Borg Red Alerts - recommended level

I've been playing for a couple of months now, various builds, and am currently playing a Commander level 8 Engineer.

When I first started I entered a Borg Red Alert having no idea what to expect and was useless.

I'd like to give it another shot and actually be useful.

What's a recommended level range to try again? Is it different for different sectors?

It is different for two sectors. Zeta Andromedae and Orellius. I wouldn't suggest either of those before at or at least near the level cap, and I'd suggest getting geared up a bit before Orellius, that one can be pretty brutal.

For every other sector, the enemies are level 45. You get adjusted to that level, which makes up for the fact that your equipment and skills are weak, but not for the fact that a higher tier ship has more equipment slots and skill slots available. If you end up with a strong team, commander level is enough to hold your own. To be safe, captain might be a better idea, since there's not a huge difference between a tier 4 and tier 5 ship.

Thanks for that. I'll level up and give it a shot

Any general tips?

Avoid tactical cubes, and when you're fighting the boss, stay away from the ends. Kill regeneration probes and plasma balls, ignore the other probe types unless you're getting overwhelmed (in which case it's usually not going to be a kill anyway).

Make sure to bring kinetic and plasma resist powers and gear to avoid being oneshotted. Activate brace for impact and if possible aux to inertial dampers when you see the boss preparing a torpedo spread. That should let you survive long enough to fire off heals after that. By staying alive alone you stay usefull, since you can keep up dps.
Make sure you are teamed with the others, so they can easily see when you are in distress andbe able to help.

Great!

Really looking forward to it

i recorded 2 red alert runs a few days ago

you may notice that in the second half of the video we did manage to beat B'Ger with only 3 Players.

Don't be afraid to enter a Red Alert while you are low level, those missions are supposed to be XP boost zones, just make sure to stick with your team and shoot at what they shoot.

Just don't go sightseeing or try to beat the Tactical Cube on your own ;P

If some players have a problem with the presence of low level players in these zones they can hit the warp out button.

Oh and make sure to add the "REDALERT" chat channel to your chat list -> primary channel to call out Borg Red Alerts.

If you want to get some useful info, check out the REDALERT thread in my sig.

Also, generally if you want to survive Borg encounters, get yourself a shield with the [Pla] bonus (20% plasma resistance), get some armor that protects against kinetic and get another armor console that protects against plasma energy.

The science ability Hazard Emitters is highly recommended, and when it comes to fighting the Borg Command Ship, the Unimatrix 0047 (B'ger), stay away from either end of the thing, which is where it spawns deadly plasma Energy Bolts.

Priority targets are Plasma Energy Bolts, if you shoots them down, your team will stay alive to dish out the damage, secondary targets are Regen probes, makes sure you take them down at all costs because if you don't they'll heal up B'ger and try to target the same shield facing on B'ger as the rest of your team.

Before getting to B'ger, never take on a Tactical Cube, it wastes time and always go for the groups of 2 Cubes over other groups as they're easier to take down than a group of 1 cube and spheres, probes.

That depends. If you are on a team that knows what it's doing you can take on the Tac Cubes for huge XP rewards... When teamed with an escort (and me in my cruiser to tank it) 2 are enough to kill it in 2-3 minutes. Depending on attack vector you can kill it's escorts with it's explosion or you kite the escorts away kill them first before getting in tac cube weapons range.

Aye but unless you know for sure you're in a good team and everyone's high level, then.

A. What's the point in the extra xp if you're all VA or LG?

B. It wastes time, you don't gain anything more for taking on the Tactical Cube (If max level).
