Turrets - Worth it?
New to the game, hi.

Got a turrent on my first ship, switched it out for my torpedo launcher so I have 2 single phaser arrays fore and the turret aft.

So far its great, I realise the power is lower but whether i'm facing the enemy or side-on i can continously fire all of my weapons (from behind i'm boned but i dont worry about that as it never happens)

My question is are turrets worth it later on? low damage but impressive rate of fire and arcs compared to thinner arcs and more power but having to become more manouverable.

it greatly depends on your style of play and what your flying. with klingon carriers imho i'd say its a must have since your turn rate as about the same as a super oil tanker. have used them on rear slots on escorts to great effect. cruisers and sci vessels are a mixed bag based on boff skill layout.

Canon rapid fire would help with a turret boat. It really depends on what ship you're flying and your playstyle. Escorts are built for canons, beam arrays are better for sci and cruisers.

Turrets are the only weapons you can put in the rear slots that can fire forward, maximizing your alpha and frontal damage potential, which also goes hand in hand with using torpedo launchers in front, but the maximal damage for a slower ship is most often in the broadside, which is better served by single beams.

It depends mostly on your ship and what you [character] can do with it really.

My play style is tactical officer, i usually am the first to rush in guns blazing so - so far its been very useful being able to fire 2 beams and a turret, then i'll turn sideways which with all my arcs can still fire to full potential from the port or starboard.

its just if i get taken from behind lol, thats when i'm boned - as all i have is the turret. but rarely do i get in that position unless im overwhelmed.

but i suppose an escort or smaller, speedier fighter might be more useful with turrets.

There are a few specific uses for turrets but they aren't generally good to equip as they're so underpowered.

Instead of doing a beam broadside I would love to use all turrents without sacrificing DPS. I love equipping a star cruiser with all turrets but damage output simply stinks.

If they have two beams in the front and a single turret in the back, it's a starter ship (Miranda, B'rel, etc).

I fly a turret boat right now. Sovereign with 6 turrets, 1 dual beam bank, 1 forward torp.

It's effective. I sacrifice some broadside damage as opposed to a beam boat, but I make up for it by having a very even 360 firing arc, lower power usage compared to the same number of beams, and a fast firing rate. Paired with EPtW, cannon rapid fire, and various damage buffs, it can be quite mean. It's also very useful against small, maneuverable craft like fighters. I find it's great for tanking, especially on PvE. I can fire off a cannon scatter volley to get the NPCs attention, and then i can worry about keeping myself alive instead of keeping my enemy in my firing arcs, giving my teammates a lot more time to do their thing. Haven't flown it much in PvP, but the few times I did it seemed effective.

Edit: also, the turrets may have a lower DPS, but the fact that they all can fire at the same time at the same target no matter where they are makes them quite potent. "Death by 1000 cuts" as it were.
