New to STO, looking for advice!

Hey all,

Im new to Star Trek Online but not to MMO's. Ive been doing some reading and played the game a bit and the idea of tactical appeals to me. I want to get involved in pvp and pve. However, ive done some reading and i always hear about science or engineering hybrids but never about tactical. Is tactical a bad choice for a pvper/pver?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Not at all!!! I fly a tactical as my main, and love it!!! Tactical hybrids do work, but mostly you will get the most out of your tac in an escort. However, I have seen it work well in cruisers so if you like cruisers, go for it!!! Tactical is a great way to go!!! You have a lot of fun killing things :p

Welcome to STO!

The forums are friendly as long as you stay out of Star Trek Online Discussion... there is just a bunch of old players like me that cry about everything STO...

Now on to your question:

In short, yes a tact hybrid could work well if you spec your player right. I know, that is so general.. but here is so much involved.

For example: if you are an engineer and you choose an escort, there are plenty of skill sets you can choose to boost your tact power, but as an engineer you will receive abilities a Tact play would not get. My favorite is "Miracle Worker." If you're about to die, especially in PvP, you can use this ability and fly off to safety, which helps a lot! If you are a Tact Officer, you will get "Go Down Fighting" instead, this will increase your dps but weaken your ship.

All in all, the key is teaming up with players with good abilities that compliment yours. If you are a Tact with weak defenses, having a good Sci ship for healing will do you a lot of good!

Happy hunting!

Dropped by, read your post, read the answers, and decided that I had nothing more to add apart from:

WELCOME TO STO...

Welcome to STO!

As for Tacticals, they are undeniably best in Escorts. They are at their worst in Cruisers, save for the Excelsior. They also perform alright in science vessels geared more for damage than control.

Tactical captains have an ability called 'tactical initiative'. It recools all tactical bridge officer abilities faster. In a science ship you will have 2 or 3 of those, same for cruiser. In an escort you will have 7 or 8.
Escorts also have the best ability to do burst damage, more damage in the first 5 seconds, but pausing to refire so same damage over a 10 second period. Tactical captains have the best abilities to enhance that burst damage to kill most enemies in 5 seconds when fully buffed. (I have seen good tactical captains take out a borg cube in 5 seconds solo, but if it takes much longer they get in trouble quick.) An engineer in a cruiser can tank a cube forever, but will take longer to kill it. Which do you prefer?

Eventually many of us try all 3 professions. New changes coming will allow you to change from science ship to cruiser to escort without penalty.
