Search Your Feelings: Preferred Input Method

So, after a little discussion about keybinds in other threads, it makes me wonder: What is the PvP Communities preferred input method for gameplay?

I have heard a number of players mention the Naga, the G-15, or other gaming-specific peripherals that aid in their gameplay... Some players fly strictly with the 'click-it to win-it' approach, using only the mouse for everything... Some find a nice balance of mouse and keyboard... And I get the distinct impression that I'm in a small minority that uses, primarily, the keyboard...

So, I put to you, fellow PvP-ers, how do you play? (You don't have to go into detail on builds or anything, I am simply curious as to how people achieve their personal level of excellence... Maybe I've been doing it wrong... :D )

My answer: I fly WASD, with a few keybinds on convenient keys around WASD for my left hand, and run all of my powers on a 3-line tray, using the right hand to run the Numpad (with Ctrl and Alt modifiers for Tray 2 and Tray 3, respectively), there are also a few keybinds worked into specific keys on the Numpad (things like rotating my EPtS, or my Tac Teams on Escorts, etc.)

About the only thing I use the mouse for is looking around or changing camera positioning.

Oh, and since it seems relevant, by using the Numpad, I also am within reach of the arrow keys with my right thumb for directional shield distribution, and my PTT key is the Right Ctrl button (which, occasionally, causes me to inadvertently fire off unintentional or 'wrong' powers... Much to the amusement of myself and my teammates. )

I use the G-15 for the re-distro in space only and auto-fire of primary shot on ground but I click or use "normal" functions as is. I steer with KB, I click powers with mouse, I do do have QT bound to a mouse thumb button for better control. I have tried multiple powers to one key and found it to be hit or miss.

Hi Red,

I almost use the default steering for my ship, "WASD". Mainly because as of how the engine works, and you are dealing with a specific arc, even with an escort (which is what I fly) doesnt require the precision that you can reach with using your mouse for steering your ship. (On top of that I am using the newest Magic Mouse, if you know this nice piece of equipment you know that you cannot use the right click unless you lift your fore finger which wouldnt make this an ideal mouse except for moving my camera. lol)

And I navigate with my mouse to click new Targets or move the camera if needed.

Furthermore have I made my 'Tab' for Full impulse toggle.

Keybinds;

Space for Energy Weaps
Alt for additional abilities or such.
Rshift for Torps and/or anything related.

1 2 3 and 4 are obviously for power transferring to another system :p

Q and E for Throttle change.

On top if this I make good use of H < > / \ T etcetera. And probably some other keys as well. :p

Well, thats how i play :)

I think I got most of my functions bounded to something. I think thats Haxellent. Seriously in a pvp match, my laptop keyboard really gets to suffer. Im still surprised that my spacebar didnt fly off lol. But I guess Macbook Pro's are kinda sturdy :D

Yeah, I've got these on: / , * , - , and + on the Numpad, works very well (once I got used to it, LOL)... I just want to say that I HATE the fact that we cannot use '9' or '0' on the Numpad, however... That is very, very inconvenient for someone that plays like I do... I have to reach over and use the main keyboard 9 and 0 to fire off anything in those slots.

Yeh that numpad thingy sucks :(
I also have to make due with what i have on this puny laptop keyboard as well. (No numpad :O) But there is also a great advantage over time, since the keys are so dense (and my fingers arent that big) its really good for the reaction time :p

I find myself tapping keys faster than that the game can handle my requests. Its frustrating to say the least :C
Oh and I often think Im getting RSI in my left hand. lol

But yeh those * . / etc thingies for powertransfer looks kinda complicated to me, but in my personal experience it just takes a small time before you dont even think about it anylonger. Same for all keybinds. I constantly added new binds to my bindfile in time. Not all at once. That gave me the advantage of learning them one by one. :)

Last thing i wanted to say is that having a properly and logically set up tray (number 3) is never a bad thing.
I think i still put my abilities on the same spots since i begun running escorts. Made a few adjustments here and there, but at a certain point you know where the most logical places are :)

(This was actually when I didnt know about keybinds at all, manually clicking everything with my mouse, a logically set up ability tray really helped me with that in the long term. And even with binds now, its a lot easier to 'manage' your bind textfile (I think I can actually remember without checking where are my abilities are placed right as we speak. 0 0, 0 1 etc.

Steer with mouse -rightbutton downpress
Cam mode- no mouse press
scrollwheelmouse up - accelerate
scrollwheelmouse down -deaccelerate

keybinds asdf target player 1 2 3 4

qwert fghzxcvb -keybinds
space to fire weapons/sometimes even torps depending on how needed they are
+ epts, epts, rebalance shields, hiy, bo, whatever my current escort have
sometimes I have them manually :)

I prefer to never use my mouse for anything other then steer my ship, look around, switch chat tab.

Sometimes tho Im being lazy or just something and click a power with mouse. :D

And btw control +1 takes so much more concentration to use then just R, T, B try it!

You know, this actually makes your videos make a LOT more sense... I've often wondered exactly how you had it setup, as I noticed that you seemed to have super-sensitive camera control, and I knew you had to be running a lot of keybinds... This just makes it comprehensible to my poor, twisted psyche' :D

I use a combination of joypad, keyboard and mouse.

The mouse I use for extended/long-distance navigation, camera control and selection of targets.

The joypad I use for finer navigation and combat, with directional shield distribution linked to the left analogue stick (along with fire/interact when pressed).

The keyboard I use for any binds I couldn't fit on the joypad, like evasive, shield battery, power allocation and defense buffs I don't use on a regular basis (like subspace field modulator).
