Ooh, fun.

My current ship is the U.S.S. Dark Frontier, a heavily modifier Sovereign class. Dark Frontier was the name of a two-parter episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Given the ships darker color scheme and heavy focus on combat, the name fit well.

Other ship names I've had:

U.S.S. Avalon - A streamlined Intrepid class.
U.S.S. Wyvern - Experimental Star Cruiser
U.S.S. Osiris - An old reliable Miranda-class variant.
U.S.S. Arcadia - A stock Akira-class vessel
U.S.S. Ragnarok - A hybrid Dervish/Maelstrom class.
U.S.S. Silent Wind - A personalized Nova-class.

Let's see... my science officer's ships:
USS Komorov
USS Michael Adams
USS Dobrovolski
USS Francis Scobee
USS Rick Husband
If you can't figure out the pattern you fail at space stuff.

My Pakled Tac appreciates strength in his cruisers:
USS Resilient
USS Enduring
USS Robust
USS Unyielding
USS Stalwart

My engineer/cruiser pilot goes more traditional for Fed cruisers, namely US Navy WW2 carriers, mostly escort class that were sunk during the war:
USS St. Lo
USS Bismarck Sea (A Connie and Connie refit)
USS Block Island (planned)
USS Wasp (planned)
USS Gambier Bay (planned)

I can't bring to mind the whole list atm, but my Tac/escort captain names her ships after battles.
Currently USS Goliad
USS Tsushima
USS Samar

For my main I made a character based off of my wife and used her middle name as the name of the ship. I did not use her name as the character but rather a mix of it and my character from LOTRO that was based on her (Mariwyn Zerimar)

For my second character (Ryan Scott) I used my name and based the character on me. I've named each ship after the cars I have owned in chronological order.

For my third character (Ryick Pa'tran) I named him after my character from SWG (pre-NGE) and named his ship after his nickname (the Blue Speedo).

For my fourth character I named him Thrawn (yes, from Star Wars), he is Captain of the Chimaera and his BOs are Pallaeon, Piett, Veers and Daala. Yes they are in uniform as well.

Naming my ships after pioneers of aerospace. Or, at least after names I remember because they have theory's or equations named after them.

Kutta-Jakowski equation is an easy way to calculate lift given velocity and circulation. Great for calculating curveballs.

Helmholtz is famous for fundamental principals of vortices.

The ships on my main are named after rivers.
USS Rubicon (T1 & T5)
USS Tiber (T2 & T4)
USS Amazon
USS Euphrates

Current ship is the USS Rubicon A, the name comes from the river near Rome that Caesar had to cross to enter the city. When the Senate learned of his intentions they instructed him to leave his army on the far bank or risk becoming an enemy of Rome. Caesar decided to bring his army with him and subsequently became Emperor.

Why did you pick it any real reason or was it just random post it here.

Mine was the USS Sentinel. Named after My old Lug Trek Ambassador Class Ship. captained that thing for 18 years before it got blown up by the Hur'Q. total roleplay nerd here.

Other ship is the USS Tantalus. Another Nod to a Star trek rpg i play. it was a Galaxy class.

To be honest...I actually picked up a dictionary/thesaurus and looked at words that went with my class (science/med, tactical, engineer).

I would write how I kept creating branches of words/ideas for each ship name theme that I did...but that would be long and boring :o :p ;)

In my captain's logs, I have detailed the story of the crew of the USS Visionary and its successor the USS Visionary-A. The first was a sovereign class starship, my second favorite looking ship in Trek-dom after the "All Good Things..." galaxy. Once I was able to get my favorite ship in-game, I indicated in the logs how the original was destroyed along with several of my crew members. Lt. Cmdr. Anrol (Bolian) I was close to, so it was difficult to lose her for me. Cmdr. Connelly (Human) I liked, but only kept him on as I was waiting for my Cardassian security chief. Tired of waiting, I customized a random alien into looking like a Cardassian and let him go with little regret.

Back on topic, the name is Visionary because I wanted to choose a somewhat general word that had a lot of meaning that could be conveyed in how it relates to the ideas behind Star Trek, much like the name Enterprise. I think of it mainly in its adjective sense as a thing that is characterized by vision and foresight, often prophetic.

On another side note, I consider myself a visionary in the noun sense, an idealist and a dreamer.

My main character is a Klingon (Fed Side) science officer. Her ships have all been NCC-92000 USS N'Hampsha all the way up to the current which is NCC-92000 E USS N'Hampsha. I live in New Hampshire, USA. I figured it sounded Klingon....:D.

My secondary character is a Fed (Human) Engineer who's ships are all named after US Presidents: NCC-93003 USS Washington, NCC-93004 USS Lincoln, NX-93005 (Excelsior Class, hence the NX disignation) USS Eisenhower, and his current NCC-93006 USS Roosevelt. I am not sure which president I will use for his RA ship yet, maybe Reagan... or Kennedy....don't know yet. I'll decide when he makes RA :)

My Klingon Engineer's ships are all named after mythological creatures and gods: IKS Chimera and IKS Dionysus. He is only an LC at the moment.

I just started a Klingon Tactical officer whose ships I will name using an english to Klingon translater on a website I found. His first ship is the IKS May' ej Bathl which is Klingon for glory and battle.

Wow, I've had several. My Tact Admiral mainly goes around in the Sovereign-class USS Nebuchadnezzar (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/ussnebuchadnezzar03.jpg), or the Prometheus-class USS Archangel. Named after the Babylon king (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebuchadnezzar) and archangels respectively. He started aboard the USS Atlanta (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/screenshot_2010-01-30-12-37-36.jpg), named after a city in Georgia, USA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta). Commanded two ships with just cool names: USS Interceptor (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/ussinterceptor01.jpg), and USS Spearhead (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/ussspearhead05.jpg) (Both escorts).

He also has an Intrepid-class science ship registered USS Via Domus (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/ussviadomus04.jpg). It is latin for "Way Home" and is named after the great journey home of the USS Voyager.

My science alt started on the USS Tesla (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/usstesla01.jpg), named after the scientist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla). She then moved to the Nova-class USS Endeavour (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/ussendeavour02.jpg) named after the tall ship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HM_Bark_Endeavour). She also commanded the Akira-class USS Korolev (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/usskorolev06.jpg), named after the Russian rocket scientist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergey_Korolyov) and the Excelsior-class USS Leicester (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/ussleicester03.jpg), named after the city in England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leicester). She then commanded a second USS Endeavour, Intrepid-class. And during special op missions she commands the Defiant-class USS Fenrir, named after the Norse Mythical Wolf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenrir).

