general combat speed question

From what Ive read on forums for Escort ships, seems the popular choice is to stay at 1/4 impulse while fighting. Is there not any advantage to altering speed up and down during combat? Or is it pointless because if you're faster you avoid hits but equally dont hit targets so well?

If you go full throttle you can move yourself out of firing range long enough to refresh some cool downs or even give your shields/hull a little break. Sometimes it might even help to keep yourself out of a particularly nasty firing arc in the event that your cruiser target lucks out with Evasive Maneuvers and Emergency Power to Engine.

I kind of wondered if going into battle and taking an Alpha Strike at full speed (not full Impulse, but Thrusters) would be more damage than say half thrusters. I'm not really sure how big of a roll speed plays in damage dealt and evaded.

Yeah Im starting to realise I need to get out of dodge QUICK sometimes to repair. I HOPE speed does play a part in damage dealt as I think itd be nice to alter it up and down even if its only minor differences, but with so much going already, I suspect it doesnt...
