Actually Space is surprisingly small. The secret reason NASA scaled back the space program so much was when the probes hit the invisible zone walls.

lol I think they scaled back because someone looked at the Saturn V and said "We went to the moon in THAT thing! Who in their right mind..."

OP: Word.

the problem is exploration is not like it is in EVE... in EVE.. you go to a system, and you open up your scanning tool. you fire probes out and begin triangulating and narrow down "hits" on your scans with your probes until you find something and then you can warp to it... if they had a similar thing in STO, where you could go to a nebula, and start scanning like this, rather than just... flying into markers in space, it would be a whole lot better... and these planets need to be there all the time.. not just generated for you one-time-only and then vanish when you leave. that's not exploring :(

everything is too disjointed, you just can't help but feel like you are playing inside some small boxes everywhere you go.

Stongly Agree.

But suggest you move the comments to the thread about exploration and diplomacy.

This thread
has a real proposal and could always use more feedback about exploration