She commanded some other ships: The TOS Constitution USS Barcelona (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/ussbarcelona01.jpg), named after the city in Spain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelona). The USS Charon, a runabout, named after Pluto's moon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charon_%28moon%29).

Lastly, I have a Klingon alt that commanded the IKS ghangwI' (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c338/thun712/Star%20Trek%20Online/iksghangwi01.jpg) which is (allegedly) Klingon for "Horizon"

Some updates to my old ship list:

My recent Advanced Tactical (refit): USS Kallisti

Why? This is the name (or rather the engraving on) of the Golden Apple of Eris, that most desired thing which wreaked so much havoc amongst the gods. The golden Apple was engraved "For the Fairest" and the gods themselves fought and squabbled over who it was meant for, much like the cloak ability here resulted in heated fighting for who this was intended. I felt it most fitting for the cloaking defiant refit.

After getting this, I realized I had no clue how to outfit it or fly it.

So, I rolled another liberated borg Klingon, Wampaq, making him look more like an albino Klingon than a borg. He was named after my old SWG bounty hunter, Wapma, a huge white wookie. His ship has been one Raptor after another, each named with the klingonization of Kashiik (the Wookie homeworld): qaSIyq. Kind of lame, I suppose. But I enjoy being reminded of the early days of that game, and Wampa was my first ever MMO character in that regard back in SWG closed beta and again at launch.

IKS Quv'voq'Dit (Honor in the Blood) Vo'qov Carrier/

USS Mary Rose, Excelsior. Named after the first carrack ever built which mounted her artillery on the sides of the ship, versus on the forecastle as was common in the early renaissance. Even though the idea of gun port covers were not considered, and the heavier guns were on the top causing intense rolling at sea, which lead to her flooding and sinking, she paved the way for Hawkin's new design of ship under Queen Elizabeth that would prove instrumental, in combination with the daring fire ship raid, and the weather, led England to victory over the Spanish Armada. A design that would propel nautical combat to the art form it became, and propelled England, and by extension, the United States to the maritime power that they both have become.

Retrofit Defiant: U.S.S. Meitou

The "Meitou" are a rare class of katana, meitou meaning "Celebrated Sword" or "Named Sword". They are prized swords passed through generations, won in battle, or given as a gift out of respect. Meitou are superior to ordinary katana in most aspects: cutting, endurance, etc. Meitou are more expensive, due to their quality; typically handmade by renowned sword-smiths, the Meitou gain their name through battle, long existence, and even royalty.

Considering when my Caitian reached Captian, he commanded a Defiant named the USS Katana, I thought Meitou seemed a fitting name for his newer defiant class vessel

I decided to do German words:

USS Shadenfreude - pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others (or "Ha Ha!").
USS Treppenwitz - staircase wit, thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late.
USS Zeitgeist - the spirit of the times
IKS Ver'Nicht - a "klingonized" version of the german word "to destroy", vernichten

For the Federation I was trying to keep with German words that represent an abstract idea and don't necessarily have a good corresponding English word. And for the Klingons I was going with hard consonent words related to violence, honor, and all that Klingon jazz.

I was very tempted to just do Schadenfreude-A,B, etc., but that seemd a bit boring.

So my main ship was an Assault Cruiser called the U.S.S. Absolution, which fits my entire Fleet's background of protecting the Federation from threats from all sides. It also has a hidden meaning since the definition of absolution is "1. The act of absolving or the state of being absolved. 2. The formal remission of sin imparted by a priest, as in the sacrament of penance." and what my Fleet has to do makes us break the ideology of the Federation to protect the ideology of the Federation (btw the new weekly episode has Drake using some of my words but I said 'em first... My Fleets been around since beta :P). So I'm sure that in the background I would want absolution of the sins we are forced to make.

Even though I love my ship, as a Tac Officer I want more boom and unfortunately an "assault cruiser" doesn't have enough boom (kinda funny) so I bought the Excelsior Retrofit, which gave me the ability to toss High Yield III at enemies and due to people joking about my name (which is based on the real world and not fantasy books) I called it the U.S.S. My main character is a human science officer (based on me, living it up in the 25th century) has commanded the following ships:

USS Magellan - Centaur/Miranda/Shirkahr hybrid. My first ship and it needed a name. I realised that the name I wanted could only be carried through each ship by putting -A or something unique on the end of it, so decided the 'hero name' I was after would be saved for later in the game. Magellan was a generic choice, based on the Portuguese explorer.

USS Enigma - Excalibur class (with Constitution neck & pylons). A name I had used in a previous Babylon 5 universe I had imagined. Based off of the coding device from WWII and the 20th century 'music project'.

USS Thunderbird - Akira/Oslo class hybrid. Based on the Gerry Anderson sci-fi series and also as one of the famous Akira class ships from First Contact was named Thunderchild (albeit from The War of the Worlds), I figured there could be a whole fleet of Akira type ships named based on the 'Thunder' theme including Thunderflash, Thunderstreak, Thunderchief, which also pays tribute to some awesome aircraft from Earth's 20th century.

USS Tempest - Galaxy class. Named after a storm, much like Typhoon and Hurricane. Another tribute back to a WWII fighter plane as well.

USS Conquest - Sovereign class. This is my ships 'hero name', finally realised on my favourite class of ship. Conquest does carry some connotations of war but I have always reasoned that the name was designed to be in an explorative context of Earth's conquest of the stars. Conquest comes from a Trek universe I had previously imagined, with the Conquest originally named Explorer.

For my new Caitian Tactical Officer:

USS Montana - Shirkahr class. The initial ship used in the STO Tutorial. Named after the launch site of the Phoenix and where First Contact took place in 2063.

USS Liberty - Constitution class. My characters story tells that he was born in the Mirror Universe in the 23rd century and through an anomaly was transported forward to the prime universe in 2408. The Liberty is my character's ship from the Mirror Universe which he retakes command of in 2409 :)

In the future as I level my Tactical Officer I've planned he'll command the Enigma (from above) and possibly the Tempest either in its normal Galaxy class or perhaps as a Dreadnought.

Cheers,

Dan

These are just a few that I've used on my 4 FED. Characters so far...

USS Schenectady
It's where I live, so I name all of my T-1 Light Cruisers this one.

USS Thunderbird
Because I loved that show as a kid and also because my Uncle was a pilot on the Air Force Thunderbird Team, stationed in Jersey many years ago

USS Galaxy Star
Just because I like the sound of it.

USS Star Dragon
Again,... Just because I like the sound of it.

USS Ticonderoga
It's a Fort here in NY State up near Canada.

USS Marco Polo
That's the name on my LRSV refit. It just seemed appropriate for a vessel that is supposed to be way out on the frontier of Federation space.

