Tac in an Advanced Heavy Cruiser Refit

Hello everyone!

I am a Tac officer. I currently fly the Defiant-R, but would like to try something different. I have heard that the Excelsior is the closest cruiser you can get to a escort so I was thinking of trying it out. However, before I go spend money and time on this I thought I would see what you guys think. Is it a viable thing? What are some good builds? That sort of thing. I have seen he Excelsior do some crazy damage, but also tank like crazy so what do you guys think? Thanks in advance :)

Apparently the rage is Cannons up front with Turrets aft, use CRF off of the LTC Tactical slot and DEM off of your CMDR Engineer slot.

Not sure of the specifics, but that's because I'm an engineer. I will say that it has a ton of Engineering slots available, so it can definitely run a hefty tank. Not as many personnel as a Star Cruiser or Galaxy, but more than a Tactical Captain is used to.

Hm, that is interesting. I wouldn't have thought that. Thanks! Any other ideas?

Well, from an Engineering point of view, unless you have one of those ungodly purple tactical BOff's with Beam Overload III or Target Shield Subsystems III, the ship's worth is debatable.

It has great turn-rate, but suffers in crew size. It has a ton of Engineering slots, but the Ensign slot is almost unneeded in my opinion. The best LTC Tactical power (and the one that I use) for my tank setup is Attack Pattern Delta II.

I use the same setup on the Excelsior that I use on my Galaxy-X: 1 Phaser BA and 2 DBB with a Quantum Torp fore, 3 Phaser BA and a Quantum Torp aft. I have High Yield Torpedo I, Beam Overload II, and Attack Pattern Delta II on the Tactical, with Directed Energy Modulation and 2 Emergency Power to Shields III spread across my CMDR and LTC Engineer. For Science I use Hazard Emitters II and Science Team I.

Consoles are Field Generator (+% Cap), Neutronium Plate, EPS Relay, and RCS Accelerator for Engineering; 2 Directed Energy Manifold and Warhead Yield for Tactical; Hazard Emitters and Assimilated Console for Science.

This is just my tank build for my Engineer, so I doubt it would work well for you, but maybe you can get something out of it.

EDIT: Added my consoles, thought it might be helpful.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it :)

I actually have a BOff with Beam Overload 3

This is what I was thinking of doing, after reading what you said, and my own thoughts :)

Tactical:
Tactica Team 1
Attact Pattern Delta 1
Beam Overload 3

Eng:
Ens. Engineering Team 1
Lt. EPtS 1, RSP 1
Cmd. EPtA 1, EPtS 2, AuxtSIF 2, DEM 3

Sci:
Hazard Emitters 1
TSS 2

Then I was going to do 8 beam arrays.

Consoles:
Eng: 2 EPS flow regulators, +35% to shields, Then nuetronium alloy, or +13% to shield regen.
Tac: 3 +26 to beam arrays
Sci: Borg, and not sure, maybe +18 to deflector field

Power would be 125, 50, 50, 25 (If that is possible, not sure)

Lucky you! I got a purple science officer with Viral Matrix III (at least I think I did, otherwise how did my Sci BOff get it?).

Setup seems solid; if you do decide to go for it, post the results.

Yep! :p Good for you too! I looked it up, Viral Marix is only available through a rare BOff.

Ok, thanks! I think I will go for it. One last thing though, Borg, or Aegis set? I was thinking of doing all Borg with Aegis engines. What do you think?

As far as that goes, I am getting schooled at the moment as well.

I have been running all Aegis on my G-X, but in the "Tanking a Dreadnought" thread I'm being told that Covariants have taken a bit of a hit, and that the Assimilated Regenerative Shield might be your best bet. As far as the Engines and the Deflector go, I'm not too sure.

Guess it would depend on how much you need the skills versus at what power level you run your engines at (the Aegis are Hyper-Impulses, which run more efficiently over 50 IIRC). The Assimilated Subtranswarp Drives don't have that modifier, which might make them more worthwhile to have at or below 50 power.

The Deflector is always a matter of skills and powers, so pick the one that compliments you the best.

Something else was that apparently the Borg Tractor Beam isn't that great? Again, that's what I was hearing in another thread, not personal experience, so take it with salt. Really you want at least three pieces of the Assimilated set out of the four to get the 2 Defensive passives.

once apon a time.

back in beta and after beta. we took a Soviegn class, (me) and we loaded turrets on it. (all 8 slots) and it was a tank and a murderer.

now all you need is to spec into what is needed for the spec to operate. it could destroy a Klingon Dreadnough in less than 30 secs.

this toon has sense be deleted so i cant remember the specs and techs.
