Video cards Burning up still an issue?

There was a thread a while ago about having to set your maxFPS to like 40 or something or the coding in the game would redline your video card... was this ever addressed, Fixed? or proven for that matter?

I too would like a definative dev response to this as I am ignorant in this matter and am concerned that I will mess up my GPU and end up with a burnout.

May I suggest this posting be made in the TECHNICAL forums area? :)

Never had an issue here.

I remember reading that and alot of us (myself included) asked for a DEV response and as far as I know one was never made.

OP can you put DEVS PLEASE READ in your subject header?

Yeah, it seems that STO tries to output maximum framerate, and so will redline your graphics card by trying to run the game at infnity fps. If you run the game with the command line extension -maxfps 40 it's supposed to fix that. My graphics card still screams like a *****, though. It runs Crysis at max settings with no problems, but the fan squeals like a stuck pig when running STO.

Do you actually know the temperature that your card gets to? Nvidia or ATI? I run an Ati 4870HD which is known to run hot and when I'm running number crunching projects it uses 100% and reaches 79c. Running STO reaches no more than 69c so where's the problem?

The game still has a problem with redlining. To fix, just type "maxfps __" each time you start. Choose a number between 30-60.

The game will, by default, put out the maximum frame rate our rig is capable of, unless you enable VSync. If your hardware can't run at full tilt 24/7, you should limit your frame rate.

Personally, I hope the devs tweak this a bit. Running the system at full tilt all the time means that your video card and even CPU in some cases will thermally throttle, leaving no reserve for load bursts. It causes people to have to set their graphics settings lower than they would otherwise, just to have enough reserve for the rare cases where it's needed.