USS Jim Thorpe
This is what I named my Runabout, because it's fast and agile just like this guy was in every sport he competed in.

USS Dragonfly
I named my Research Science vessel this cause I used the bug-eye front end, and that's just what it looks like to me.

My one Klingon character is currently flying the "I.K.S. Mah'Duj Hegh" which roughly translates to:

" We Are, the Vessel of Death"

I'm about to use...

USS Serendipity
I'm working on a brand new FED Engineering Character with Cruiser's. I'm hoping that this one will give me better luck in getting rare drops when I get to my T-2 Connie. ;)

As someone who owns the updated Star Trek Encyclopedia, the Franz Joseph Starfleet Technical Manual, a copy of Ships of the Star Fleet 2290-2291, damn near every Trek novel published in the 1990s, and two bookcases full of 20th-century European history books, I am basically never short of decent names. The following are the ones I've used for my current sci Saurian character.

USS Tashkent, Shi'Kar class Light Cruiser

I always like to use names from Russian and Soviet history, and this one is named after the current capital of Uzbekistan (and former rest stop on the Silk Road).

USS Mantell, Nova class Science Vessel

A little joke on my part, the Mantell is named after the 19th century English geologist and paleontoligist Gideon Mantell, whose main claim to fame was discovering the dinosaur Iguanadon (cuz, you see, dinosaurs and Saurians, dur hur hur).

USS Brian Aldiss, Stargazer class Heavy Cruiser

I didn't really like the designs of the research science vessels, so I went with a heavy cruiser. The name's another joke on my part; most ships in Trek named after SF authors are named after American authors from the golden age of John W. Campbell and the pulps, so I thought it'd be kinda funny to name a ship after someone from the British New Wave, particularly someone who wasn't a fan of TOS back when it was originally airing. Thankfully, Aldiss is a kickass author, so I can forgive him his human failings.

USS Pathfinder, Intrepid class Long Range Science Vessel

This is a shout-out to the USS Pathfinder that appeared in the Shatnerverse novel Preserver. (Yes, I read the Shatnerverse. I know it's basically Kirk****, but there are some cool ideas hidden away in those books.) It seemed like a great name for an Intrepid class ship.

USS Marignano, Oracle class Deep Space Science Vessel

My pride and joy, this ship is a reference to a ship in the awesome TNG novel Intellivore that had the sort of backstory you'd expect a DSSV to have; lots of time out on its own, wandering through the cosmos exploring stuff, but with enough engine and weapon power to look after itself.

USS Thuban, Polaris class Reconnaissance Science Vessel

I'd originally named this ship the Iapetus, after the moon of Saturn, before deciding to redo the hull into a Polaris class one. Since the Luna class went with a lunar naming theme, I figured that the Polaris class used a stellar naming theme. After a quick trawl through Wikipedia star name list, I chose "Thuban" after discovering it translates from Arabic into "snake" (reptiles hurr durr). A few days later, a little further research reminded me that Thuban is a star in the constellation Draco that, thanks to galactic evolution, actually was the North Star about half a million years ago. Totally unintentional, but I really like the name.

USS Pathfinder II, Intrepid class Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit

What can I say? I really like the name. It's also a memorial to the original Pathfinder from Preserver, which came to a tragic end after body-slamming the planet Halkan.

It's a long story.

USS Kronstadt, Sovereign/Imperial hybrid class Assault Cruiser

Part of my lamentable attempts to fit out a cruiser to handle combat in B'Tran, this one's named after the famous Russian naval base in the Baltic. It's basically a Sovereign hull with the Imperial neck pod sticking out where the main shuttlebay was. Depending on my mood, I say it's part of an prototype ECM system that was never widely implemented in the fleet, or it's the Federation's biggest heat sink (on the plus side, the ship's holodecks can run Crysis at 60 FPS).

Decided to go for my federation fleet ships, all ladies names, mostly from greek mythology, and always ending in "a", except for my escort....

USS ATHENA = goddess of wisdom and war
USS CORTANA = cool blue AI from Halo
USS HERA = mother of the gods, wife of Zeus
USS AGATHA = Patron saint of my Church
USS PANDORA= in greek mythology, the first woman created, with her box of bad stuff in it, except for "hope"
USS ANNA = after my grandma
USS DEFENDER = obvious

since I am part of a mirror universe fleet, I have some spare ships for that, with appropiate paint jobs...(generally what I imagine the mirror verse to be like, is "the Clans, and their ways" from the battletech /mechwarrior universe....

ISS Turkina's Pryde = Flagship of Clan Jade Falcon, capital ship of the 3rd Falcon Talon Cluster
ISS Falcon's Prey = again themed after Clan Jade Falcon, but instead of 3067ad, its in dark age 3143ad....

ISS Marthe Pryde (under construction) = the best Falcon leader, in my book

My Excelsior Class Ship is the U.S.S. Miyaneko (NCC-407000-B) named after Miyaneko Gato from the webcomic "Angel Moxie". It was to be NCC-407-B, but the number limiter scratched that idea.

There's also a little back story to why this is the Miyaneko-B

The first one (NCC-407000) was an Oberth Class ship destroyed by a Klingon vessle. Miyaneko-A was a Constitution class that made it to decomissioning. Before she was retired however, the Miyaneko-B was constructed and for her test run round the solar system, was escorted by her predesesor.

All Miyaneko's have been captined by someone in my characters family.

My other ships are: red means decommisioned.

Najiko= Japanese for "son of the rainbow" i think. I promices a friend I would name my first ship this.
Seto= after my Fav. Yu-Gi-Oh character.
Ponyo= after a Myazaki character
Howl= same as Ponyo
Totoro= same as Howl
Cave Story= after a freeware PC game
Jenifer Wakemin (Original, A, B)= after the main character of "My Life as a Teenage Robot" (this is my escorts name)
Edmund Fitzgerald= after the sunken ship

I have a hard time coming up with good ship names, On some I settled for the names because I coulden't come up with better ones..

Tier 3 Akira Class - USS Tomahawk (In the Decipher RPG this class had a Native American tribe naming convention)
Tier 4 Defiant Class - USS Katana (I had a Defiant by the same name in SFC3 that I had great fun with)

USS Damascus on the road to Damascus where Paul found Christ.

grrrrr, people stealing my ideas! :( :p

My ship names are often series. My primary character was originally planned as a 'get to high level and use to fund the toons you really want to play' so fitting with a pseudo-Messianic lifespan. But I actually like playing her so changes need to be made. Her ships are named after important locations in the life of arguably the world's famous sacrificial lamb.

