Klingon First Contact / Exploration Missions: A Simple Proposal
I started posting this in another thread simply as I've become tired of seeing "If you want that feature play Fed" or "that isnt what Klingons do." I do not agree with that assessment.
The Klingon Empire survives by expansion and conquest. This can not be done with out exploration. And, with exploration comes the need for Diplomacy and First Contact. Below are a few examples.
Mission Type: First Contact (Primitive Race)
--Arrive in System, Objective: Scan the Planet--Result: First (or Last) Contact has been made with a new race. Blood has been spilled for the Empire.
Mission Type: First Contact (Advanced Race)
--Arrive in System, Objective: Scan Unknown Object--Result: First Contact has been made with a new race. The Empire has gained new technology and/or territory. Blood has been spilled for the Empire.
Mission Type: Exploration (Fauna Survey)
--Defeat Federation Survey Vessel--Result: A planetary surface has been explored for the Empire. And blood has been spilled for your Targ, and the Empire.
This doesn't look bad. I like it.
One mission type I had in mind was based on a TOS episode. There Klingons supplied one side among the Indigenous Lifeform with primitive weapons. (Obviously, Kirk interfered and all that.)
This is a kind of story I could see repeated in STO for the Klingons. Your task is to support one faction so the race will become a vassal of the Klingon Empire. Deliver weapon supplies, help them destroy their opponents, stuff like that. And you can add a nice conflict with the Federation, too.
One related mission type might be "Disrupt Diplomatic Efforts". Two rivaling sides are discussing a peace treaty, under Federation guidance. Help one side to gain an advantage so they will continue (and win) the war, becoming your ally. Stop the Federation ship(s) protecting an important summit to disrupt the treaty. Fake an assault so that the peace treaty comes to a stop. Could be a mission like: Destroy 5 freighters and manipulate the weapon traces to show use of anti-protons, which are used by the race we don't want to win. (Also puts a nice twist to the "scan the wrecks" missions where you always end up finding anti-protons that apparantly every race in the galaxy uses, but clearly identifies them every time.)
I still like it, but keep in mind that the Klingons are conquerers so they would only treat a powerful race as equals - all others are only possible subjects.
I like the overall idea, but just a reminder... (not to the OP, really, but to others. I've read some really bad comments about what Klingons will or won't do.) we need to leave someone alive to rule. In that spirit, I suggest we add a "Round up the Leaders" mission type, or anything dealing with insurrection, really.
Conquest mission types, possible names:
1. Round up the Leaders
2. Catch the Saboteurs
3. Hunt the Resistance Forces
4. Challenge the Leader (of a planetary/city government)
5. Repel the Insurrectionists
6. Exterminate those without Honor (thieves, smugglers, drug users/dealers)
7. Trial by Fire (cleanse a local population of vermin)
And why can't Klingons dispatch a warship to escort a colony vessel? Or deliver supplies to a Klingon Forward Observation Post? Or run engineers to a Listening Post? Or deliver medical supplies to the heroes fighting on the front lines? I think we should have all of these things. It would certainly be a nice change of pace, instead of defending the Empire from those terribly dangerous flowers. :)
Your a genius! Do it cryptic!
