odyssey tactical cruiser use heavy cannons?

I am thinking about getting the odyssey bundle but I need to know if the tactical one can use heavy cannons? Please let me know thanks.

Nup. It can use single cannons, but not DCs or DHCs.

You wouldn't even want to. Equipping dual cannons on a ship that sluggish is just shooting yourself in the foot. Even if you do it on the Galaxy-X it requires a lot of effort, and frankly does not perform better in the end (but it is cool!).

I wonder if not all ship types should get a "special" ability.
Science Vessels: Sensor Analysis + Beam Target Subsystem
Escorts: Dual Cannons + special Escort Defense bonus (I don't think many remember that this exists, but it was introduced a while back).
Cruisers: are missing something here.

I am not saying that it's unbalanced the way it is, but from a broad design perspective, having each ship class have a special ability that makes it unique may have been a better idea. This would have particularly worked well for the Odysey and Bortas. Then the Odyssey Tactical and Science variants could have lost their "Cruiser Special" and replaced with the Escort or Science special. The trend could probably have started earlier, with the first Tier 5 ship maybe having _two_ class special abilities instead of merely one, and those ship that stayed within their class totally getting their special abiltiies.

E.g. We would have had
Assault Cruiser: Cruiser + Escort Special Ability
Star Cruiser: Cruiser + Science Special Ability
Galaxy-Retrofit: Cruiser + Saucer Seperation Special Ability

Ah, well, too late now...

Cruisers are the only ships that get EIGHT WEAPONS at the top tier.

The Odyssey "Tactical" cruiser is able to use 8 weapons and still keeps the +10 wep energy bonus. With all the extra tactical BOff's, it would be one tough beam boat.

I was thinking on using that as an assault ship, really. Think of all the attack patterns, scatter volleys and torpedo spams I can put onto that Lt. Cdr Universal slot.

But would it explode easily with only one Commander engineering boff?

That hasn't stopped people from doing so with the Galaxy X.

People love to pew pew pew, and don't care that their desires lead to bad builds. They're just not patient enough to broadside with beam arrays.