USS Gethsemane - as in 'Garden of' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_of_Gethsemane)
USS Calvary - traditional acknowledgement of the cruxifixion (it's actually Golgotha but, whatever)
USS Galilee - where Jesus found the first bridge officers.....errr, disciples
USS Nazareth - hometown
USS Damascus - as quoted above (though I wonder if Christ was lost since Saul "found" Him)
USS Judea - Romanized version of the name of the area Jesus was born in. Kinda like a state in today's parlance (Bethlehem of Judea). I chose the Romanized version because the actual name (Judah) is the name of a tribe and I wanted to make the distinction. I'm the son of a theologian. Sue me. :p

My tactical alt names her ships after prominent warriors in Earth history (Earth due to the influence of Tarania plus the fact that she doesn't feel comfortable using Vulcan warriors for non-Vulcan ships):

USS Boadicea - now known as Boudica (I used the name from the Enya song :p), queen of a British tribe who revolted against Roman occupation
USS Zenobia - Syrian queen who revolted against Roman occupation
(future ship) USS Artemisia I - ruler of the Ionians and the only female commander of King Xerxes (yes, that King Xerxes) and commanded five ships in the Battle of Salamis)
(future ship) USS Fu Hao - King Wu Ding of the Shang dynasty's "problem solver" and the only female military general in China at the time. The ambush of the Ba that she designed and commanded was a thing of beauty.
(future ship) USS Ahhotep - one of the most influential figures in the founding of Egypt's 18th dynasty. She was such a fierce and capable warrior that her sons put weapons and items celebrating her prowess in their own tombs (kinda like a 'look how badass my mom was').
(future ship) USS Tamar - Georgian Queen who built the Trebizond Empire commanding her army

Pretty easy to think of ship names for me when I have a theme to work off of.

My ship is a refit of a past Tactical Escort ship that was destroyed in battle, that is why I added `reborn` in this version. The name Sinistar comes from a horrifying old arcade game that scared the bejesus out of me as a child.

In the Sinistar game you would pilot a spacecraft gathering the only object capable of damaging Sinistar.

While doing so you would get taughted by the menacing voice of Sinistar untill he appeared, chased down your ship and eats it.

No one stands a chance against Sinistar. It is a giant spacecraft eating skull thing that cannot be stopped. It constantly hungers for more, and destroys all in its path.

I tend to try to come up with cool, but original names. If not, I just go with cool.

USS Alent <- originated from Ebon Scape, the game I'm designing.
USS Legacy <- A really bad a$$ T5 escort with what I thought to be a bad a$$ name.
USS Ebon Scape <- again, named after the game I'm designing.

USS Blue Horizon <- As original as I could think really. It was for a T3 cruiser in OB... I really liked that T3 Cruiser, and I have to admit, I hate the T4 and T5 Cruisers. They can't turn worth crap, it's really hard for me to get some good shots off... I guess that's why I switched to Escorts, different play styles... But I really loved that T3 Cruiser I built in OB, I don't think I'll ever forget it.

USS Phoenix <- A little corny, but I still liked the name. Used it for a dinky T1 ship.
USS Peregrine <- I didn't know there was an actual class until the ship naming contest, still, I liked the name and I used it for my T1 ship after OB.

USS Nova <- It's what I'm planing on using for my next ship, I'm going for Science and trying out that style until season 3.

U.S.S. Euphemia-Tactical Cruiser, named after my Grandmother

U.S.S. Arturia-Currently an Intrepid. I wanted to do something that had an Arthurian influence but I figurd someone was already flying the U.S.S. Gewnevyre.

Let's see...my current roster:

Inrale: USS Stephen Hawking and USS Claudius Ptolemy. Hawking because I respect the man's work and Ptolemy because he gets a bum rap all too often because of his geocentric view of the universe, but at the time he did his work, he used the math and science available to him. Also, his navigational tables were so accurate and so well done that they were using them well into the seventeeth century.

Lucretzia: USS Stiletto--Rapier class ship, so I named it after a blade and it fits the way Lucretzia likes to fight--dirty.

Talana: USS Yorktown--a Connie refit, so I gave a classic ship a classic name.

I've had quite a few since I started:

- USS Princeton (Shi'Kahr class) - my uncle served on the carrier USS Princeton during the Korean War
- USS Ranger (Excalibur class) - after John Paul Jones' original frigate and two carriers (CV 4 and CV 61)
- USS Independence (Constitution class) - wanted to choose a name that evoked the Connies from TOS but didn't want to duplicate one already out there
- USS Scimitar (Akira class) - I used to participate in the online RPG "Star Trek: A Call To Duty" and was posted on the USS Scimitar, an Akira (I chose my primary character name in honor of my ACTD name)
- USS Antares (Nova class) - followed the stellar phenomena naming convention (Nova, Equinox, etc.)
- USS Copenhagen (Excelsior class) - some of the TNG Excelsiors were named after major world cities (Cairo, Melbourne)
- USS Endeavour (Galaxy class) and USS Discovery (Intrepid class) - went with the Space Shuttle theme
- USS Hornet (Defiant class) - in addition to being a historic US Navy name (CV 8, CV 12), it fits the Defiant's aggressive nature
- USS Apollo (Hermes class) - Greek mythological ties
- USS Europa (Luna class) - Europa is one of the moons of Jupiter (similar to USS Titan of ST: Nemesis fame)
- USS Constellation (Sovereign class) - not only a famed US Navy name, but I just happened to be watching "The Doomsday Machine"
- USS Triton (Prometheus class) - again, Greek mythology
- USS Warrior (Avenger class) - the name of the Royal Navy's first steel-hulled ship (HMS Warrior)

...whew. Sorry for the lengthy post...

Well, my first few ships were all named after cats...
U.S.S. Mau - Light Cruiser - Named for the Egyptian Mau
U.S.S. Caracal - Light Escort
U.S.S. Serval - Heavy Escort
U.S.S. Lynx - Tactical Escort

My current ship is the U.S.S. Pakhet, a fleet escort. Pakhet was the central egyptian name for the cat goddess, who was known in northern egypt by the name Sekhmet, and in southern egypt by the name Bast or Bastet (though, technically, those are all modern day pronunciations, the 'et' suffix was added to denote a feminine subject, the actual spellings are more along the lines of Pakt and Bes/Bas, I'm not sure what the spelling for Sekhmet is supposed to be though). Sekhmet in Northern Egypt took on the more aggressive properties of a lioness, and was known as a goddess of war. Bastet in Southern Egypt had the features of a domestic cat, and was a gentle goddess of joy, music, and fertility (sometimes referred to as the goddess of sex, drugs, and rock&roll). Pakhet, in the middle, was a hybrid of the two, represented by the egyptian desert wildcat and a protector of the people.

