On the Respec Issue

Reasons why Respecs are needed
1) Various ship types (escorts, cruisers, science) gain larger benefits from the various skills to fly effectively, even in the new skill system.
Ex: Emitters are important in a science ship primarily, Attack Patterns in an escort, etc.
2) Solo play and group play have different skill priorities.
Ex: Armor Reinforcements is a waste when soloing, but vs borg a life saver.
3) Boff skills can be changed, these are greatly effected by captain skills which should also be able to change.
Ex: Change from using Gravity Well & Aecton Field to Tekkens Rift & Reverse Shield Polarity as my high rank boff skills.
4) There is a lack of documentation on just how much of an effect the various skills have on various things.
Ex: How much longer will my viral matrix last with Subspace Decompiler at 6, vs 9? And how much will that effect my target shield subsystem duration?
5) Patches will at some point change things that are effected by skills, this can change a player’s desire to have a skill.
Ex: Gravity Well’s damage is reduced by 10%, I now regret having a ton of skills effecting it.
6) Some players enjoy trying out various builds, even off the wall ones. This can be a large part of a players enjoyment of the game.
Ex: I tried a 3 front torp shield stripping sci ship for PvE, it was a blast. I probably respec (in any game really) probably about once every 40-50 hours played.
7) It has become standard practice in a western MMO to change your skill choices. This is for a reason.
Ex: World of ********, Rift, etc….
8) Prevents P2W outcry against people who respec into the ‘flavor of the month’.
Ex: Shield builds popular this week? I spec for full shield stripping!
9) PvP and PvE have different skill priorities.
Ex: Shield tanking vs hull tanking as the most obvious.
10) Human error.
Ex: Everyone makes mistakes, that’s why you can retrieve an item you sell!
11) Has the potential to cost you players.
Ex: This will be a deal breaker for some players.
12) Sheer number of variables from boff skills, weapon procs, etc that can change the desirability of a skill.
Ex: Flow Capacitors effects a weapon type as well as several tactical and science boff abilities, and a ship ability!
13) Burden of knowledge required for good skill choices.
Ex: Until you have played a character for the majority of the game it is difficult to know exactly which boff abilities, ship type, and weapon type you will want to use.
14) Does not make logical sense.
Ex: If it is available in the Cstore and not cosmetic there should be an equivalent available via in game means. You can retrain a boff’s abilities, you can buy ships, get pets, etc. This is the only non cosmetic thing I can think of that is Cstore only.

I’m sure someone with enough time could refute each and every one of these. But the fact is right now on Tribble you can buy a respec in the Cstore only. This makes it look like nothing more than a money grab. Some money grabs are understandable to a community, like fancy ships and pets, especially when there are alternatives that can be earned via in game means. A basic game function, however, is not understandable and will cost at least one player, myself. Nearly half of my enjoyment from this game is derived from making, and testing out interesting skill builds along with the ships to complement them. A simple dilitium cost, between 2k-12k, or energy credit cost of 100k-500k would be acceptable to me. I can foresee many people playing this game, getting to VA level spending some cash in the C-Store, only to realize they want a different build and having to decide between buying a respec or something FUN, and instead they buy nothing.

So cryptic, this is it. I may not have spent as much as others on this game, but I am currently a loyal customer look forward to the F2P conversion and getting as many friends as I can to give it an honest try, and I’m begging you not to make respec C-Store only. I really enjoy this game, and will continue to enjoy it, but I will not spend real cash on a respec, and at some point that will cause me to stop playing.

They probably know most of this stuff. That's probably why they are charging as much as they do:(. I'm not that smart but it seems to me that they could make a lot more money charging a low, low price. How much does a respec cost them to "produce"?

But then again, maybe it doesn't matter. The fun of making respecs was dealt a pretty nasty blow by this awful "skill tree" anyway.

I havn't done anything c-store wise on tribble, how much are they charging for a respec?

Right now its only 10 Cpoints to help with the testing but that is a temporary thing, pretty sure it was over 500 before that happened though. Which is insulting.

Before they lowered it to 10 for testing purposes, it was iirc 780 per respec.

WTF?!?! seriously?
If thats true. I quit. I've stayed through so many game breaking bugs, exploits, & ect. but if they think i',m spending that much cash to respec they are flat out STUPID. I will quit & spend my money elsewhere. What a screw you to their players.100- c points i could (maybe) see. 50 sounds about right. after all, it's not like it's Cryptic actually DOING anything.

Respec really shouldn't cost more than 100 points maximum.

Archived Post 11-27-2011 07:32 AM

Respec should cost in game currency, not Cpoint only.

Just to be sure I took a look at Capitain Wilhelms C-Store changes spreadsheet, it states the same 780 points I remembered. So unless they changed their mind, this might be the price when this goes live.

50-100 points is btw quite unrealistic when you see that it's currently on live already 400 per respec.

But on holodeck you can get respecs through other means than a single expensive purchase.
