Why is the UI draining the system?
You would think that the complex, high-res 3D animation, was the biggest drain on system resources. Or maybe the multiple light sources and complex shadows... but no...

When I turn off my UI (alt+F12) my framerate nearly doubles!

I really can't see how it is that this static image of some 16 color graphics should drain this much... In fact, the system should get faster, as the field of vision is reduced by it.

My first guess might be that it has something to do with the transparancy of the UI elements.

actually with more icons on the screen the FPS gets even worse.

try to open your inventory while your framerate is a little below 60FPS you will notice at least a 5 - 10 FPS drop from the inventory alone (and there is nothing transparent).
The more items you have in the invenotry the worse it gets because it has to display even more icons.

...and it borders on pure crazyness if you think about it that Cryptic makes a big deal about Polygon Budgets on Starships while the User Interface is the worst FPS sucker in the whole game engine.

If i open the exchange the Frames drop more then on any 3D event in the game.

I just tested this myself, didn't seen any change in FPS with or without UI.

Do you have your FPS capped? (at 30/60/120)

I usually get about 60 FPS in a non-combat map, but when i hit Alt+F12 it climbs well above 100.
