A suggestion for future ship hull designs
Due to the recent question about "What make (random ship type) a (particular ship class type)?" I started looking at ship designs and what is in game. I realized that we do not have any of the 'over/under nacelle ' ship hulls in game. Sure it was only used for frigates/destroyers/light cruisers, but it is a proveen type of hull design. So I am suggesting that in the future maybe some new variants could be added to existing classes, or a few new ship classes using the 'over/under' desing might be added. It would allow for some more variations so we, the player, all feel a bit more unique. Let us be honest. We all want to feel 'special', and not so much 'cookie cutter'.
Thanks for reading, and hope some new ideas come from this.
An after thought also, but any one else ever wondered why no Star Fleet vessels ever tried using the Warp Ring design that Vulcans and some Romulan vessels use? It is a proven design, and with Vulcan in the Federation wouldn't they use a proven design eventually?
Just got curious on that one.
I thought by over/under you meant a paired top/bottom combination like the Constellation.
In addition to the Miranda and Nebula, though, the Luna class and its subclasses naturally have nacelles under the saucer. The Akira's and Oslo's nacelles are also under the body, although the Zephyr is on top. And the Saber and Ushaan have underslung nacelles.
The Emissary and Nomad Star Cruiser classes also have nacelles under the body, giving that class an under configuation even though it's not the default. The Horizon class Research Vessel also has an option for the nacelles to be, if not under the body, directly in line with it.
Finally, the Deep Space Science Vessel (Destiny) configuration pretty much seems to be the Luna or Miranda arrangement, but turned upside down. So while their nacelles are above the body (except for the Nimbus class, which might end up below the body in some mix and match configurations) the "mission pod" is under the body instead of above it.
So there are underslung configuations, you just have to look for them. :D Mainly, you'll see them in Escorts and Science Vessels, Cruisers typically stick to the configuration typical of the original Enterprise.
actually there is a pretty cool variant of the luna kicking around deviant arts with nacelles above the saucer.
I'd like a variant like that, please
Guess I needed to provide so visual reference.....
Akula Class Destroyer
I remember these from StarFleet Command as the first ship you tried to get after starting a game. Tough little ship with great speed and turning. You could challenge a B'rel with decent effort in this ship. While there are a few over/under in STO they all have 4 nacelles. I do like 4 nacelle designs, but a few of these 2 nacelle over/under hull would be nice as well.
The two designs that got me thinking about this were.....
Not an great upgrade, but get the base idea across. The upper nacelle should sit higher to clear the saucer section. Another idea would be to have the saucer connect to the front of the engineering hull, and have the deflector built into the front of the saucer.
Exeter Class (from Star Trek: Legacy)
This looks like a ship we would have in the STO time era. I see influence from the escort and science ship currently in game. Just a nice sleek design that looks nice and functional. I would enjoy a design simular to this in game.
So hopefully that better explains what I meant.
I thought that was what you meant...
Yeah, none of the existing ships could be laid out like that. Possibly the Heavy Cruiser, with its four nacelles, you could extend the hull up and down to give it height, and then reduce the wings to nothing, making the nacelles sit side by side, essentially making it the Constellation class. But no other class could be modified that way. At least, not without doing something totally kludgy with the pylons, like making them wrap around the body or something.
However, there have been requests for a unique Constellation class (aka, Picard's Stargazer) in the game. (A new ship, not a costume) This could have all of the above you mentioned as alternate costumes, since the mount points for the pylons would be top and bottom, instead of left and right.
Personally, I would like it, but none of those designs are canon. Of course, most of the alternate costumes in this game aren't canon either, but the point is, the BASE ship on which the alternate costumes are designed IS canon. The Constellation would be a possible jumping in point, but the devs would have to be convinced to do it. And then there are the arguments that Gene Roddenberry rejected nacelle designs that were single, or not paired left to right. (The Constellation, if you look closely, has two sets of paired nacelles, not a nacelle top and bottom)
... Then again, the Prometheus Alpha Section has paired nacelles top and bottom, when the saucer nacelles are extended...
