Raptors vs BoP - Not sure which to use

Both raptors and birds of prey seem to be DPS ships, but after looking at Spidermitch's ship chart, neither seems to be strictly better at what I want to do.

Raptors look like they tend to have an extra weapon mount, an extra tactical mod, and more dedicated tactical BOff seats. Those all make it seem like the ship that would do the most DPS, but I plan to use dual or dual heavy cannons fore & turrets aft (or something like that), which means the extra turning radius of birds of prey would be very useful. Having a BoP's universal BOff slots is also very appealing too, just for flexibility's sake.

Can anyone explain the two classes' intended roles, and/or which one would be more suited for cannons' limited firing arc?

Thanks in advance from a newbie pilot.

Bird of Prey = squishy hull under shielded Klingon multi-tool adaptible to any build concept.

Raptor = Defiant -R clone in design and layout without the good centerline turn point.

Does that mean I should go with a BoP & just get used to being a very squishy glass cannon?

BoPs can be really good for dps, but compare that with raptors & escorts ARE very good for dps.

The mystique associated with universal BOffs is obviously drawing you in. Before you choose a BoP might I sugegst you look very carefully at exactly what it is you want form it. Here aresome of the things you lose:

- hit points (quite a few)
- bridge officer powers (more flexible but less total)
- A rear weapon

In my experience BoPs work best in PvP because the universal slots do allow you to stack some awesome combinations for spike damage and the battel cloak can give you the opportunity to use it.

If you have a very clear idea why you want the universal slots and what you are going to do with that (instead of the tactical ones from the raptor) then give it a try.

BOP. All day. Every day.
Engineers cannot get a good DPS BOP build, but Sci's and Tacs can.

Kaiser, it's more that the extra turning power is really drawing me in, considering my planned primary weapons are so position dependent. The universal BOffs are just the icing on the cake. I'm definitely not set on a bird of prey, however. The extra rear weapon slot is definitely a loss I don't want to take, but since that slot would be a turret, which I'm told has the least DPS in the game, is it worth it to have that turret at the expense of spending less time shooting something with a cannon due to having a lower turn radius?

Staran, my Klingon is a tactical officer, so I'm covered there.

Is the turning rate that profoundly different? If you really feel it is then go for that.

The biggest factor is what you want to do with it. For PvP I can see the advantages, for PvE, and especially STFs it really doesn;t matter. As I said in another thread in here I use DHC on a Neg and don;t have a problem pointing my ship at the enemy and firing the guns. The only exception to that is PvP where is is a significant problem.

Edit:

These are just my personal opinions about what is best. What I also believe passionately is that you should go with whatver you think is coolest. Ultimately it is your game to enjoy!

In my experience the Raptor has more bang for the buck, But the BoP has the Battlecloack so it survives a little better.

I don't know if it is or isn't worth it, Kaiser. As I said in the original post, I'm new to STO. My only experience has been Federation cruisers thus far, and they turn like a brick, sometimes making it difficult to even point both fore and aft beams at my targets (though that's probably just something that will come with more practice). As for whether I'd do more PvP or PvE, I imagine I'd go with different ships for that. Perhaps I should fly a raptor for PvE, and a bird of prey for PvP.

Amidoinitright, which one do you fly more often? And do you you generally do PvP or PvE ?

Thanks again for the feedback, guys. STO's community has been an interesting change of pace compared to other MMOs.

I havnt done PVE in over a year except for STF's.I switch back & forth from BoP to Raptor as i get Bored. If you're looking for a pure DPS build, I'd go Raptor.
