Combat Impulse engine questions
I am bit confused about how these interact with certain things, specifically abilities like Starship Engine Efficiency.

If you have that skill maxed, and you have your engine power set to 25, will the combat engines benefit from the low power?

There is a pretty good guide to the ins and outs of impulse engines.

Of particular interest:

Engine Power .............100....75.....50.....25

Hyper Impulse Engine ....29.78..23.80..17.84..11.86
Impulse Engine ..........27.13..22.69..18.28..13.86
Combat Impulse Engine ...24.17..21.52..18.86..16.21
Which indicates flight speed for each engine at various power levels.

Thank you for the quick reply. I read though the whole guide, very helpful.

In my experience, at higher levels, Combat IMpulse Engines become irrelevant, as it is always a good idea to specc into the Efficiency and Performance skills, and your power level gets too high to benefit from the Combat Engines.

I would really like to see a revamp of Impulse Engines. Combat Impulse Engines could simply have a higher turn rate in turn for a lower speed, and Hyper-Impulse Engines a higher speed in turn for a lower turn rate. That way, it's easily understood which of the engines you should use.

Even with Efficient an and Performance skills topped off, you won't get much more then then 45-50 Engine Subsystem Power with the standard power setting of 25. To get much higher you need Efficient Captain train, Warp Core Theorist trait, Efficient traitted BOFFs and/or Plamsa Inject Engineering Consoles (+Engine Power) to get Engine Subsystem power into the range that Hyper Impulse Engines start out do Combat Impulse Engines.

Bear in mind the above assumes you in mostly in combat, and stay with engine power setting of 25 that most people use. If you, at times, tend to change power setting profile for higher power and/or use Emergency Power to Enginer or Batteries to "Get the Hell out of Dodge", then a Hyper Impulse Engine is definitely a better choice. At high engine power settings (75+) a Hyper Impulse Engine vastly out speeds any other type of Impulse Engine.
