What mistakes have you made?
 
In terms of selecting a profession, picking racial traits, alotting skill points, purchasing equipment, what things have you done wrong (or discovered to be misguided) since you first started on STO. I thought it might be nice to hear what others have learned and what they won't do again when they make a new character.

My biggest mistake so far is in changing my bridge officer skills too often to try new things, which causes me to run out of points.

That and not paying attention to which skill slot it's being placed in and replacing a wanted skill . I've done that at least three times . Moral of the story don't do this when you're really tired.

Not realising that a good portion of my ship skills require emitters, rather than deflector dish, didnt I feel stupid when I realised i was going around with the wrong deflector array for several days ><

Various crap captain skills that arent' exactly bad, but also not the best.

I rolled as Vulcan (already saddled with two useless Ground traits) and then took Nerve Pinch (because, c'mon, it's a Vulcan). This wasn't a mistake so much as me shrugging and accepting that my character will be somewhat less effective than a custom alien with Efficient, Astrophysicist, Warp Theorist and Techie.

I held off on putting points into a particular torpedo type (since I wasn't sure what I'd be using on my ship at endgame) and now don't have enough leftover points to put into Starship Quantum Projectiles.

I put 9 points into Starship Hazard System, and have since switched out all the Bridge Officer abilities I had that operated off Hazard. Whoops.
