Heretic Discusses Starbases and Territory Control
Chat log from DOFFJOBS on 1-15-12. Credit to BrooklynKnight, who is legitimately the most knowledgeable STO player in the game on accolades, if that's your thing.
(1:19:07 AM) Heretic: Critical successes on military offensives, mostly.
(1:19:24 AM) Balash: Hullo Heretic
(1:19:34 AM) Heretic: 'Morning all
(1:19:43 AM) BrooklynKnight: wait, that's not THE Heretic is it?
(1:19:43 AM) tmanook: Hey
(1:19:48 AM) Enterprise2001: wow... no wonder I haven't seen any then...
(1:19:51 AM) Matthian: usurper!
(1:20:08 AM) Triangulum_Phoenix: no imposter
(1:20:28 AM) BrooklynKnight: WIN!
(1:20:38 AM) Heretic: It's my standard account, so I am just doffing up an Andorian-only, Nausicaan-only, Gorn-only and Orion-only crew, just to see how hard it is.
(1:20:42 AM) Eklinaar: Even Heretic wants to know where the good DOff assignments are.
(1:20:45 AM) BrooklynKnight: I just hit Critical on a Support DV and got 3 Refugee's and a Purple!
(1:20:52 AM) PatricianVetinari: Hiya Heretic!
(1:20:59 AM) spessmehreen: nice nice
(1:21:07 AM) PatricianVetinari: Neat.
(1:21:11 AM) Heretic: I am dropping the number of refugees on support successes, btw, so enjoy them while you can. ;-)
Then things got interesting....
(1:31:49 AM) Heretic: Haven't posted much on starbases yet. It's still in very early stages of development. Meaning, I haven't even started whiteboarding it, it's mostly been discussions and in my brain.
(1:31:52 AM) Enterprise2001: <cough> crafting? </cough>
(1:32:10 AM) Heretic: (Since I will be shifting over to focus on starbases, fleet advancement and territory control)
(1:32:23 AM) tmanook: intersting
(1:32:36 AM) Naldoran: Fleet starbases and territory control... sounds like a dream combination.
(1:32:42 AM) Heretic: I would not say Science will never have 20 hr assignments...there are a lot of things we'd like to put in, but time is tight.
(1:32:42 AM) BrooklynKnight: missions through the wormhole would be nice
(1:32:48 AM) Heretic: Not sure when we'll get to it.
(1:32:54 AM) PatricianVetinari: We DOffers are gonna lose our DOff God?!?! Oh Nose! lol
(1:33:16 AM) Naldoran: I would love it if where starbases are actually matter, instead of just being a in a pocket dimension or something like that.
(1:33:18 AM) Heretic: Borticus will be doing crafting --- the crafting revamp will probably leverage the duty officer system.
(1:33:24 AM) PatricianVetinari: How long does it take (ballpark) to make a DOff mission?
(1:33:38 AM) Naldoran: Starbases and territory control... yum yum
(1:33:50 AM) KnightTemplar_99: I'd love to have a Forum post somewhere where we can get some of your ideas on Starbases (as well as post our ideas).
(1:33:56 AM) Triangulum_Phoenix: borticus?
(1:34:05 AM) Triangulum_Phoenix: thats the J man
(1:34:12 AM) Heretic: Making a duty officer assignment that does nothing special and uses standard rewards and mechanics...10 minutes. Making one that uses unique rewards or new mechanics, 1-2 days for me, longer for
(1:34:14 AM) Heretic: anyone else.
(1:34:17 AM) Aevn: Disagee, there should be no risk of losing a Fleet Starbase
(1:34:31 AM) PatricianVetinari: Cool. Thanks. I was always wondering.
(1:34:35 AM) Heretic: Starbases will matter, if I have anything to say about it. Though I do have bosses.
(1:34:42 AM) Aevn: disagree even ;P
(1:34:53 AM) Naldoran: If starbases matter all the fleet will love you.
(1:34:53 AM) Heretic: The current plan is that starbases will matter a lot - some at first, then a whole lot later.
And later he mentioned something worth noting, probably worth a comment or two...
(1:35:41 AM) Heretic: I've learned never to say never, re: poker...too many things change way, way too fast in development.
(1:35:55 AM) Heretic: Mini-games are very expensive to develop, though.
(1:36:01 AM) Technolocke: Just so I don't get cross waiting, what's the likelyhood of a military base mission popping in any given sector
(1:36:20 AM) BrooklynKnight: I don't get what that means, arent you all on salary? You mean time expensive?