My character's name, Telbasta, is a variation of Tell Basta or Tell Bastet, the ancient egyptian name for what was later named Bubastis by greek explorers. It is a city, or rather was a city/location, in egypt where the temple of Bast was located - and only a short distance from that temple are a series of underground tombs where mummified cats were buried, thousands of which have been excavated. If it wasnt obvious, my character also happens to be a Caitian =P

I also have an advanced escort I occasionally fly named the U.S.S. Bubastis, after the city detailed above, and a Danube Runabout named the U.S.S. Tigris (which follows the standard naming conventions of runabouts, being a river, but also relates to felines).

The first of my ships that I'll address is on my joined trill science captain Jaz, she commands the USS Salvation. Interesting enough this is the original name it was assigned but as I had her planned to be a healer the name fit so I kept it.

My next captain is Trag, human engineer who commands the USS Pernicious, an advance escort. The name means destroy and that is what I did with him is destroy tge enemy.

Tragamite is a liberated Borg tac captain who commands the USS Novocaine. I generated this actually as a song title by Bon Jovi and the fact that dentist use this to numb you as they make holes in your teeth. I felt it was a fitting name for a fleet escort that makes short work of shields finishing the job at hand before you have time to feel the pain of what just happened.

Lana is a Klingon tac captain commanding the USS Enterprize(s). She has in her ship inventory the NX,TOS, Connie, makeshift Ambassador, galaxy X, sovereign and galaxy retrofit. I couldn't help but have one character with the epic liniage that IS Star Trek.

That is it for my VA now my LTGs

Ria an Orion tac captain commands a Hegh'ta BoP named IKS Kov'Koht. Since I don't actually know any Klingon or have a translator dictionary I just went with the name I was given.

Tak'Rahn of Borg science captain of the IKS IwIlj Jachjaj. I don't actually remember the translation but I was going for something along the lines of "big mama is a killer" for my Vo'Quv carrier.

An observer in the penumbra experiences a partial eclipse. USS Forlorn Hope - Heavy Cruiser - A Nepoleonic term for the first wave in an attack on a well defended position. Basically a suicide mission.
USS Warspite - Assault cruiser - Named after a British battleship that served in WW1 & WW2
USS Inquisitor - Cruiser retrofit - Mainly from the Warhammer 40k universe, but everyone is terrified of the inquisition.

USS Georgia - I've named my septum piercing georgia and it was the first name to come to mind that sounded shiplike

USS Shrike - I got my wildlife book from the kitchen and opened it on a random page. All the birds on the page I opened were different shrikes. The character this ship belongs to is called Henriette Aecellus - Henriette because that's the name of one of my ear rim piercings (only two of my seven piercings have names though), Aecellus because when I opened the wildlife book to find her surname it opened on the common woodlouse - Oniscus acellus. I liked the sound of acellus but changed it so it looked nicer. So I made it look nicer and so it sounded more like Aeschylus but not as harsh (because I'm an ancient history freak).

U.S.S. Phalanx (Galaxy Refit), for a defensive military formation used by the Greeks
U.S.S. Resnik (Delta Flyer), for Judith Resnik, an astronaut who died in the Challenger explosion.

I think I may have participated in this thread a long time ago. However, I have some new ships since then.

U.S.S. Lafayette (Noble Class) for General Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette (French General that participated in the American Revolution)
U.S.S. Norseman (Envoy CLass) for the people of Scandanavia (Vikings).
U.S.S. Missouri (Stargazer Class) for the state.
U.S.S. Truman (Excalibur Class) for the 33rd President of the United States.
U.S.S. Praetorian (Miranda Class)--a guard of a Roman Emporer.

I have other ships, but these are the ones I put the most thought into. For my Klingon ships, I usually take a name the random name generator gives me. I've tried looking some of them up, but I haven't found translations for many.

Seeing as though my Character was a refuge Bajoran Minner who worked the Kimberley's, it fitted into his bio. For my runabout I have Bandit. From Smokey and the Bandit. My defiant is called the USS Phantom from the comic book series and my other Sci vessel is called the USS Chaplain. After Charlie Chaplan.

I won't go into Thors ships, because you may as well look up Stargate ship names. Just named my runabout the X-302.
And my Klingon Alt ship names are all after Australian Female named cities. Currently IKS Adelaide I think.

USS Beagle - a science vessel named after Darwin's ship

USS Oppenheimer - my sci officer's advanced escort, named after atomic bomb designer

Awesome. Always nice to see other Outlaw Star fans about. I've seen a few Gene Starwinds running around, always makes me smile.

Same here. I ended up liking Cowboy Bebop as well, but Outlaw Star will always be my favorite of the two.

Well, as you might expect I have a ship based on an Anime as well, however, I'll start with my main:

I first started role playing with Dungeons and Dragons, and created a main character named Brandon Dragoncove. When I played Earth and Beyond a few years back, I created Dragoncove as my main character. I pictured him as a Han Solo kind of rogue, the kind of guy who pieced his ship together with duct tape and baling wire, and knew people that "nice people" don't normally associate with. As my Captain in STO he's essentially the same, my bio tells about how he had been arrested by Star Fleet and was on his way back to a starbase for trial when his ship got involved in the Borg attack on the Khitomer.

As my main Captain, his name is Brynden Dragoncove, and he has two main ships and his shuttle, now:

U.S.S. Glimithar - Heavy Cruiser - Brandon's primary weapon in D&D was a battle axe named Glimithar. His ship in E&B was named Glimithar as well, and vaguely axe-shaped, with a notched, saucer-shaped hull and cargo pods coming out the back. (It was a Terran Trader ship) In STO I tried to keep the notched look, with the warp nacelles stagged so they look like Dragoncove just threw them together.

U.S.S. Zayra - Advanced Escort - Zayra was a small dragon that Brandon had as a pet. Named after the Masterharper's fire lizard Zair in the Pern series. I tried to make the Zayra look like a dragon, with the triangular hull instead of the round one, and the little spars underneath it to look like claws.

U.S.S. Donford - Type 8 Shuttle - This is the Glimithar's shuttle, so it has the Glimithar's registration number with "-a" tacked on since they game currently doesn't let you use "-1" (Hopefully they will soon) Donford and Tarkin were Brandon's mules, and I will probably get a Runabout and call it Tarkin. Or perhaps a Captain's Yacht.

My secondary Captain is based on the Anime Plastic Little. Her first name is Tita, but I called her Tita Readman after Read or Die as well. Many of her references are crossovers between the two, although the ships are all currently named after Plastic Little characters.

