What are some ways to increase framerate without detracting from the prettifulness of STO?

Getting a new and better GFX card... That's the obvious answer I know...

But other than that, adding DX11 often enhances framerates... Turn off some of the things you usually dont see.. Reduce Bloom...

depends what you mean by "pretty"

unless you have a good video will always have to balance between framerate and graphical goodness

for you care about shadows..if not tunr them off for a framerate boost.
as mentioned before..does your gfx card do dx11...if so switch to that for a few extra frames(as it optimises it)

In the end if you want the game at max settings ..your gonna need an upgrade it seems

You can always try dropping your screen resolution... (For STF battles, sometimes I have to drop to 1280 x 700 to keep my frame-rates reasonable...)

have a look at this,2553-6.html

its a little old from shortly after release..(so wont include the dx11 optimisations) but it does show that if you are playing at high res with max settings you need a good card.

my 2.6 quad core , 4gb ddr2, 8800gt nvidia handles it well at nearly max settings at 1440x900(or whatever 19" widescreen is.

my laptop however with dual 2.6, 4gb ddr2, ati hd 5650 needs to be on medium or lower(usually a little lower than medium if im in space or in a gfx intense scene such as stf, pvp large maps)

The resolution and frequency are a big deal.

If you're doing more than your monitor can support ot more than your eye can easily detect a difference between, it's probably too much unless you're doing what that one guy does who takes super-high res screenshots to apply anti-aliasing and reduce them down.
