Design Proposal: Heavy Escort Retrofit (Akira Class)
Design Proposal: Heavy Escort Retrofit (Akira Class)
Mission Statement: To propose a viable potential configuration for a modernization of the Akira Class vessel that matches, as closely as possible, canon elements and balanced gameplay for Star Trek Online.
The Akira-class was designed by Alex Jaeger of Industrial Light & Magic in 1996. In parts of his Nemecek interview that were published in Star Trek: The Magazine, he stated that he created the Akira as a sort of "carrier/gunship," armed with fifteen torpedo launchers. Visual inspection of the hull and design drawings show all fifteen: ten on the ships weapons pod, one forward torpedo launcher over the deflector dish and also four flanking torpedo launchers on the saucer.
In June 2009 Jaeger commented about the overall design of the Akira-class on the web blog of Doug Drexler:
"Set nestled between the catamaran split secondary hulls the bridge is nicely protected. Just on either side of the bridge in a notch on top of the secondary hulls are the shield generators. This further protects the command unit of the ship since one of its duties is launching smaller craft, communication protection is a must. At the back of the bridge there are emissary docking hatches and just below that the circular hatch is the captain's lifeboat. The rear view at the back of the saucer is the main shuttle bay and shuttle control center. This area is also well protected tucked down between the hulls and below the weapons pod flanked by the Nacelles. This serves as a safe haven for the smaller craft in a fire fight and a calm entry point. Also in this protected center region are most of the sensor arrays for the transporters and communications with the remainder of the sensors atop the weapons pod. Moving forward the notch in the front of the saucer is the forward launch bay doors. This is for the fast exit of small craft into battle. There are extra shield generators on either side of this notch as this would be a target for enemy ships. Surrounding most of the saucer section is the phaser array strip. Also on the saucer there are flanking torpedo launchers. At the rear of the saucer are the impulse engines. Underneath is the deflector dish, 2 flanking phaser arrays and a forward facing torpedo launcher. You'll also notice that the Akira class utilizes the escape pods from the Sovereign Class, but the panel details more like the Galaxy class. That's because I imagined this ship was commissioned right before the "E" and served as a testbed for the new escape pods. At the rear is the weapon's pod with spreads of both photon and quantum torpedo launchers. And of course the warp nacelles. This overall design makes for a much more narrow side profile and a more friendly crew environment as the engineering folks are no longer in 'the bowels' of the ship :) Also the crew get a better view of their own ship as the split hull allows for more windows and a view of the bridge, something that's not very common in the previous ship designs."
*Minimum Rank: Vice Admiral
*Weapons: 4 Fore, 3 Aft
*Device Slots: 3
*Bridge Officer Stations: 1 Lieutenant Tactical; 1 Commander Tactical; 1 Lieutenant Commander Engineering; 1 Lieutenant Science; 1 Ensign Universal
*Console Upgrades: 3 Engineering, 1 Science, 4 Tactical
*Base Turn Rate: 15 Degrees per Second
*Impulse Modifier: 0.20
*Shield Modifier: 0.9
*Hull Strength: 30,000
*+15 Power to Weapons
*Broadside Torpedo: Launches a photon torpedo from a broadside perspective with a 90 degree firing arc.
*Unique Device: Bound, Launches 3 Peregrine class attack fighters; one minute cooldown (max. 6).
In retrospect, this should be replaced with 2x hangar bays.
Justification of Configuration Deviations:
*Bridge Officers: Lieutenant Commander Engineering reflects the necessity of additional operational personnel to facilitate the larger size of this ship, and to support the additional torpedo and fighter launch capabilities of the Heavy Escort Retrofit. Ensign universal reflects the diversity of function afforded by the larger size and crew of this vessel, combined with its ability to launch smaller vessels to support it, and the technological evolution of the Heavy Escort Retrofit.
*Device Slots: Additional device slot to reflect size proportionality. (Science console trade-off).
*Console Upgrades: Removal of science console to reflect the warship nature of this class. (Device slot trade-off). The three engineering console upgrades reflect the higher disposition toward engineering abilities on this ship as opposed to science.
*Fighter capabilities: Federation precedent set by availability of Scorpion fighters. Additionally, Federation carrier capabilities are under consideration as communicated by Al Rivera, Lead Designer for Star Trek Online in Dev Diary: DTNE, Part 3:
Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
[Edited for spelling. And again to suggest bays rather than devices.]
Now dont get me wrong, but whats the point of broadside torpedo on escort ? oh and thumb down from me for pets....there is enogh crap flying in the space already.
Give it some forward torpedo barrage and its good design.
My idea is for the abilities to take their cues from intentions by designer Alex Jaeger.
Thanks for your comment. :)
Where to begin...
Consoles, I guess. I sort of like the different setup in exchange for the torpedo idea. As for the torpedo Idea I'd make that a special power of the class, that upgrades the next torpedo attack. I'd suggest making all torpedo's fired for say 10-15 seconds 360 arc, so the rear and forward can fire at a given target. Of course this power would affect cool down of other torpedo abilities, and probably not be compatible with other torpedo upgrade powers.
As for the fighters, I'd say if they make it, it should be something similar to scorpion fighters and usable by anyone on anything, even klingons, thus would be craft-able or sold separately and use group specific fighters. Personally I think it should be kept seperately from the Akira.
I like the BO arrangement, and can see that, the only other modification I'd suggest is power. I'd say +10 weapons, +5 engines to reflect the newer engineer thrust.
its basically fine, but the whole through carrier idea did not make the final cut, and the final rendered model they used for filming dose not have front doors. the ship would have to be scaled up considerably for a hypothetical front opening to launch fighters as large as Peregrines
I think a tier 5 Akira refit would be best made as sort of a hybrid cruiser/escort, give it a lt.com eng slot, a high crew and a above average for an escort hull.
I'd rather they hold off on refitting my favourite ship in Star Trek for Tier 6 because despite my want for one now I don't want it to become obsolete when tier 6 comes out.
Of course another thread asking for a Fed carrier lol. No to the fighters part bad idea. Giving it broadside torpedo ports that fire to the right and left of the ship, would make that escort way too op. One of the reasons why the escort is not insanely op. Is the fact that it is extremely limited on weapons firing left to right or aft for that matter. Most escorts have the real firepower facing forward.
Make it closer to the Klingon Battlecruisers in terms of turnrate and hull.
The Akira is roughly the size of the Vor'cha and probably geared for combat to a similar degree.
So a good deal of Engineering with a decent hull would be perfect IMO.
The ship has several torpedo launchers on the hull, some kind of Spread 3 with a larger firing arc would be great.