(1:36:39 AM) tritium4ever: expensive on the time budget, presumably
(1:36:49 AM) tritium4ever: everyone only has so many waking hours
(1:36:53 AM) BrooklynKnight: sounds like you guys need a TARDIS
(1:36:59 AM) HooperScooper: fortify khazan fed
(1:37:03 AM) Heretic: Opportunity cost --- meaning, we have x number of people working y number of hours in z specialities, and there are fifty things we have to prioritize.
(1:37:05 AM) Naldoran: And minigames don't add a ton of playtime. Something like the Doff system certainly does.
(1:37:21 AM) Technolocke: will there ever be a way to track chain mission progress in game?
(1:37:30 AM) tmanook left the room.
(1:37:33 AM) BrooklynKnight: are you kidding me? do you how how many thousands of hours people spend playing poker?
(1:37:36 AM) Enterprise2001: I would imagine something like PvP poker could be played a VERY long time for long periods of time
(1:37:45 AM) Heretic: We've talked about it, but it will be tricky and expensive and require significant new code to track chains. I would like to see it eventually, however.
(1:37:52 AM) BrooklynKnight: I'm not a huge fan of poker to be honest, but....lots of players would spend lots of time on it.
(1:38:14 AM) BrooklynKnight: Well here's to hoping.
(1:38:15 AM) Enterprise2001: wouldn't surprise me if people subscribe for the poker alone... :-)
(1:38:28 AM) Matthian: wouldnt poker lead to age issues in game rating?
(1:38:30 AM) Eklinaar: I know a few poker addicts who would play it a lot if the UI was good.
(1:38:32 AM) Heretic: The issue with something like poker is...do you want poker first, or starbases, territory control, department heads, first officers, functional ship interiors?
(1:38:44 AM) BrokenMirror: Poker would be fine as long as real money isnt involved
(1:38:47 AM) Technolocke: well if I didn't have a spreadsheet, I'd be flipping mad trying to figure these out. lol
(1:38:48 AM) Naldoran: yeah, poker goes last on that list.
(1:39:00 AM) pfcJOKER: I got a great Tracking system - Alt-tab - docs.google.com - doff tracking spreadsheet :P
(1:39:07 AM) Enterprise2001: <pencils in "bigger dev team"> :-)
(1:39:21 AM) BrooklynKnight: I wanna play STO on my iphone! how about that!
(1:39:25 AM) BrooklynKnight: just kidding
(1:39:29 AM) Naldoran: I hope F2P brings in big revenue so you can hire more hands to help out.
(1:39:34 AM) ullas: reading scrollback id really like to see in-game assignment chain tracking too excel gets old
(1:39:35 AM) tritium4ever: while i do enjoy poker, ultimately i'm playing STO to play STO, not to play poker. it's one of those things that would be nice, but isn't really a priority (from a player perspective)
(1:39:42 AM) -Fala-: i give up 30 min of rotating brige and NO military base >.< thats just .... sick
(1:39:53 AM) Heretic: We have more reqs open for developers, but it takes on avera 3 months to find someone suitable for a position, then 3 months of training before they are an asset to the team rather than a training dra
(1:39:55 AM) Heretic: drain
(1:40:03 AM) Aevn: didn't someone mention Kal Toh?
(1:40:20 AM) BrooklynKnight: to paraphrase someone from another forum
(1:40:20 AM) Enterprise2001: I like the idea because I like poker AND it's canon
(1:40:25 AM) Matthian: i have patience with cryptic and new content - good stuff takes time
(1:40:25 AM) Heretic: I can't say numbers, but let's just say preliminary numbers for F2P is highly encouraging.
(1:40:29 AM) Naldoran: Yeah, especially when "huge Star Trek Fan" is on the job requirements list.
(1:40:43 AM) BrooklynKnight: The US is in the biggest unemployment period in decades, how hard is it to find qualified programmers? are the wrong people applying or something?
(1:40:46 AM) ullas: based on early access?
(1:40:48 AM) Eklinaar: I'm glad to hear that.
(1:41:18 AM) timotheus.d: most of the unemployed ppl are woorking poor/unskilled.
(1:41:26 AM) BrooklynKnight: that's not true
(1:41:36 AM) Naldoran: That's a debate for another time and place.
(1:41:37 AM) Technolocke: Any chance GPL will become a useful currency?
(1:41:38 AM) Aevn: one does not simply walk into Cryptic Studios
(1:41:38 AM) Heretic: I can't speak for programmers, but for designers, it is surprisingly hard, especially to find experienced people who won't take not three months, but six months to get up to speed.
I'll wait to see the execution, but anytime a DEV is focused on Starbases and territory control, I'm interested.
Pipe dream? Maybe. Personally, I hope the rewards from territorial control allow fleets to craft unique items not available otherwise. Territory control via pvp only works, IMO, if it is attractive to the broader community, not just the hard core PvP community. In that context, it means the rewards for territory control must worth the effort by the average fleet.
