though I submitted the ticket at launch.
I managed to sort mine ( day after launch ) by downloading the client via the STO site and then adding my deluxe edition codes etc via the STO account page.
Regards
Jim
