Steven Seagal works for Cryptic?

Why is it that hand-to-hand melee does like twice the DPS of a phaser rifle (that should be able to melt rock?)

Phasers have to go through personal shields first, and personal shields are only for phaser defense, so melee attacks just effect physical HP. Though phasers are always more powerful against physical HP than hand to hand melee, unless your using a weapon like a batleth can it be more powerful.

omg.

You are under the false impression that the thread op asked some form of valid question that deserves an answer.

He was saying that it is un-trek like that his phaser cannot instantly melt an target that has no shields and that close combat weapons do more (aka to much) damage than a ranged weapon (that by trek-style should instantly kill a target).

He obviously has ignored the fact that this is a game.

"It's a game" doesn't justify blatant holes in the game's logic. It breaks the suspension of disbelief.

It's not just that flailing your arms around does damage comparable to an energy weapon from the 25th century, they do almost twice as much damage. I fear the day that someone in the game figures out that if you grab a pointy stick, you can do FAR more damage than simply punching someone. Clearly, this devastating technology must be kept secret.

Since fists are twice as powerful as phasers in STO, maybe we'll see the secret prototype ship USS Chuck Norris that's just one giant metal fist with an engine?

It's not logic breaking at all. James T. Kirk could punch through the hull of a starship with his bare hands.

Are you sure that wasn't James T. Norris?

No no... you don't understand. If you argue that the game isn't logical all they have to do is invent the such and such. So what you are asking for is for them to make up some remotely rational explanation. Why don't you just invent one yourself?

its science fiction...

Just use ramming speed. Physically ramming your ship into a target does more damage than multiple "megaisoton" nuclear explosions (aka photon torpedos).

Because it's the sci-fi writer(s), and not the audience (or in this case: the players) who is(/are) responsible for the plot being coherent.

My character has vaporized enemies with his fists.

Also by using your same logic, someone using a batleth should be able to cut you in half with one swipe. Someone hit with a plasma grenade shouldn't run around for 15 seconds burning and be able to shrug it off. Like someone said, it's a game. Certain things have to be sacrificed for gameplay.
