Deflectors vs Deflector Field - FBP?
Just looking for some clarification
Checking the stats of my captain, I notice a strange thing between Deflectors stat and Deflector Field stat.
The Deflectors stat says it enhances Feedback Pulse --
However, the stat description for Deflector Field says at the bottom that learning 9 ranks of Deflector Field will allow your captain to train a BO in Feedback Pulse III....implying to me at least that the stat increases the effectiveness of FBP.
Is one or the other description incorrect?
All abilities are affected by 3 different player skills. You can find this out by looking at the Info window (right-click) of a bridge officer candidate. Some ability tooltips also show this in the Power window, but the display there is not as consistent.
In the case of Feedback Pulse, it is affected by:
Starship Deflector Field
I assume Deflectors improves anything that operates through the system by beefing up the overall system and power capacity to it
I assume Deflector dish improves any uber science beams that are apparently the new fad for geek weapons.
I assume Deflector Field would improve non-uber beam deflctor system attributes...basically skills that are not focused, but instead are area propigations(is that the right word?...is it even spelled correctly)
If my reading and memory is correct:
Deflectors would improve both tachyon beam and  Science Team
Deflector Dish would only help the tachyon beam
Deflector Field would only help the  Science Team.
I think FBP plays off the shield(thus deflector system and its field, as an area propigaction) itself, so it likly benefit from both Deflector and Deflector Field. Its not so much focusing the feedback pulse, but only returning in a focused form what was already focused from its source.
Focused Deflector specials are limited to the 90 or 45 deg(I cant remember) arc for which the dish itself is limited in delivering from. FBP is omni-directional.
In Star Trek, shields are produced by shield generators. Deflectors are used for sensors, gravitational deflection (for navigation), and miscellaneous energy transfer or projection.
In game, this functionality is mirrored. RSP is a shield system ability, and is therefore affected by shield skills in the Starship Engineering skill tree.
What I said before is true: every ability is affected by 3 player skills, which are made clear by looking at the Info window of a bridge officer candidate.
I will also add that the child skills (i.e., skills in higher tiers, such as Deflector Field) have a greater boost effect than their parents (i.e., skills in lower tiers, such as Starship Operations). The downside is that the child skills are more specialised and therefore do not affect as many abilities as the parent skills.
Ok, the deflector dish does provide forward "shielding", but not on the same order of the Shields used in combat, nor can it be used effectivly against current weapons. I thought I had read at one point in MA that they were related systems.
Reading it briefly again, I see the deflector dish is still limited to forward arcs and can be used to extend around other vessels(so it raises the question of why "Extend Shields" is so effective in STO?).
So would you say Deflectors skills is for both shield emmitors and the navigational deflector/emittor abilities? Deflector field skills still seems to be an area/omni-directional projection speciization(perhaps associated with the shield emittors only, not the deflector dish) and deflector dish skills still seems to be for focused beams within the 45-90deg arc?
Its a moot point in the overall discussion, but the Deflector dish seems to house sensors around it not beause the dish is a sensory device, but because the seperate sensor system has to be able to work effectivly through the interference during the dish's operation.
I could have sworn I was using Deflector and Deflector Field to improve RSP...it must be Science Team..ah, thats it. Ok, thats the shield skill i was thinking of.
