I hate to say it but I actually sort of agree with the OP. I personally thought the lifetime subscription was a bad idea anyway, and the ability to play as a "Borg" didn't seem all that special. I did get a 12 month subscription because I don't like the idea of only 2 slots for characters...but still I can see why people would be upset. For the lifetimers, Cryptic has your money now and they can do what they want with it, whether the game is working or not.

They have not employeed Scotty, and so when they say you have 4 hours to reboot, the guy takes the entire 4 hours. Now if it were Scotty he would say "I need frou hours, Captain", and then 10 mins later... "she is working again, but I do not know for how long"...

I know, it's a disaster when the forums go down on the head start before the actual game even starts. I feel so bad for being jipped on early pre-release game time that thousands of people never would have done anyway.
And opening weekend! It's an abomination! The servers are going down! It's unheard of! No MMO has EVER had issues on opening weekend! We are all going to die without our digital IV!
Chill out.
Walk outside.
Take a break.
Enjoy the game as it stabilizes.

Of course it was a quick promo to get as much money as possible upfront, They're a company and as such are run like one. I don't regret buying the lifetime sub though, It's an MMO afterall and as such will always be worked on. If the game really fails hard, I doubt anyone who bought the lifetime sub or STO in general will be looking at Cryptics future games.

the bad part about a game is in th beginning, there's a ton of critical issues to solve. Later on, the content gets updated, bugs worked out, and exploits fixed. I guess we lifetime scribers are just glass-half-full kinda people by nature.
Since I have .....forever....... to play and no wory about levling up my character in one month, I don't feel the pressure to get every last level in head start. Only thing I'm upset about are the bugs, but that's what they're working on.

I'd rather have server problems in BETA than during live. And BETA is for testing, not for fun. Also, there will be problems at launch, unexpected things will happen, and they will be fixed. Just wondering... is it against some unwritten rule on this forum to criticize Cryptic and how they run the game/server?
I've seen many MMO launches and this is one of the least good ones. These downtime issues should have been adressed in beta stage. It's not like it's their first MMO, they should have been better prepared.

Newsflash, this IS live. It HAS launched. Just head starters can play now, the rest follows on February 2nd. Now ask yourself: If they can't handle the head starters, what do you think will happen once they open the flood gates on February 2nd?

Well, I have a lifetime subscription and I'm feeling okay. If it's still like this in three months, then I might have a problem. Regardless, while I feel the game could be (and should be) a lot better than this, I think they did a pretty good job on what is in the game (bugs aside) and I am sure I'll still care to play two years from now... and I'm pretty sure the game will still be here then, so a lifetime sub made sense.

major problem I saw was addressing server loads in beta, typically an issue taken care of in alpha.
it's quite obvious the repercussions doing this cryptic's way has on the game at launch.....
the HS launch didn't even last more than 20min before it went down the first time, and hasn't really improved at all......

I expected so much more from an experienced developer but so far I can only really describe my feelings about this game as monumentally let-down. As a European resident it isn't helped that everything is geared towards the US market and the rest of the world is given the finger while expected to pay more (taxes and the like) while receiving a sub standard service in return. I understand economics and the fact that the US is the main market but some effort to address things beyond the front door would help.
Server configration is dire, 1 cluster in CA? Come on! Using Del Taco for special give-away codes? Most of the world and a fair amount of the States don't have Del Taco. No communication from staff and a total fixation on milking the cash cow and doing sweet FA to fix the issues at hand. GET A NEW SERVER SET UP ! It isn't rocket science and everyone in the Cryptic community is being affected by terrible server management at the moment.
If this doesn't change then the end of this game will come sooner rather than later. Take Tabula Rasa, good concept and heavily instanced died out because of the same issues here except the dev team actually did something instead of watching their single server crash multiple times daily. Doesn't bode well for the actual launch.
Flaming commence, I paid for this product and am entitled to feel let down by and vent my criticisms at Cryptic.

I do kinda have to agree with the OP, and I am one of the life-timers so it's well within my rights to complain. Sine head start, of the 5 times I have started the client up to play, THREE of them greeted me with a server down message. That was forgivable during beta, but we are PAYING for this now. If the game wasn't ready, they should have extended the beta and worked out the kinks.
They have two days before the flood of Wal-Mart buyers who have no forgiveness or patience show up, and the reputation of the game is ruined forever. I guess they weren't around on launch day for SWG....

I bought a lifetime sub. I have 4 lifetime subs to LOTRO and I've never regretted one cent of the money I spent - in fact, because I haven't paid a cent in monthly fees to that game, I can afford to play this one. Were I paying monthly, here, I *would* be upset about downtime - it's wasting the cash I paid this month. But I have from now until the servers go dark, to play this game. A few hours downtime before the official launch is meaningless. Even after launch...what do I care, I'll go play LOTRO until the servers are back up. I've lost nothing to the downtime.
You have. Poor monthly paying suckers. Think of me, in 17 months, when I'm playing for free, and you're into Cryptic for $255.00.

Actually this is only true to a certain extent. ZYesterday I was defending Cryptic, however now after witnessing how unstable the servers actually are I am thinking otherwise. The last MMO ive seen that launched with such terrible server instability was many years ago. Most companies these days are capable of running a damn server. Let alone keeping us informed of what is actually wrong.
Anyone who is OK with this situation obviously has a ton of free time. Unlike us who work/still in school.

