Distribute Shield Power
 
While searching for something completely different, I stumbled across this thread which has been archived when the forums were wiped for the release. I found something very interesting there:

I always thought it was just a psychological thing, making myself believe my damaged shield quadrants would regenerate faster when hitting the button (i.e. the middle of the shield vector power distribution display)... no, it was totally increasing regeneration on those.

I always thought it would just reset the power distribution to be even across all four shield quadrants if you have, for example, put everything on your forward shields. Then I found that the power distribution to a single quadrant only works for a couple of seconds until you have to do it again; now I see what actual use Distribute Shield Power has (and somehow feel dumber for shoving the idea into the area of "typical MMO superstition")!


And now I realize, you actually have to spam that button always when you are not selectively assigning shield power to one quadrant. Can I please map this to the space bar in addition to "Fire All Beams"? I don't think I really want to spam over and over two buttons all the time while fighting instead of only one (which is already a borderline stupid mechanic)...

Wow, I just assumed all the regen goes to the drained shield! No wonder my regen skills seem so ineffective when I'm in hot water

Yeah, I've seen that as well. It seems the shield regen is divided among the 4 shields equally. However, if 3 shields are full, and one is weaker, then it only gets 1/4 of the regen. So balancing all shields seems to inject more shield energy into all shields which is better over all.

If that is the case, it should be changed. Full energy should be injected into the weaker shield always, so if 1 shield is down, it gets 100% of the shield regen. Clicking on one shield facing should transfer energy from the other shields, and also get the 100% shield regen on it (even if it is not the weakest shield).

This is all from what I have seen, I have no proof but it does seem to be something like this. This is just a big guess :P

The DEL key (by default) is your friend.

IMPO, I like the option of re-balancing (not having it bound to the space bar). I may just want to turn the ship instead of transferring energy to a weak quadrant, or transfer manually. The reason is because if I'm recharging one quadrant, the other quadrants will be weaker and more susceptible to damage overall, instead of just one portion of my ship.

Remember: the DEL key is your friend (almost as much as the space bar).

The distubute shield power evenly spaces regen to all shield facings.

the arrow keys or facing icons only distribute power to that facing when clicked.


both can be put into your power tray in game and if used they continue to distribute power for a few seconds after you are done hitting the proper keys.

I hate clickfests... Shields should be treated differently all together... What was that other game? I forgot the name, but it had an awesome shield balance mechanic.

Basically, you had a little marker that you place anywhere over your ship and shield indicator. If it is in the middle, then it tries to keep all shields balanced. If you move it to the front shield, it tries to keep the front shields at 100% before charging the other shields. If you move it to the back, same thing with the rear shields. You could also move it to the front-right, so it keeps the front and starboard shields up, or just move it up a bit from the middle, so it favors the front shields, but does not leave the side shields without charge.

That would make shield management and reinforcing more tactical. Escorts can keep their front shields reinforced, or whatever combination you like and without making this another click fest!!! Cryptic seems to love button mashing, but I hate it. Fix this, and add autofire!!!

That sound like an awesome mechanic! But well, my only real problek with the Distribute Shield Power mechanic is that it basically enforces even more button-mashing (i.e. spam the same button over and over)...
