Stuck at retriving list of characters... AGAIN

Depends on the mission - if it was a Patrol - no, you're screwed - start over from scratch. If it was an episode type mission, you'll restart at the begining of the latest portion you rere on. If it's a Star Cluster mission, same deal as Episodes.

Both the server and the updater says the game is online,...obvious the character loader is offline,..or the whole world map. It's possible the status' they show are for the login only, but i dunno. Hopefully they fix it soon.:(

Allow me to add to the throng of voices: I'm stuck at the "retrieving character list" screen, too.

All through Beta, all was well (and I'm even playing with an antiquated nVidia GeForce 6-series graphics card, ****!). First few hours of Headstart, all is fine. Had to log off to spend time with my wife, come back aaaaand... BAM! Stuck here now.

Quit game, tried reloading it. No luck.

Tried rebooting computer, no luck.

Tried it again, no luck. Even booted me out and made me log in again!

Logged in again, no... Hell, y'see the pattern here??

also here in europe we have the same problem, i just dont understand why they are not able to fix the problem.. specially when they wrote by bete that bought and ordered new servers.. but not to much changed here.. i m also asking my self if someone from cryptic is checking the forum..

we are all customers, we all spend money on the preorder / and will pay also a fee at least they could write whats happening.. i dont think its so hard to write a short notice specially when we all have the problem..

i m used from wow that if there is a new update or new release that on the first days are problems but at least the always keep you noticed whats going on..

SO PLS CRYPTIC check the forums and FINALLY start writing infos whats happening. i guess we all have no problem to wait if we know whats going on!! but if it goes on linke this, i dont think i will buy a lto...

they need to invest in better servers, clearly they have insufficient capacity. take some from CO and hook them up for sto instead. afterall STO will be a lot bigger than CO is.

They're in for a WoW style patch and a beta class game. IMHO the game should stay in beta for awhile longer.

Keep in mind that there is alot of code, alot of connections, alot of clients and everything else that builds up a MMO, it takes time to isolate cause, and to determine the best or most appropriate solution. Also bare in mind this is the 2nd day of the head start, if it's hardware, parts can take time to arrive, if it's code, it takes time to find and patch. Put away your torches and pitchforks, and be patient. It will be fixed as fast as possible.

I've never been part of a MMO before, but I like Star Trek, and every minute closer to the deadline for deciding on to buy or not to buy that membership is really pushing me further and further into the "no" category. In order to increase confidence in this MMO, Cryptic should extend the enrollment period until sometime in March - to let the people with one free month a chance to try it and decide. I've only been able to play for about three hours since the "headstart" started and that's really not long enough, in my view, to commit to a $300 purchase.

Same problem here...started last night for me (10 hours ago) i got knocked offline trying to land on a planet... when i tried to log in again i tried for an hour, got both the retrieving list of characters as well as the connecting to login server. Now, 10 hours later, still.

Great way to get a headstart this? And not encouriging for thelifetime sub really....

I played wow from the beginning as well, but they caught on to have their releases happen close to a server maintenance day. It never went down as much as STO is, but I will defend STO because I am an avid trekkie and I want this game so badly to work. Ive been excited since 2003 when they put it in to dev, then in 05 when they stopped i cried, then last year i saw the movie get great reviews and wam they started dev again with cryptic....just saying....common criptic, talk to us, if you would tell us whats the 411 we will understand. Put us in the dark....it just gets people upset::(:(

Back to the log in server message. Its odd, my buddy who also has the game never got booted once yesterday, and I could not stay on for more than 30 min tops, before being booted and stranded at the log in server. Something is defiantly amiss. At this rate, our "head start" will be a laughable few levels when the GP gets in.

I got D/C in the middle of a mission with friends and have been unable to login for the last half hour, at first I got stuck on Retreiving list of characters and now stuck on connecting to login server. I am So frustrated considering my night time time schedule I havn't been able to play much with the server going sown last night and now this. Not to mention I keep getting D/C randomly when it is online. What's is wrong with companies, if the games not ready then don't release it and save is the frustration. I really don't want to spend my time off work attempting to login.

TLDR: RAAAGEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember this is pre-release. They are still load balancing the servers and making sure it is ready for use. It doesn't officially release until 2/2/2010, so they really have time to work it out.

We should place bets on how many crashes will happen on 2/2, release day. Most I saw was 3 solid unscheduled outages in 1 day during open beta.... think we might have 4 on 2/2.

I don't usually post on forums or anything, but this is complete garbage. I understand it's not a "official" release, but this head start is supposed to be a gameplay reward for pre-ordering. At current moment I have zero thoughts of actually buying this game. I have cancelled my pre-order and will give them until the end of the head start to fix their **** up. If they fail, they will never get a dime from my pocket again. But it's not just me, from the sounds of it, they'll lose a ridiculous number of players due to these problems.

Cryptic, you should have taken more bloody time! You rushed it, and now we, the players, are paying the price, literally and figuritively.

Had one that had a 2GB patch on day 2

and then there's the wow launch of people sitting in queue, for 5 hours just to log in. only to be booted by unstable server code =p

Seriously though, this is a backend issue. To those saying 'it's not even released yet' - seriously, stop making excuses. Beta was for testing and loadbalancing, Headstart was a reward for pre-ordering. If the headstart is seriously FUBAR, then they owe their preorder customers something in return.

Mission bugs I can accept, but this type of problem is inexcusable.

well well.. didnt we hear that already more than a week ago.. with beta.. how long do they need to order and i also remember that after beta, when we all waited 2 days until we could start playing again, they more or less wrote they install now the new servers and so on.. that just a joke by now..

I was under the impression that Open Betas were suppose to iron out the final bugs in the game and to run server stress tests. As much as I enjoy this game and I will continue to play hoping that things get better but I have to say......

I was hoping it would be back up. I sat thru the Down time from Hell earlier today got in another few hours (ish) then boom, i get d/c'd right after i catch up to where i ended things in beta. Then cant log back in, Login Server Connection Fail/ Time'd Out.

It better not be just full. "Undergoing Maint" is not a proper description of "Server full". "Server Full" is a great description for the issue. HOwever, if you are installing a new server to correct capacity issues "undergoing Maint" is appropriate. I reccomend that server install, as an IT Professional my self.


Man, I'm giving out free (unwanted advice). *checks clock* Yup, just what I thought, I'm up too late. Tis almost 3am, so I'm out.

HOpe the servers are back up when I'm back up :)

If you were in the middle of a mission when you lost connection to the server...do you lose everything you've done in that mission? Will the mission be aborted? Can you do it over? Because I am not amused...:confused:

yeah the instance will reset after an hour or two, maybe less, but I know how you feel, I was one pat away from a mission complete. annoying ;(

if you wanted to make a prognose how many people gonna or wanted to buy that game i would guess after release around 1million in the next month.. that would be.. well a couple of hundrets of miilion dollars with fees and price of game and merchandising products.. hmm..
so they should have enough budget to fix it but i just think that did the "austrian" way (thats the way in my country by the way).. lets start the game, and all the problems we fix tomorow..or when there are too many complains than we will fix it..

as i said, they only word what comes to my mind.. DISASTER...

While there is a seperate thread for fleet recruitment I can of course not try to recruit you for it.... however United Federation Starfleet is a very good fleet.... as well as a great group in Second Life.

I am the same way mostly, I prefer to play alone or with close friends. I have very few people that I choose to "befriend" in games. Theres gotta be something about em that I like to do that. I used to play an MMO where I had tons of friends, however at high levels, I spent 90% of my time helping them out and not getting time to myself lol.
