Name restriction policy

I think it should be here.

I just found a Locutus of Borg wandering around (which seems ok, but shouldn't be there) and my heavy escort is the Kobayashi Maru.

We shouldn't be able to use those names (or Indiana Jones, that really ****ed me off).

I know this is not an only-rp game but thinks like this crash the climax imho.

There is a policy. Copyrights shouldn't be violated in names, and it can be reported. I personally - as a roleplayer - see no reason why there should be a Captain Indiana Jones, to stay with that example. Its Star Trek. There is no Indiana Jones. And I also see no point in having like 5680 Captain Kirks, Picards, Siskos or Janeways roaming around. If people wanna roleplay, they should be creative enough to come up with an own character.

I did get a chuckle out of Lt. Cannabis Sativa, flying around last night. :p

And who are you to say that there's not someone named Indiana Jones in the 25th century? I have a friend who's name is Chris Picard - should he not be allowed to use his real name as a toon name simply because the game doesn't want another 'Captain Picard' running around? Any kind of naming restrictions outside of derogatory/racist/otherwise offensive material is way too much.

That being said, though, I do support being able to turn off names, because those that don't want to see Captain Zaphod Beeblebrox of the USS Heart of Gold shouldn't have to.

To be honest, there might be an Indiana Jones, it is a large galaxy after all.

There just would not be THE Indiana Jones.

The rage of stupid baby names is on the rise. Maybe it hasn't reached critical mass in the 24th and 25th century?

In all seriousness I agree that some of the names out there do not belong. Until a name filter is put in, I would suggest to just report them and move on.

Names cannot be copyrighted. You cannot violate a copyright in a name since such a thing does not exist. Please see the US copyright office's FAQ, specifically the questions "Can I copyright the name of my band?" and "How do I copyright a name, title, slogan or logo?". http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-protect.html

Sorry to nitpick, but misinformation about intellectual property law really, really irritates me.

Also, while you're there, read about how to copyright your Elvis sighting.
