Shield balancing = another clickfest
 
I hate clickfests... Shields in STO should be treated differently all together... What was that other game? I forgot the name, but it had an awesome shield balance mechanic.

Basically, you had a little marker that you place anywhere over your ship and shield indicator. If it is in the middle, then it tries to keep all shields balanced. If you move it to the front shield, it tries to keep the front shields at 100% before charging the other shields. If you move it to the back, same thing with the rear shields. You could also move it to the front-right, so it keeps the front and starboard shields up, or just move it up a bit from the middle, so it favors the front shields, but does not leave the side shields without charge.

That would make shield management and reinforcing more tactical. Escorts can keep their front shields reinforced, or whatever combination you like and without making this another click fest!!! Cryptic seems to love button mashing, but I hate it. Fix this, and add autofire!!!

I rebound my fore shield enforcement and balance keys to a closer spot near my WASD keys. Makes gameplay easier than constantly clicking to rebalance my shields.

Try it out if you don't like to click interface for shield balancing. Original keybinds for shield balancing are up fore, down aft, left and right... well you get the idea. Delete key is balanced.

That's cool, but it still does not address the button mashing fest. Do you want to keep constantly clicking the forward shields button when making a strafing run? Does it make the game better?

Missionforce: Cyberstorm! that's the game! freaking game back from 1996 has better shield management than this game? unbelievable!

There is no advantage to constantly clicking it, you just need to do it every few seconds (3 or 4 I think) if that shield is actually dropping. This becomes less of an issue if you actually fly around a bit and spread the damage out.

You could always set up a toggle macro... pretty straight forward.

You know you can use the arrow keys to divert power, right? The only time I ever click for shields is to have them balance equally, and that's not very common. Plus, I'm not spamming the arrow keys as much as I do the spacebar for firing phasers.

A toggle macro? is that something like an external application? If the game can be made better with external applications, then it means there is some flaw with the game. I still do not understand the obsession cryptic has with button mashing. Limited autofire, no ground autofire, clicking to constantly move or balance shields. That should all be a setting we can toggle on/off, not something we have to keep activating.

Sheez, even now a days we have better automation. I don't have to hold down the button on my microwave to make a damn burrito, and even my washing machine can do more complex stuff without my help!

Spamming is spamming. And it is not good. If I'm charging the enemies, then I want full energy to the frontal shields until I say otherwise. If I'm running away, I want full energy to rear shields until I say otherwise. I should not have to keep activating that, this is supposed to be a ship in the 25th century, in a game in the 21st century.

This is a quality of life issue, and I agree.

There are too many aspects of STO combat right now that reward spamming keys and should not. If I want to put as much power into a particular shield facing as possible, I just spam the relevant 'redirect shield strength' button. The difference between me spamming it and another captain using it infrequently is large. It should be possible to passively instruct your ship to constantly reinforce shields on a chosen facing without hitting a button every second or two.

Thats cuz geordie was blind and all the brail wore off the other buttons


I think it's fun having to franticly jam buttons on my keyboard when I play. Not like EVE online where you click 3 times and your ship flies itself while you sit there and stare at it