My crews actually cross over with each other, and I consider them all the same crew, just with four ships instead of two. Tita is on Dragoncove's crew, and Dragoncove is on Tita's. It's just the Engineer tends to take over command of the Cruisers, while the Science Officer takes over on the Science Ships. :D

U.S.S. Cha Cha Maru - Long Range Science Vessel. - Eventually, I plan on this being a Deep Space Science Vessel. The original Cha Cha Maru was much taller than it was wide, and the DSSV seems to be the closest to that. I'm using the LRSV with the spars extending down from the engines, and I may keep this ship under a different name. Tita's first Science Vessel was named Cha Cha Maru too, but I ended up renaming it, below. I'm also not going with the "-A -B" convention, I don't want to bother with that. I'm just pretending it's the same ship. :D

U.S.S. Balboa - Heavy Escort - Tita's weapons expert on the Cha Cha Maru was named Balboa, so I went with that name for the ship. It's based on the shuttlepod for the Cha Cha Maru, but that didn't actually have a name. So I went with the guy who usually piloted it.

U.S.S. Junior - Science Vessel - The little first science ship Tita got was so cute I couldn't stand to delete it, so I ended up keeping it. The name is actually from Read or Die, although it refers to the character from Xenosaga as well.

U.S.S. Nichol - Type 8 Shuttle - Nichol was Tita's pilot and would-be boyfriend. :D I thought it was perfect for the little shuttle, plus I have a comic where is says that he is a racer, too. So I will probably replace it with the Delta Flyer eventually.

My Klingon Captain, Blayyde, is an Orion, and not exactly loyal to the KDF. So far, though, all of her ship names have been randomly generated. So nothing interesting there.

I recently created a Catian character that I'm just starting out. I actually got her a Runabout right away, since I wanted to go through the Lt levels in it. So I paid the full 300,000 energy credits, back before the new mission came out. The character's name is M'Gwaine, and she's based on a D&D character like Dragoncove. In STO, she is the sister of one of Dragoncove's crew, another Caitian named N'Gus. N'Gus kind of fell in with the wrong crowd, until Dragoncove rescued him, and M'Gwaine has been looking for him.

U.S.S. Crystal - Runabout - Morgwaine, the D&D character M'Gwaine is based on, had a crystal sword.

U.S.S. Catspaw - TOS Constitution - I wanted to play this, but I'm going to wait until I get out of the Lt levels to use it, again, for more of a challenge. I named it Catspaw after the TOS episode, and the fact that its captain is a cat, of course.

Like Tita, M'Gwaine is intended to be part of Dragoncove's crew, and will be once I can have Caitians as bridge crew. Right now, N'Gus is an Alien, but I want him to be a "true" Catian too, of course. Blayyde will probably also be joining Tita's crew as a diplomatic transfer.

And of course, I'm all ready to do the Vault mission on her, since I already have the shuttle. So I don't need to come up with a third name for it. :D

Addenda:

USS Iapetus, Luna class Reconnaissance Science Vessel

Formerly the USS Thuban, I changed the name back to Iapetus after I noticed some texture problems with the paint schemes on the Polaris hull parts. Thankfully, the Luna parts don't have this problem.

USS Harrisburg, Excelsoir class Heavy Cruiser Retrofit

I bought this on a whim a while back, but I've since refurbished it and use it primarily for my daily emblem grind. I named it after a city in Pennsylvania I rode through once during a trip to Washington DC; it seemed like a nice enough place. It was kind of hard to come up with a good name for this one; I'd originally named it the USS Righteous after the ship in the old Star Trek: Borg FMV game, but I decided I wanted a more modest name. Since Excelsiors seem to be usually named after either old Constitution-class ships or places/figures from American history, I figured "Harrisburg" was a fairly appropriate choice. Ever since the Harrisburg came along, the Krondstadt's spent a lot of time in spacedock.

USS Proxima, Nebula class Advanced Research Science Vessel Retrofit

I got the Nebula mostly out of a completist's desire; I still haven't decided how I should use it in my fleet. I named it the Proxima after a canon ship; I think it was one of the ships the Dominion blew up in the Gamma Quadrant at the end of season 2 of DS9. It's a nice sciency name, though if I ever get around to getting some Borg tech I may change its name to USS Douglass, after an assimilated Nebula class ship from Star Trek: Armada 2. Well, that or USS Tonawanda...or USS Caddebostan. I may change my mind later.

USS Pechora, Danube class Runabout

Yes, the runabout I bought about two weeks before the price drop. I stuck with the naming scheme from the series; this one is named after a big ol' river in the Russian Arctic.

Hammersmith, Type-8 Shuttlecraft

The shuttle I got during the Vault daily; in-universe attached to the Marignano. Named it after a bourough of London, haven't touched it since I got it. I like my runabout better anyway.

I think I may have posted way, way, way upthread; but I've added some ships since then and characters as well. I'll try to write this in a sort of formal tone simply because that way I can copy-paste it to a text file to keep track of things. It might sound more stuck-up than intended because of that; but this way I can stay organized for a change. (I've been meaning to do this for ages, this is a good excuse.)

================================================== ==================================

And that's it. Every single ship any of my characters still have. Some haven't done The Vault yet, hence the lack of shuttles on several. Hope you enjoyed that as much as I did typing it. Now for the copy-pasta.

================================================== ==================================

1. Characters with 1 at their rank indicate they're leveled to VA1, but that I prefer to use a lesser rank as my official rank for RP purposes.

2. Avellen is... not just one person. She's a group of psychically linked clones that are somewhere between one collective entity and linked individuals. Starfleet wasn't entirely sure how to handle it at first and just settled on 'Special Commander' as a collective rank for the entire group. Given that they crew the entire ship, it works out.

3. Mao in this context being the name of a species, which itself is named after the Chinese word for "cat". Just so you don't get the wrong idea. Klingon side.

4. Long, long story... Amazonian Orion Pirates; yes it's weird, but it's fun too, so I ran with it.

5. This is castling. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castling)

U.S.S. Andalusia (escort) - named for the region in Spain

U.S.S. Madrid (heavy escort) - named for the capital city

U.S.S. Manzanares (runabout) - named for a river running through the capital city

U.S.S. Alcazar (advanced escort) - named for the Alcázar Réal, former royal palace in Madrid (no longer existing)

U.S.S. Olivares (fleet escort) - named for Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares

U.S.S. Guadalmedina (tactical escort retrofit) - named for the character Álvaro Luis Gonzaga de la Marca y Álvarez of Sidonia, Count of Guadalmedina from the Captain Alatriste novels of Arturo Pérez-Reverte (honestly, most of these ship names got picked directly or indirectly from those works)

U.S.S. Asturias (assault cruiser) - named for the Pr*ncipe de Asturias, traditional title of the heir to the Spanish throne as well as the current flagship of the Spanish navy. I was slightly miffed that "Pr*ncipe de Asturias" contains too many letters and I was forced to shorten it.