As to "imagine on Feb 2nd", Id say yeah, it'll probably be similar, because you don't seem to understand that NO ONE in their right mind expects a MMO to function perfectly, or even close to perfect, at launch day. If we have this same amount of trouble 3 months in, THEN I'll be worried.
Cryptic has done MMOs before, but guess what? They're progamming is different. May not even be on the same type of server, component-wise. If patience is bad, I should be given the death penalty, since I took care of an Alzheimer's patient for 10 years, by myself, in-home care.
And yes, I'm sure there's plenty of people like you, impatient, demanding, and with unrealistic expectations, that are leaving in droves. Good riddance, I say!

Almost every mmo I've ever played has had issues like this first couple weeks to a month after launch, sometimes longer.
Game officially launches in a couple days, so 1 month out from that we are still likely to have issues. It happens...just do something else for a while.

Game has been up for 2, count 'em, 2 whole days, and people are moaning 'cos of a little server problem. All games have 'em at the start.
WoW didn't, and it had a much larger launch than the pre-order load of this game. We have yet to scratch the surface of load issues, the retail copies from Target/Wal-Mart will likely mean 2-3 times what we have now. What happens then?

I said it before and I'll say it again.
I paid for lifetime. I have all the time in the world to play once things get sorted out. I'm not impatient enough to start ranting because things are broken right at this very minute.
It's not like Cryptic foresaw these problems, or even worse, are doing it on purpose.
In a few weeks time, things will be worlds more stable, and I'll have the rest of the game's life to play. I have no reason to be anything more than mildly irritated that I can't log in right nooooow.

I will be sure to keep that in kind when you realize in a year or so that I don't have to continously pay 15 bucks a month, and you will. Way before then it will be worked out and much better than it is now. It pays for itself in 16 months, gives me the Borg, and 2 extra slots for my sons to also have characters. There is NO WAY (and I will come back on this forum and kiss your ass and eat my own words if I am wrong here) that Cryptic could afford to let the Star Trek franchise die online it it's first MMO, within a measly 16 months. Ain't gonna happen.
Not sure why people think you're freaking out though, it's an opinion that I simply had to rebutt.

To break it down running on the same engine will result in the same back end code more or less. However to give you example I can make a build for a game on an engine I use and someone else can do the same on the exact same engine. We can then test both builds and find totally different bugs.

I did get a 12 month subscription because I don't like the idea of only 2 slots for characters...but still I can see why people would be upset. For the lifetimers, Cryptic has your money now and they can do what they want with it, whether the game is working or not.
There are some things that I do not mind and not finding perfection in the first week of a new game is one of those things I do not mind.

WoW DIDN'T have server problems at launch? Where were you, they sure as heck did. They had things like huge population servers sharing database clusters with 3 lower pop servers - and all 4 of them being unavailable for hours, or lagged so bad that opening a corpse took 15 minutes. The first month they had to totally reconfigure how worlds utilzed and shared database clusters...and they had something like 30 servers to reconfigure. It didn't go fast.
Sure - they *had* the foresight to have 10 or so unopened servers at launch that they could pull into action in the first few days, but that didn't help the people that chose to go to a specific server because..."that's where all the big clans said they were going before launch."

That sometimes there a problems that you do not forsee..
Again, squealing about it will not help pube, and critising people who may be disadvantaged does seem a little on the aggressive side.
However, if the server issue continue on for more than a week, with the same regularity it might be an issue.
Personally without knowledge of what the problem is it is hard to say.
For me it looks like they don't have enough capacity to cover the amount of people wanting to play...
If thats all it is, well its not too hard to address and there is a big positive in there..

you are correct, however it is a fact that both games run off the same engine, are produced by the same company, hence will naturally have much of the same code. The only real difference would be the graphical files, perhaps some of the animation files, and then the one element that is not included in CO, which is space. Recognizing how large space combat is I would venture a large chunk of code to be original, hence I reached my 60% stat off a knowledge of basic structure for the game itself not a random selection.

Wow, you totally put words in my mouth that weren't there. I never said it's representative of a full day of players. But instead of ridiculing you and putting words in your mouth:
Thank you for only proving my point about just how many people are interested n the game. If you were here in Beta, you'd know the servers are not inherently unstable. Heck, they even expanded the number of servers in the cluster because the servers in Open Beta ended up being so flooded with people that the majority couldn't get in.

I've been here since open beta. In fact, I've been here since very early on in open beta. It's not like the servers were exactly getting stress tested back then. I'm also currently going to college, learning to do this stuff for a living. I know a little something about how this technology works. Maybe not as much as some, seeing as how I'm still learning, but I know enough to understand how the process works.
I've also been playing MMOs for quite some time. Sometimes the servers are simply unpredictable at these early stages, no matter how much beta and stress testing they underwent. When things are like they are now, the people maintaining the servers aren't just going to sit around and shrug their shoulders. They're going to, you know, work on the servers.
On a side note, why is it that when someone says, "no disrespect intended" or "no offense," the rest of whatever they say is usually geared directly towards being either offensive or disrespectful?

Actually, WoW had an EXTREMELY bad launch. I was a major ******** fan, and yet almost sold my account to a friend because of how it was. A smooth launch was FFXI (assuming you played the JP version, as the EN version was 1 year later).
WoW launch had very, very long server queues, servers dropped every 2-3 hours for 4+ hours, server lag was absolutely ridiculous, loot lag could make you sit in one spot FOR OVER AN HOUR, and if you logged out, you had to wait in the queue again, etc.
The only thing WoW didn't have that this does is rubberbanding. I never got bounced around on WoW. However, only times I've had a rubberband issue on this is during the tutorial. After that, it's smooth sailing it seems.