My joined Trill engineering captain's ships are all named for ships associated with the career of a famous fictional Royal Navy officer. So far he has commanded the U.S.S. Hotspur, U.S.S. Atropos, U.S.S. Phoebe, U.S.S Lydia, and U.S.S. Sutherland. The sovvie will be the U.S.S. Nonsuch...

Currently, I'm flying a Galaxy. USS Brava. It's a reference to the old Horizons attraction at Epcot Center. The name of one of the locations on the ride was Brava Centauri, a space station. So as a tribute to one of my all-time favorite rides, I chose to call my Galaxy Brava! And I just really love the sound of it, too.

I'll put down a few ship names of mine, commanded by a few characters of mine...

For my main tactical captain I choose:
U.S.S. Si Long, Defiant/Gallant/Vigilant hybrid class Tactical Escort Retrofit

The true origin of this name is lost to me, but part of the name means "Dragon" in Mandarian Chinese. Originally I was trying to look up articles pertaining to Chinese mythological beasts, while I was getting the Tactical Escort Retrofit.
U.S.S. Huang Long, Defiant class Tactical Escort

This name I choose as one of the beasts in the Four Symbols in Chinese mythology (representing the center element). This name I really liked best out of the names I used for my ships.

U.S.S. Liu Bei, Akira/Oslo/Zephyr hybrid class Heavy Escort

I named this heavy hitter of an escort after a wise military general, Liu Bei, made famous in the" Romance of the Three Kingdoms" historical novel.

U.S.S. Guan Yu, Ushann class Escort

I named this Escort after a legendary Chinese halbred-wielding general, Guan Yu, made famous in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" historical novel.

U.S.S. Sun Ce, Shi'Kahr/Centaur hybrid class Light Cruiser

This was the very first ship I used when Star Trek Online launched. I named this ship after a tragic general of the Three Kingdoms (late Han Dynasty) period of China. The name means "Little Conquerer", which I thought was fitting due the game's release at the time. Sadly, I never kept the ship.

U.S.S. Two Qiaos, Danube class Runabout

I choose this name after the two sisters of the Three Kingdoms period of China, however, their given names remains historically unrecorded. The Elder and Younger Qiao sisters were married to Sun Ce and Zhou Lu respectively.

For my main science captain I choose:
U.S.S. Microburst, Nebula/Magellan hybrid class Advanced Research Science Vessel Retrofit

This pelicular name I got after reading some weather-related articles. I was going for some wind-related weather hazards for several science ships.

U.S.S. Cyclone, Intrepid/Discovery hybrid class Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit

I choose this name after a weather pattern. I found it a little odd naming after "Cyclone", but I kept the name anyway.

U.S.S. Stormfire, Luna/Polaris hybrid class Reconnaissance Science Vessel

This name was inspired by "a combination of Earth's weather patterns and the burning flame of humanity", so to speak...

For my main engineering captain I choose:
U.S.S. Yagyu, Celestial/Galaxy hybrid class Exploration Cruiser Retrofit

I named this ship after a famous historical and romanticized samurai of Japan's feudal era, Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi. I choose this name because I wanted to have a "samurai" feel to it.

U.S.S. Kiryu, Excelsior Refit hybrid class Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit

This name's meaning can be translated as "Metal Dragon" in Japanese, and is also the name of a Japanese city in the Gunma Prefecture of Kanto Region in Japan.

U.S.S. Miyamoto, Sovereign class Assault Cruiser

This ship is named after a famous Japanese swordsman and samurai, Miyamoto Musashi. He is famous for his duels, especially of his famous duel with Japanese swordsman Sasaki Kojirou, and stories of swordsmanship. Miyamoto is the author of "The Book of the Five Rings" and is the founder of the Niten Ichi-ryu style of swordsmanship.

Aside from the Danube Class Runabout, most of my ships are named after neighborhoods or streets in the San Fernando Valley. The rest are because I felt like it.

USS Laurel Canyon (Excelsior Class refit) after the Blvd

USS Northridge (Nebula Class refit) after the neighborhood and the California State University I attended. That and a lot of Star Trek TV and the latest movie filmed there. Out library is the Starfleet command building Kirk and McCoy walk down the stairs of. Yay! You might find me in that scene if you know what I look like...

USS Sherman Oaks (Vesper Class cruiser) is after the neighborhood I live in.

USS Van Nuys (Galaxy Class refit) is after the other neighborhood I lived in.

USS Santa Monica (Intrepid Class refit) is after the city I worked in and liked the most.

USS Manila Bay (Sovereign Class cruiser) is after the city I was born in.

USS Kongo (Constitution Class light cruiser) is after a reference to ST:VI

USS Starfire (Prometheus class escort) is because it sounded cool.

USS Balacan (Danube Class runabout) is named for a river in the Philippines.

My vessels are as follows:

USS Valkyrie: Assault Cruiser
USS Midgard: Long range science vessel refit
USS Valhalla: Tactical Escort Refit
USS Mjolnir: Advanced Escort
USS Beowulf: Delta Flyer
USS Amora: Type 8 shuttle craft

My vessels are all named after elements from Norse Mythology (on tribble I have the USS Gungnir, named for the spear of Odin). I am something of an amateur authority on Norse Myths and legends so I thought it fitting to name my vessels after them.

Some of the names I've picked (I'm not sure if I've posted in this thread yet, but here goes):

With my tac VA:

Tier 1
- U.S.S. Adelbert Ames NCC-103135/103135-A (Shi'Kahr hull, Miranda nacelles and rollbar, Centaur pylons): Named for a Civil War general who lived in the town I live in, and is buried right up the street from my house. I actually used the A when I was in beta, and the no-letter version in live.

Tier 2
-U.S.S. Benjamin Butler NCC-110518 (Constitution saucer, Excalibur nacelles and hull, Vesper neck and pylons): Another Civil War general who lived in this area, and is also buried up the street (Ames was his son-in-law).
-U.S.S. Admiral Tennant NCC-121890 (Mish-mash of the Rapier and Ushaan, I forget the combo exactly): Named for Sir William Tennant, a British officer during WWII.

Tier 3
-U.S.S. Adelbert Ames NCC-103135-B (Unmodified Akira): See above.

Tier 4
-U.S.S. Lowell NCC-311826 (Unmodified Galaxy): The city I live in.
-U.S.S. Argent Dawn NCC-112404 (Unmodified Defiant): Named for the organization in World of ********.

Tier 5
-U.S.S. Adelbert Ames NCC-103135-C (Unmodified Prometheus): Later scrapped this when I got the retrofit escort.
-U.S.S. Argent Crusade NX-111408 (Unmodified Defiant Retrofit): The "upgraded" Argent Dawn, so to speak.
-U.S.S. Lowell NX-311826 (Galaxy Dreadnought): Decided to give the old girl a "refit". *grin*
-U.S.S. Benjamin Butler NX-110518-A (Unmodified Excelsior Retrofit, Original Configuration): Figured it was a natural progression from the Constitutions.
-U.S.S. Adelbert Ames NCC-103135-D (Unmodified Galaxy Retrofit): You notice a theme here?

Now with my KE officer, General Devaneaux, the progression was simpler, lol:

-IKS Devaneaux's Fury (Unmodified B'Rel): Starter ship. I also have this as the retrofit.
-IKS VeS'puq (Somraw Raptor): "Warchild". This became the name of my shuttle.
-IKS Hovpuq (K't'inga): "Star child", referring to the Gorak'nar race that I created, and was able to give some kind of form in STO. Both Underwood and Devaneaux have two Gorak'nar officers on their ships.
-IKS Kelenek'che'sa (Vor'cha): "Halls of the Blind" in the Gorak'nar language. It refers to a planet where Devaneaux, then in Starfleet, had fought against the evil "Divine Alliance" twenty-two years before STO. I also have this as the retrofit.
-IKS VeS'jach (Negh'var): "Warcry".
-IKS Terminus Est (Kar'Fi): Latin for "this is the end". Named for the ship from Warhammer 40,000. Figured it was appropriate for a ship with fire coming out of its engines, heh.

My science officer's also had only a handful:

-U.S.S. Admiral Cole NCC-912006 (same configuration as the first two Ameses, heh): Named for a friend of mine.
-U.S.S. Massachusetts NCC-261788 (Nova with...I think I put the Aurora saucer on it, tried to make it look like the Nova/Rhode Island refit): Fits naming these ships after small New England states (I had a roleplaying ship, the New Hampshire, that followed this doctrine, lol).
-U.S.S. Thomas Makem NX-110432 (Olympic hull and nacelles, Horizon pylons and saucer): Named for Tommy Makem, the Bard of Armagh - probably the greatest Irish singer of all time.
-U.S.S. Gilneas NX-120710 (Nebula): Named to honor the worgen homeland in the (at the time) upcoming Cataclysm expansion - I got the ship in November, heh.

U.S.S Hobbit - LC Tact Ship looks like a Hobbit among other ships, and i am a fan of Lord of the Rings :P

And the,
USS Grunion

The Grunion was a Gato-class submarine that was sunk at Kiska, Alaska, during World War II. She was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the grunion, a small fish of the silversides family, indigenous to the western American coast.

My Great Uncle was aboard this submarine when it was sunk.
Also within the last 5 years there was an expedition to go find it, and they did!!!!

Advanced Heavy Cruiser Refit:-
USS Nautilus - Always had a thing for submarine stories... Which may be why I like the TOS era movies so much. Would have called one ship USS Dallas, but I knew I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about the soap opera whenever I saw the ship.

DSSV:-
USS Earhart - Named after THE female aircraft pilot, which suited my female toon. Would have named it Nellie Bly (after a 19th century female journalist), but the name sounded a bit silly.

Negh'Var:-
IKS Red October - Named after the stealth submarine in "the Hunt for Red October", not named after what the submarine was named after.

USS Camouflage
USS Alphaville
USS Ultravox
USS Depeche Mode
USS Wolfsheim

The tac admiral has his ships named after roman emperors.

USS Mark Aurel

USS Nymphenburg
USS Muenchen

I'm very much proud of my Texas heritage, and being from San Antonio I have a lot of Texas history basically in my backyard. So a lot of my ships are named for famous figures and/or locations in Texas history.

I also have a couple named for U.S. generals, moons and other science-y stuff for the science vessels, and 3 escorts named after 3 of the 5 stealth aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force (Lancer, Nighthawk, and Raptor).

I'll only name the significant named ships for mine.

VA Althenia D'aran (Eng, Andorian):
USS Weyhtan (Cruiser, named after the Andorian colony)
USS Aurek Besh (Assault Cruiser, it's the written form of Basic in Star Wars)
USS Chesapeake Bay (Excelsior Retrofit, obvious)

VA Ishaka Menno (Tac, Alien/near-human):
USS Altair (Defiant Retrofit, Name of world in ST, and since in the fanfic concept she's from, the Altair was a Defiant)
USS Boyington (Gal-X, From same fanfic concept, same class as in fic. Named after Greg "Pappy" Boyington of the 214th Marine Fighter Division, the 'Black Sheep Squadron'.)
USS Black Sheep (Prometheus, another nod to Boyington and the squadron)

VA K'dara (Tac, Klingon)
USS Tornado (Fleet Escort. I'm something of a weather nerd sometimes, being from the north end of tornado alley)

VA M'iaria (Sci, Caitian)
USS Kitsune (Nova, Japanese for Fox, often considered intelligent in stories)
USS Far Star (Recon Sci. Named for the ORIGINAL reference in Star Wars EU, well before it was a SWG server, it was the captured Corellian Corvette used as an exploration/assault ship in the Darkstryder campaign for the original West End Games d6 Star Wars RPG.)

Some others have been renamed, or haven't been significant enough to be named, those are all the 'important' ones I could think of.

Althenia's Delta Flyer is named the USS Rollerskate only as a joke. ;)

Rereading this thread made me stop at Identiaetlos' post, mentioning Gambier Bay. Makes me want to do a couple ships on a new alt sometime based on Taffy 3 and the Battle of Samar as well. The Johnston and the Samuel B. Roberts and their commanders especially deserve a nod, for bold actions taken by a little group of destroyers, destroyer escorts, and tiny escort carriers, to stop the Japanese main fleet (Including the Yamato, the largest battleship ever fielded, and which had as much gross tonnage by itself as ALL of the ships in Taffy 3 combined...) and save 200,000 US Marines. :)

Agressive names won't work for sci vessels, and I do not like famous people names, because a lot of other players alreaady uses them.

My former main was a tac. She commanded a exporation cruiser, with the name USS Unforgiven II (No, it has nothing to do with the Metallica song. There was befor that ship an USS Unforgiven. This one is just the successor.) The name came from the immersion of the toon.

And, yes, I am aware that there was a Pegasus from TNG cannon, but that one never actually existed since it was an illegal test of cloaking technology for Starfleet; mine was created as a cover-up.
